  1. I need a non stick pan, but I know there are bad things about the non stick coating. Does anyone know anything about the so-called "green" ones that supposedly don't have bad things in them? What about the ones that say they are ceramic on the inside? Any brands anyone recommends? If not non-stick, can anyone recommend a store/brand for PRE SEASONED cast iron pans? I have tried before and somehow failed to season correctly and everything stuck hideously. I'm willing to pay a bit if I knew it was going to be good and last a good while. Thanks!!!!
  2. So I have two children who went off to college this semester as freshman, not twins (long story) and my youngest is in public middle school. now that I'm not homeschooling any more, I need a job, or plans for one. I don't want to do what my undergrad degree is in, so I need some ideas. I would really like to lay and read, and garden and sew, but I would become bored and cranky and we really could use some more income, now that the cash is flowing out to colleges :). I loved home schooling. Any ideas, prayers, etc, gratefully received!
  3. I am thinking about getting texts in ebook format but would like to hear some of the good and bad that others have found. It would be for subjects like Physics and Algebra II. I'm happy to hear both sides, so don't hold back! I know some of it is personal preference. What have your students found when looking back in the book to find a piece of info. they have previously seen? Is there any way of searching that is not going back page by page? Thanks
  4. David's Bridal gets my vote too. We looked EVERYWHERE for modest dressy dress for dd, size 2, and David's was my long shot last stop. I should have started there. There was a huge selection of clearance dresses under $80 ( I know not cheap, but actually a good price for such a dress I have realized after painful search) and many were modest and classy looking. We found just what we were looking for. Good luck, I know your pain!
  5. Please help me! I have ds who is over 6 feet tall, and is skinny. He needs a suit for graduation and things at college. Does anyone know where to find slim-fit suits at a good price? Thank you
  6. If you are not opposed, you can go to the local high school and get their handbook. They usually have a nice table that gives college prep requirements and graduation requirements(less rigorous). Then you'll have an idea of what most CA high schools are doing. Chatting with people in other states, the college prep requirements seem fairly similar in many states. You can look at UC/CSU requirements online. When mine were entering high school I looked at requirements at various colleges that I thought they might be interested in, adn what was do-able based on our income and the child's abilities. That gave me a good representation of what colleges were looking for. The more I've looked, the more similar college requirements start to sound.
  7. I'm 6'0" tall woman, 130 lbs, and never drank milk. Milk drinking is a U.S. thing. Europeans don't drink milk with meals, nor do many other people groups. Don't worry about the milk propaganda.
  8. we did a murder mystery dinner. Bought the kit online, rated appropriate for teens. It had all the invitations, the bio for each character, the events that needed to take place to keep the story moving, everything. I'm an idiot when it comes to things like that, and even I could manage it. They came in period costumes, we served sit down dinner for 18, co-ed. Put up white christmas lights inside, wrote out the menu, put groupings of chairs through the living room and family room. It was the talk of the teens for quite a while after. Great fun and felt really special. Good luck
  9. The full ride isn't conditional, so that's OK. It's not really slacking, just sluggishness
  10. Ok, I need some support! I have 2 high school seniors. They are both dragging their feet big time. I always used to laugh at the term senioritis and think that the phenomenon must not really be, but now I have seen it with my own eyes! One is in ps and one is at home, through charter. One has full ride offer already and keeps reminding me of it! Does anyone have any tips on ways to encourage the kids, and to keep myself sane? I didn't know if a big countdown, with some events along the way (movie at theater, ice cream, etc) might help, or a good talking to, or what? Thanks for your help.
  11. We live in a place that's AZ type of hot. We do not heat the pool ever. Our PG&E bill this month (elec only) was $75 for all household use. It goes up to maybe $125 in summer, but that's A/C. The pump runs every day summer and winter to keep it clean. Dh spends maybe 15 mins a week on it in winter and maybe 25 a week in summer. He enjoys it. When we moved here we had a youngest similar age to yours and good swimmer, I have never been fearful. I do go out and watch, though not as much now that oldest is young adult and others are teens. I always watch when others kids are over. We have a fence and gate. It has been wonderful to have a pool, we didn't have one before in an equally hot place.
  12. Lands end. I'm under 40, 6ft tall, multiple babies, not overweight. The suits last well too, the last one I bought I rinsed out after daily use and it has lasted 2 years and will probably go 3. Other suits don't last past 1 year with daily use. And the suits stay long, they don't creep shorter with use, as some other suits have. Good luck!
  13. Still, when it's all said and done, $10,000 for a 4 year degree wouldn't be bad, and I'm guessing that unless there's big scholarship money involved, then that is going to be the similar where ever they go. There isn't much 'free' college out there.
  14. We used Barrons 2400, I think it was called. Ds always did well on regular prep books, and they didn't tell him anything he didn't know. This one had all medium or hard level questions, it's that hard level that you have to be consistent on. It also has a lot of test taking strategies, which are very important. I have a friend that works for a test prep company and she said the same thing as me, most books help you get a "good" score. Ds score wasn't far off that 2400, first time taking. Good luck.
  15. I have found that prep books are aimed at the average student, to help them get a good score. If they want to seriously raise their score from good to amazing, then the typical prep books won't help them. Look on Amazon and read reviews, there are some books aimed at getting a "top" score.
  16. We are in the middle of it all with 2 graduating high school this year. One is going to state U on a FULL RIDE!!! An academic one. WHOOOO-HOOOO. We are blessed. Other child is looking at private U, who is offering more aid that the full ride at state U comes to, but that is still only a portion of the total price for that school. So though private schools are offering more aid if you look at the numbers only, if you look at it as a percentage of the total cost then you still might do better at state U. Another thing to think about is that at state U., child is surrounded by many who are in the same socioeconomic group as they are, and I know (having gone to private U. myself, as well as speaking to many others) that at private U. kids are surrounded by many who are much wealthier, and it shows in lifestyle-cars they drive, trips they take, etc. So that can be hard if your child can't participate in some things, eg travel abroad, because they don't have similar money. But, the biggest factor should be, what program does child want to do, and where are they best served doing that? Our state U. has great program in what that child wants to do and undergrads get to do projects and interact with professors one on one all the time. I had family member graduate from big name private U in last couple years and that wasn't the case there. My advice is don't listen to the hype, go and do the research for yourself, so you know the real answer based on where you are and what your child wants to do. We also sat our children down and told them that we intended for them to get 4 year degree, and we didn't intend to go into debt for it, nor did we intend for them to go into debt for it. So they needed to work hard and look for something that was affordable. We would like to teach them to live within their means, and what better lesson to start on than choosing a college that can be paid for through scholarships, federal money, working minimally and an attainable price to begin with. My BEST wishes for all you who are looking right now.
  17. We are big 10 days ... players. The discard piles are random. you can put your discard wherever you want to, any of the piles. Once a card is covered up on the discard pile it is no longer available. The transport cards go in any discard pile, mixed with all the other cards. Happy playing!
  18. Rainbow Light ( a very good quality brand) does a good teen multi called Active Health Teen. I order it from Vitacost.com
  19. I almost cried hearing about your troubles and so wanting a release for you. I had a hysterectomy 5 years ago at age 33. It was also best thing I could have done for my overall health. It was a pretty standard recovery after the first few days of feeling pretty rough, and a week of feeling OK in general, but still a bit tender. My kids were 12, 10 and 7. I had it done the day after Christmas so that my husband who is PS teacher would be around to help as much as possible. All the very best to you. I will be watching for updates!
  20. If you use or have used the subscriber portion of the Happy Scientist could you tell me if you liked it and thought it was worth it? Thanks
  21. As a wife of a public school teacher, and we homeschool our children, I agree that some of the problem is poor pay and lack of professional regard. Tenure is definitely a problem, I would have it gone in a second if it were up to me. It doesn't seem to protect the good as much as protect the bad. I would be curious how Finland serves their gifted children. The joke in our house is "No child left behind, but heaven forbid that anyone gets ahead."
  22. It's so good to hear from all of you. I haven't made one SINGLE homeschool friend and we've been here 6 years. Not only no friend, but not even been spoken to by the large "in" homeschooling group. If one schools through a charter then one is evil (we go through charter). I wish that these ladies would understand that they won't be rewarded in heaven for keeping their homeschooling group pure, they will be shown how they hurt and left out mothers who could have really used a friend.
  23. in mine there is a markdown tag on the edge of the shelf. It is on many more items than in the Whole Deal flyer. It is not a coupon you have to give at the register, its just a tag reading a lower price that automatically comes up at register.
  24. We did YEARS of speech therapy with dd for tongue thrust, the whole intense home program, but it works! You have to find a SLP that specializes in that, many do general exercises for it that don't help at all. If there's not a big home component to the program, then it probably won't be effective. It takes a lot of time and serious effort to retrain that problem. She also had a guard fitted to a retainer. It didn't have spikes. It was all worth it. Now dd is almost grown and has no speech problems and orthodontic work has maintained beautifully for years post-braces.
