  1. I would put him in Pre-Algebra in one of these programs: Derek Owens Pre-Algebra Tabletclass Pre-Algebra Lials's Pre-Algebra He can move at his own pace and possibly finish pre-algebra and Algebra in the next 12 months.
  2. What about Holt Biology course through the Well Trained Mind Academy?
  3. Here is the plan for ds, 9th grade: edited 8/29/15 Pre-Algebra/ Algebra 1 ???? Apologia Biology @ hybrid school Spanish 1 @ hybrid school PE @ hybrid school World Geography - ??? Not sure, maybe Oak Meadow or through TTUISD English 1- Analytical Grammar, Essentials in Writing, Essentials in Literature?? (Maybe). We stopped LIghtning Lit. because it was too dry. Electives ??? He still needs a fine arts elective. I'm researching options.
  4. My oldest ds, my first 9th grader, is behind in his writing skills and doesn't like to read. He skips over all writing assignments and we have to make him read. This past year we enrolled him in a beginning IEW course at a local co-op that we later dropped because he hated the class. He says IEW is too formulaic. He has ADD with EF disorder. We hired a tutor back in April and designed a curriculum for him to get him caught up. He currently is working on: Lightning literature 8, Analytical Grammar, and he will be starting WWS1 next month. After WWS, my plan is for him to take a few BraveWriter courses next spring/summer 2016. DS should be finished with LL8 at the end of this year. We will start the Teaching the Classics/ Window to the World combo next January/ February and work throughout the summer.
  5. My rising 6th grader will be taking the following courses at a UMS in the fall: IEW Narnia Analytical Grammar Literature 6 (various novels)
  6. I just ordered Calvert for my third and sixth grader. We should receive our boxes this week. I got so tired of piecing stuff together. My children will be going back to school Fall 2014, if not sooner.
  7. I'm surprised no one has mentioned CLE Math. My older kids are using it and I'm very pleased with this program. I'm also trying out the 1st grade level with my 5yo dd since she's flying through Singapore Essential math and will be finished with that in 2-3 weeks. So far she enjoys it and is doing two lessons per day. Each grade level has 10 lightunits and two teacher's manuals. CLE math is a spiral math program (meaning it covers different topics in one lesson.) There are also speed drills in the back to reinforce math facts. The tm explains each lesson thoroughly and the curriculum is very thorough. CLE math is also very inexpensive. You can check out plenty of samples on their website www.clp.org. Congratulations on making the decision to homeschool. I totally understand about working full time and homeschooling. The past two years we used BJU math and I really like the program for K-3, but I felt we needed a change. CLE teaches to the student and the instruction is very straightforward. I also like MM, but we use the blue series for certain topics only. HTH, :)
  8. Last school year we didn't do any activities outside of the home, except for going to the library and parks. ( I worked a crazy full time retail schedule and was often too tired to do or go anywhere on my "off" days. This school year we are busy with a newborn in the house, but I had to incorporate outside activities into our schedule because the kids were starting to say "homeschool" was boring and older ds begin begging to go back to public school (and we almost gave in :001_huh:). homeschool PE -twice weekly robotics-once per week art class-once per week bible study @ church-every Wednesday night Mathnasium-4-5 times per week They're much happier now. We are out of the house a lot, but we school year round and I'm taking it easy this year with a newborn in tow.
  9. I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for, but I've used this in the past. http://corefoundations.wordpress.com/scheds-english-and-history/
  10. In the past with my older children, we used Kumon wkbks for telling times. I think there are two workbooks; the first one for telling time by the hour and the half-hour. The second book deals with telling time in intervals: 15 min, 5 min, etc.. Now, with my dd, I've purchased the Math Mammoth blue topic on "clock". I think a spent $3 for it. HTH,:)
  11. My 5yo dd really likes Reading Eggs. I bought a subscription through homeschool buyers coop for $16. It is worth the price. I agree with the previous posters about it moving fast. The children are encouraged to repeat the lessons to gain automatic recall. I happen to like the fact that it does involve sight words because dd has to learn them in school anyway. I also like that it gets the children reading sentences early on in the program. I let my dd "play" for 45 minutes 3 times per week. This is part of her afterschooling curriculum. We also use HOP and ETC workbooks. I don't know about ETC online, but I do like their workbooks. I looked into Click n Read, but I'm not willing to shell out $60 for it.
  12. There are quite a few. I've used www.starfall.com with all of my children. This site is free and it is awesome as a supplement to any phonics program. I'm using Reading Eggs with dd now. I really like this program. I purchased a one year subscription through the homeschool buyer's coop for about $16. HTH :)
  13. My 5th grader is studying American History this year with Abeka History 4. I will be doing a parallel study with him using H.A. Guerber's : The Story of the Thirteen Colonies and The Story of the Great Republic. I just ordered them, so I can't give you a review as of yet. I will be mainly using these books as read alouds. We will also be using Maptreks: US edition and the reading list from Sonlight's American History cores.
  14. OK, dh and I changed our mind. We will continue homeschooling for this school year. I'm relieved. I think I was ready to send them off to school b/c of the newborn. Things have settled down and we're ready to kick off the new year on Sept. 1st-the day my daughter starts school. I wish you all well this school year with afterschooling.
  15. We are back to afterschooling for the upcoming school year. Our children are 10,7, and 5 yo. Our curriculum is in my siggy. We've gone back and forth between homeschooling and afterschooling since our oldest was in PreK. He doesn't like homeschooling, I work full-time (currently out on maternity leave), and we just have too much going on as a family. Dh and I have agreed to put the kids back in school. The older two kids are going back to public school and my dd is in a kinder program at a small Christian school. I'm looking forward to this school year.
