  1. We love to eat at the Apple Barn & Cider Mill: a restaurant, ice cream parlor, and general store. It is in Pigeon Forge. ETA: Oops, same restaurant as above post.
  2. I :crying: cry at every touching, sweet moment in our read alouds... usually followed by a unanimous "Oh, Mommmm!" (with an impatient tone to voice), 2 simultaneous eye rolls:001_rolleyes: , and me trying to excuse myself with... "but he loves his mother..." ;)
  3. I am considering the repeat only because of the possibility that having a familiar subject during the change from homeschool to HS would make the change easier. It would be a class he could do well in.
  4. I was hoping to prepare him for the mostly textbook routine. Currently we use a spine and numerous other books/projects for Science. I thought that an actual Science text, instead of a unit study approach, could fill in any needed info.
  5. I need to decide on a science text for next year, thus a poll to make this easier for me :001_smile:. Ds will be in 8th grade next year. He will most probably attend HS for grades 9-12 which starts with a Physical Science class in 9th grade. He has done elementary level physics, chemistry, human body (this year). for 8th grade, I want to work thru either of the following Apologia texts: 1. Exploring Creation with General Science or 2. Exploring Creation with Physical Science which would you recommend?
  6. Yes, it looks like I may need to write our own schedule for next year... or add MOH into a pre-scheduled program like Sonlight. I always add in some of their books to our schoolyear anyway.
  7. Funny that you should ask... I have just spent the last 30min perusing that MOH 3 yahoo group :001_smile:. There is a link that looks helpful. Thank you!
  8. Thank you, I just discovered Biblioplan. HOD uses it in Middle Ages, which we are currently completing after using MOH 2 for this time period in our WP program.
  9. Is there a curriculum which uses MOH 3 (The Renaissance, Reformation, and Growth of Nations, covering people and events from 1455 to 1707) as a spine with TM + schedule? I like this series and have used it with WP, but it is not used in WP R&R. I am trying to avoid writing our own schedule for next year. TIA
  10. I discovered the Worldview Academy camp from this forum. They have a curriculum and a recommended reading list on this website. I think I will investigate that reading list this summer and then pre-read dc's texts for next year's narrations.
  11. A typing Instruction program for kids on CD-ROM works for us. Bought one for $10 at Staples.
  12. Were you on your own or did others witness this conversation? If so... glad I'm not the only who talks to herself.
  13. We are a WP family. We've completed AS1, AS2, Children around World, QAW, currently on QMA, looking at Am Crossing + Q for Royals/Rev next year. I like the books, having the option of hands-on activities, but never have time for the websites. I like the balance of reading, narration, and activities offered by WP. Like a previous poster stated, I still take away or add as needed. The price is our only deterrent and as I look at Q for RR, there are more exclusive WP items, which are pricey and not easily available on the used market. The no resale policy doesn't faze me, because when I purchase a written item, I consider it mine. Not sure why I distinguish a difference... but there it is. HTH,
  14. I have changed from semi-processed to Made-from-Scratch over the past 6 mos. My first rude awakening was the time it took, which eroded any "downtime" between homeschool and supper. Save time by menu-planning, then turn your favorite tunes on, allow adequate time for meal-prep, and cut and chop away... I have few complaints, because the smells fill the kitchen, my attitude toward cooking has changed, and it really tastes better, especially as my cooking improves with practice. HTH,
  15. Too close for my taste. How about Carl? Reminds me of my niece and nephew who are Christopher (Chris) and Crystal. Love my sister, but never liked that decision.
  16. I core and cook with a little water to prevent sticking, then run through a food mill of the "arm-strong" method, which my ds enjoys cranking. This mashes the pulp and separates the peeling. Then I add cinnamon, sugar, pour into canning jars and process in a water bath for 25 minutes. "Arm-strong" aka hand-operated food mill:
  17. Thank you for all the helpful replies. I am leaning toward a 5-6hr day and will evaluate where I can increase the writing projects as written narration/research studies throughout the week. I am considering adding a Logic study as well, something that may be more of interest to him to balance out the increase in writing.
  18. Thank you. Our WP History curriculum includes weekly projects, ie: research, and/or hands-on activities, which we include in our week, often on Friday pm. Are you saying that a written researched report should be a part of each day?
  19. Thank you for your reply. I must have been thinking the same, because we already added 15 min to the reading time. We do the SCM memorizing system for Bible verses and history cards, so I could add in art history.
  20. Thank you for sharing your day. We have a workbox system, actually, they just move tags when subjects are completed, I don't physically put papers in anymore. They can accomplish school in any order, except we interrupt things so history or science can be done together. We also have Discovery Streaming for educational videos thrown in to the mix. Glad to see others have a relaxed schedule. Sounds like we are somewhat similar and 4.5 hrs is your average as well.
  21. Thank you. I have recently asked him to do a written narration on history or science, everyday. Of course, he protests at first and then diligently puts pen to paper. By the time he is done, he has invested thought and energy into it. He is then proud to put it in his notebook.
  22. Thank you for sharing your perspective. We do an oral discussion/ sometimes narration after the history text reading. I recently started asking for a written narration everyday, either history or science.
  23. To summarize... he starts at 0730 at his own discretion until 0900, when I start supervising + checking work. I toggle b/t the 2 boys, he does work while younger needs me and vice versa. When each completes the basic studies or close to a stopping point, we move into History and/or Science together, depending on day of week. This takes us close to 1200, with one 15-20 min break. Younger ds then continues after lunch until school completed, protesting all the way.... We use a workbox system to organize assignments. So a total of about 4 hrs, which seems MUCH too little for me...
  24. He starts at 0730. He does all the subjects he can do independently, ie: math, IEW writing, history writing/ notebooking, critical thinking, history reading assignments, science reading assignments, WW, Bible, Spanish in about 3 hours, then we do the subjects that involve the teacher and read/do some history and science all together. This gets done before lunch. In the pm, he does his reading, piano, household chores, plans and teaches Ranger Kids every week, and plays football whenever he can. I think, at the least, we will add another history text and keyboarding, maybe art. Where does one find out what is rigorous for 7th grade?
