  1. Thank you for saying this!! My dh was pulled over last year for DWB (driving while black). He was in a certain part of town and a cop pulled him over for NO APPARENT REASON. My dh did nothing to warrant the stop. He is a quiet, soft-spoken man. My dh is a law-abiding citizen, an elder in the church and a wonderful man with a pleasant demeanor. He was HUMILIATED!! For those on this board who don't have a clue about what is like being a minority in this country-please try to be somewhat sensitive to the situation. In the black community, we have to teach our children to be very careful when dealing with law enforcement. I've known of several different cases where people have been beaten up or harassed by cops b/c of the color of their skin. My sons are only 8 and 5 yo. But, there will come a time in the very near future that we will have to talk to them about "racial profiling". To the op I agree that President Obama shouldn't have said anything or used the words "acted stupidly". However, he somewhat apologized for that today. I do agree that both parties overreacted, but it still bothers me that Professor Gates was still arrested after showing his Harvard ID and drivers license that he was the homeowner. I don't care how belligerent he may have been! The cop should've dropped it and the police should've left. End of story.

  4. KingM, Jazzy and Mrs.Mungo, :iagree::iagree::iagree: You all have summed up pretty much what I was trying to say. Thanks
  5. Holly, The newer 3rd editions are wonderful. So far only K, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd are available in the 3rd editions. I heard some people say that 4th grade will be available some time this summer. I'm not sure about that, though. I've purchased from Rainbow Resource and Mardels for BJU math.
  6. OK, I just have to ask since this is something you keep harping on- What black organizations are you referring to that you feel you or other whites have been discriminated against? Really, I think you're being very facetious. I understand if you're trying to say "we need to get both sides of the story before we villify the owners or management of the private club. However, to use reverse racism to justify this atrocity is a slap in the face to many black organizations that originated because they were discriminated against by whites in their respective careers/fields. I mean would there have been a need for a Miss Black America pageant if young black women were allowed to participate in the Miss America pageant from the beginning?? A previous quote from Blessedfamily:
  7. Jennifer, thank you so much for sharing your testimony. I believe that someone really needed to read that. Praise God for you. Isn't wonderful that God through the Holy Spirit gave you what you needed to handle that situation. What a wonderful testimony to new Christians out there who need to know that once they open there hearts to Jesus Christ and accept Him as their personal Lord and Saviour they are IMMEDIATELY one of HIS children and the Lord will take care of them!! I just want to add that "spiritual warfare" is very real. I had an occurrence once when I was pregnant with my first child. I was in my bedroom and all of a sudden I felt an evil presence on the side of my bed. I couldn't see anything, however, I knew something was in my room. I was terrified. I could hardly speak. The only thing that would come out of my mouth was JESUS!. I pleaded the blood of Jesus over myself and baby and the evil presence left the room. I think it is important as Christians to understand that Satan is real. No, we should not idolize or provoke him, however we need to be very aware of him. Remember, his desire is to "kill, steal, and destroy". We should be vigilant in praying over ourselves and loved ones as well as pleading the blood of Jesus over them/ourselves. I do this when I get into any vehicle, anytime I have a disturbing thought that doesn't line up with the Word of God and throughout my home. Remember, Satan was kicked out of heaven b/c he wanted to be like God (or better than God). And when he was kicked out, he took a third of the heavenly host with him. So "Lucifer" and his cohorts will do anything to tempt Christians to denounce God and worship him instead or to "kill, steal, or destroy" them. and I must say TxMomof4- :iagree: with everything you said. Blessings to all :).
  8. My dh taped it for me b/c I had to work. I enjoyed the memorial service. I definitely don't understand what was so "creepy" about it. It was a beautiful service with family, friends, and fans paying their respect to a loved one. Thanks for saying something positive. :)
  9. Hi, From what you're wanting, I would go with EM Daily Language Review. I've used both. I purchased Daily Grams at the beginning of last school year to supplement my ds 2nd grade education. Then I found out that his teacher was using EM DLR in the classroom. I prefer DLR over Daily Grams. I like that DLR incorporates a variety of concepts- verb usage, word usage, spelling, contractions, punctuation, capitalization, parts of speech, etc...there's something different every day. The daily lesson only takes 5-10 min. per day. Also, it would complement any grammar program out there. You can check out Evan-Moor's website and see sample pages as well. As for as Daily Grams goes, I like it. However, it is very repetitive. The same types of questions are asked on a daily basis in the same order every day. I guess there is nothing wrong with that, I just prefer EM Daily Language Review. (but I do like the sentence combining section of Daily Grams.) Anyway, we are working through Daily Grams 2 this summer to keep things fresh. We'll start back with DLR 3 in the fall. HTH, :D
  10. We do math 6 - 7 days per week. It's right along there with daily reading requirement. Currently we are alternating between BJU Math, CLE Math, and Destination Math (online math program, my boys love this :D)
  11. We are in a similar situation. I purchased CLE b/c I thought ds needed a break from BJU Math 2. He is doing well with CLE. We are in level 2. However, it takes us twice as long. He seems to dawdle more with this program than with BJU. We will finish up with the LU's that we have and I'm getting ready to purchase BJU math 3 for the fall. I got to see it at a homeschool convention, and it looks great. I will still try to incorporate CLE math into our studies- on weekends and during summers. I really like the spiral review. But, I think my ds misses the "color" of BJU math. He seems to be very bored with CLE. :glare:
  12. I don't have any experience with the 2nd edition. I've only used the newer 3rd edition books for K, 1st, and 2nd. The math drill fact practice is incorporated into the lesson, usually on the backside of the worksheet. Also, with the newer editions, there is a CD rom included in the TM that you can print off math fact drill sheets (lots of them). And if you purchase the Reviews workbook for the 3rd edition, that go along with the student worktext, there is plenty of math fact practice in those lessons as well. HTH :)
  13. :iagree: We have 3 children. My oldest has been in private school since he was 3 yrs.old (Montessori). Then we attempted to homeschool in first grade. That lasted for 4 months. We put him in a small, Christian school and he did very well. However, I didn't like Shurley English and Saxon math they were using. Anyway, we put him in public school this year and I must say in hindsight, he has flourished. I afterschooled using BJU Math, CLE Math, EM Daily Language Review, and Adventures in Phonics. His last day of school was yesterday. He made the A/B honor roll. Socially, he has made a lot of new friends and he wants to go back. I've struggled somewhat with this b/c part of me wanted to try homeschooling full time next year. However, after thinking it through, I think having him in school full time is better. The public school does offer more than what I could (art, music, PE, a science lab, and friends). Also, they do a lot more writing too. As for as our other children are concerned, our 3yo dd will be at home of course (maybe she'll attend a MDO program 2 days/week. Our soon to be Kinder. son may attend public school with our older son. We won't make that decision until the end of July. To the op, I don't think your going to find a definitive answer to your question. For some families, homeschooling is their way of life. For others, including myself, afterschooling is best for us. If I were you, I would take a good look at the school you're considering; become familiar with the curriculum they are using, stay involved in the classroom and communicate on a regular basis with the teacher. Afterschooling is a win-win situation for me. I work full time outside of the home and even though there are plenty of other families that still homeschool and work full time, I just don't think I'm up for that battle. This way I get to work with my dc one on one w/out feeling "pressured" to teach them everything. On the other hand, if you are fortunate enough to homeschool your dc. I say go for it. I have a friend starting Classical Conversations in the fall, and they are very excited. It looks like a great program. :D HTH, Trina
  14. Hi Nan! I agree with the pp on her recommendations. I would also add requesting a catalog from Sonlight (www.sonlight.com) and from Heart of Dakota (www.heartofdakota.com) as well. I have an 8yo ds going to 3rd grade. Here is my list of read alouds for this summer as well as the next school year: Charlotte's Web The Trumpet of the Swan The Hundred Dresses A Lion to Guard Us Pagoo King of the Wind Benjamin West and His Cat Grimalkin The Railway Children If You Traveled West in a Covered Wagon Family Under the Bridge In Grandma's Attic The House at Pooh Corner Helen Keller The Apple and the Arrow Aesop's Fables The Cricket in Times Square The Key to the Treasure Mr.Popper's Penguins Henry Huggins Homer Price Mrs.Piggle-Wiggle The Year of Miss Agnes Hth, Trina :001_smile:
  15. Quill, I just wanted to add that you don't have to do LOF at the same time as MUS. Your dd can do LOF over the summer and/or weekends. I've read a lot of positive reviews about LOF. It seems to be a fun math program that could be done independently by your dd at her leisure. That way, you can focus on MUS during the school year without feeling like you are slowing her down. Whichever way, I'm sure your dd will be well prepared for her highschool math journey. ;) Trina
  16. We are currently working through 3 different math curriculums, although not at the same time. We just started using CLE math as our "main" program. We were using BJU Math 2, but I decided he would do better with a spiral math program. The jury is still out on whether or not my ds likes CLE math. He sometimes complains that the lesson is a lot longer than BJU. With CLE, the pages can be as long as three pgs. front/back. This is only b/c most of the instruction is in the workbook directed to the student. Sometimes we will finish up a CLE math lesson and do one lesson in BJU. Other times we do a lesson in BJU and follow up with 2 pgs. in Singapore Math. Singapore Math though is usually reserved for weekends and the summer. My ds gets bored doing the same thing over and over. I like to teach him different ways of doing problems so I can determine whether or not he has grasped a concept. I plan to stick with these 3 programs until he gets to sixth grade. After that, we're moving onto Chalkdust Math for the long haul. ;)
  17. I talked to a BJU rep at our homeschool convention earlier this month. She said they are revising the math one year at a time. The 4th grade should be ready for Spring of next year. However, they may release the student worktext earlier like they did with Math 3. The worktext was out a long time before the TE. The TE for Math 3 has only been out for several months, so it may be awhile before Math 4 is available in the new edition.
  18. Exact situation here. My ds turned six a few weeks after starting Kinder in private school. He is finishing up 2nd grade in public school. He will turn nine in September and will be in the 3rd grade. He has always been one of the oldest in his classes.
  19. With my oldest I used ETC and Bob Books and CLP K readers. We stopped ETC in book 3 and moved to Adventures in Phonics workbook. Now with my middle ds who just turned 5, I will be using OPGTR with MCP Phonics wkbks. and CLP K readers.
  20. We use the Daily Language Review. It only takes 5 mins. per day. We are finishing up 2nd grade and will use next year for 3rd grade. :001_smile:
  21. We will be using MFW K in the fall. I'm using OPGTR, MCP Plaid Phonics, and CLP readers for phonics. Everything else will be MFW. :001_smile:
