  1. No one can tell me, your child needs to know X, Y & Z before starting RS C? Maybe you could tell me what skills your DC had when finishing RS B then?
  2. I am moving Bugsy into Rightstart C next year. I took the mini quiz on their site and that is what's recommended. He's currently hit a wall in Miquon so we have side stepped and are working on some different skills. What skills does he NEED to have before beginning Rightstart C? I have activities for the AL Abacus & Worksheets for the AL Abacus here so if there is anything particular we could work on it the RS way for the rest of the year before beginning RS C in January. Thanks :)
  3. My youngest was born at 25w and had a long stay in NICU, almost 4m. Most babies that came through NICU and SCN that were born around 35w when Mum had notice and had received steroid shots did not require any assistance with breathing. It was only feeding and putting on weight they were monitoring. Some who were spontaneously born at 35w did require a little bit of assistance, mostly CPAP for a day or 2 while baby 'woke up' a bit. If your bub is IUGR as you say you can probably expect to spend a while in NICU or SCN. Most of the IUGR babies we came across were slow to gain and stayed right up to or past their due dates. Mostly because they didn't have the stamina to master suck feeds. It will be a hard time for your family. Make sure you have someone available for transport if you have a c-section. Make sure your kids know they might not be able to meet the little one for a while. Our hospi had no visitation to the nurseries, but all hospi's are different. Certainly cook meals and freeze in prep. Hugs, it's a tough time.
  4. Hugs. Get some rest. I hope he is feeling better soon.
  5. Is there a list somewhere of all of the FIAR books by country?
  6. Well, i hadn't considered that but i'm not sure my oldest would be able to stay out of it and stick to SOTW4 if there was something 'more exciting' going on. I was kind of thinking more along the lines of cultural or geography rather than history, but i'm not sure what's available that's secular and is 'open and go'.
  7. I'm looking for something 'open and go' preferably secular as a stop gap year for 2 children in grades K & 2. I've just had a quick look at SL Core A, what else should i consider? They will move onto ancients in 2014. My oldest (4th grader) will be doing SOTW4 next year but i think it will be way too much for K & 2nd so i'd like to combine them with something that isn't 'world history'. I will also have a very busy 2yo. :bigear:
  8. Hi :) I think you want SWI-A, older will get plenty out of it and it would be easy to lighten it up for the younger. The other option would be to use WWE 2 as a gentle year for the younger before starting IEW with them. I've got both. Lets catch up and have a chat about it, and you can have a look see if you like :)
  9. Thinking of you. Possum measured 11 days behind my dates at my 3 early scans. My OB chose not to move my date and just said he wouldn't be surprised if i went over. My first scan was just a sac i was sure i was 7 weeks by dates, but bub didn't measure that way. Fingers crossed for a positive scan this week.
  10. Gotcha :) Thanks, i really hope that we can find someone quickly. We are going on wait lists all over the place.
  11. Thankyou so much! We have already started ramping up the signing. I will implement having him make sounds to get things. I'm not sure how that will go as he doesn't currently repeat anything i say, but we will start doing it. Thankyou for the tips on the supplements i will look into the ones you mentioned. Possum is a sensory seeker too!
  12. Thankyou so much everyone. I will check out all of those links today. OhElizabeth I'll try and answer as best i can. Initially i thought he was deaf. He seemed to not hear things. We had him evaluated and he had grommets put in at 9mo. He had fluid related hearing loss and his hearing was perfect after having the grommets put in. When he had his 12m corrected evaluation his expressive and receptive language were that of a 10m old. He was actually 15.5m at the time so there was a delay of about 6m. At the time he could not identify common objects, ball, car, doll etc and he wasn't doing much other than babble and some occasional mum-mum-mum, da-da-da, ba-ba-ba. At the time we were referred for speech and we started seeing the local speechie who i think is useless. Initially she said, he's not that far behind and given he couldn't hear you for months and was so premature, it's to be expected. Just keep reading etc. So we did all that and then she suggested that maybe he was still having hearing problems, so we had him checked again and the audiologist who i love said he is perfect. Back to the speechie and she still says he will get there in his own time. I expressed my concerns with his ENT who said medically there is no reason why he shouldn't be talking. I requested a referral to speech pathology at the children's hospital but he has referred us to a developmental paed at the children's hospital instead. I have been told before that they don't believe there is any cognitive impairment. He certainly seems to be just as bright as my other kids. Right now he understands most of what you say, can recognise common objects etc. His receptive language has caught up in leaps and bounds! As for expressive, he doesn't have any words, he makes lots of noise, mostly vowel sounds or nasal kind of sounds with a closed mouth. He does say /f/ when pouring a kettle or making other water type sounds. He hardly ever does mum-mum-mum, da-da-da or ba-ba-ba now. He does want to tell you things. He will take me by the hand and show me what he wants. He will sign food or bath. He does become frustrated when you don't get what his problem is because he can't just tell you. I managed to get a call back from a private speechie late yesterday. She is an ex-uni lecturer and came recommended by Deaf Society (i've been calling everyone!) She said she might be able to fit him in for an evaluation in the next month, but doesn't have openings for therapy sessions ATM. I'm assuming she will look at apraxia as a possibility. I just can't wait for him to say Mum!
  13. Possum who is 2 in 2 weeks is speech delayed. We have been seeing a useless speechie provided by the state for a year. Her advice is read books and he will get there, umm, it's not happening. I've been phoning around many of the private speechie's both locally and in the city for the past month and there is a long wait to see anyone, 3-6m. In the meantime we need to start doing more. Are there any books you can recommend that i read that might give me some techniques or methods or advice on what i can do for him? Are there any ipad apps that you can recommend that we can use together with him? We have a language rich home, i play 1 on 1 with him, we read books, i've been teaching him some signs as the frustration level continues to rise. He does not have a formal diagnosis of anything. The suggestion is his delay stems from his prematurity, born at 25w. Many thanks for any help, advice or suggestions you can offer.
  14. I knew i would cry. I've watched it now and i wanted to say thankyou for sharing with us. Your family is beautiful! Hugs, i can imagine how the emotion is boiling away. As it approaches Possum's 2nd Birthday i have everything racing around in my brain again.
  15. Getting the box of tissues before I watch. I'm sure I will cry a bucket. Well done for having the strength to do this.
  16. So excited for you. Everything crossed that the ultrasound is perfect and it is a long and uneventful pregnancy and birth.
  17. a) Everyone serves themselves and then begins, we don't wait. b) Fine to take seconds but only if you have finished your entire first meal. Not OK to take more food if you still have food on your plate. c) If there is only a small amount of a dish left, just politely ask if there are any other takers for the balance. If there is lots of all the dishes just take a serving of what interests you but don't load the plate with the one dish you love. I don't know if this is customary, but it is certainly what is practiced in my extended family and friendship circle in Australia :)
  18. When i was cutting down on pumping after bringing Possum home from NICU, as he was nursing so i didn't need to pump, i just reduced the time a little at a time. I had been double pumping every 3 hours round the clock for months. If you are double pumping for 15 mins each time try pumping one side for 12 and the other for 10. Then at the next pumping session switch sides So the longer time is the one you last pumped. So more like mimicking nursing 1 baby, not 'feeding' twins. Then gradually cut the time down over a few days then cut a pumping session until you are at the required amount you want. I'm still nursing Possum just morning and night :)
