  1. My high schooler is struggling to take notes, primarily when assigned to take notes from reading in textbooks. Are there any courses or books that teach this skill? She's a good student and motivated, just needs some guidelines. Thanks!
  2. 2 of our 3 dc had braces. One that had them first had them for 2 years (second phase), 4 permanent teeth and 7 baby teeth pulled, not all at once. Severest crowding, small jaw. Only so much space can be gained by the expanders, they work out how much space is needed and then compare that to the maximum they can get through expanders. Braces on from 13 to 15. Teeth look fantastic, she's 20 now. Second dd has had braces on for 3 yrs now (2nd phase) and is not quite done. Severest crowding again, same baby teeth pulled as older sibling. 3 different orthodontists all gave same opinion. This dd also had 3 oral surgeries besides extractions, to remove bone cyst around one tooth, attach a chain and bracket to impacted front tooth coming in 2 teeth over from where it was supposed to be, and another bracket and chain the bring up another un-erupted tooth. We went to an ortho who specialized in the most severe cases. It has been hard and loooong, but several of these teeth would have been lost without intervention. I can see the end in sight. She will be glad for the rest of her life. Not coming from this country, I think orthodontia is overdone here, but in some cases, it's an absolute blessing. My advice would be to get several opinions and compare them. I had braces myself, no extractions, and my teeth are crowded again. I think extractions can be a good thing. I do have my dc sedated for them, awake it can be no fun,
  3. Ds, 18 is doing PT with marines. He needs to gain weight too. Anyone have recommendations for good quality multivitamin and/or something to aid muscle recovery? I know some of you have been down this path with husbands or sons and I would value any wisdom!
  4. Thank you all! That is very helpful. Some of my friends look surprised when they hear where I go for advice :001_smile:
  5. Ds 18 needs a suit, previous ones from Penneys have never looked a great fit. Thing is, I don't know if he's done growing and he's in process of bulking up. He needs it within the week for an important event. I need it to be good quality at good price. Any suggestions?
  6. One Christmas we had all 3 kids and mother-in-law (staying with us) all sick with flu at the same time. They all had positive tests. One so dd so bad she ended up in hospital. I cared for them all and I didn't get sick. It really was a case of the old and the young. I do quarantine as best I can, the sick ones stay in their rooms and use only specified bathroom. Lysol wipes used liberally on all doorknobs, light switches, faucets, high-use areas. Paper towels only, no hand towels anywhere. No sick one allowed in the kitchen or to help themselves to any food. I know it sounds tight, but it has worked for us. I serve the sick ones food in their room, they can watch TV there, I make sure they drink plenty, are well entertained, dosed with whatever they are taking, etc. All the best!
  7. I am a 'natural look' person, and my 2 teen girls are too. But I feel being able to apply makeup, should one choose to wear it, is a skill that I want my girls to have. So I have had friends who have done a Mary Kay party in their own homes, usually with a friend who sells it, and it's a very low key way to show the girls this skill, in a very controlled environment. It's great if the rep is a friend because then you can be very clear about what look you want shown to the girls. I personally have had older teen girls from church, whom I trust, and whose makeup 'look' I like, come over and do my girls makeup for these special events. It makes it feel special, is free, and my girls have learned a skill that way. Good luck!
  8. Dd is super thin and is always cold. Because of location in house her room is colder and there is no alternative room. She wakes at 2 am, cold. I have read the health risks of electric blankets. She would sleep with it on all night if she had one, which I have read is not a good idea. I know lots of people have used them for years without any health consequences, but I would rather skip that potential risk. Anyone have any ideas for keeping her warm during the night? Thanks!
  9. My college kid is learning German over Christmas break. Needs it to test into the next level German class next semester. He ordered Deutsche Heute used, and it won't come till Jan 7, which is too late. Does anyone know where I can rent etextbooks? Does anyone happen to have this text that they want to sell? Thanks for all help!
  10. Can anyone tell me about the different versions of this game? I looked on Amazon and there are different versions, by year. Some of the reviews said the pieces were cheap or there weren't enough of them. Some said some versions were very long to play. Any fans out there? Who can tell me what they know? It was requested for Christmas by ds, 18. Thanks!
  11. My daughter has different sized feet and really struggles to find quality shoes. She usually buys cheap shoes, but lacks good ones for nice occasions. Any ideas/experience with stores or websites that can accommodate this. Does anywhere sell a single shoe in 2 different sizes?
  12. Flip the scenario and think, would you like your young adult son to be teaching a female student without anyone else around? I wouldn't. He doesn't know what accusation might be made, and he has no protection from that. I have both sons and daughters and I don't recommend that either ds or dd (both young adults) be on their own with any one teen in a teacher/student setting. Both of my young adults teach and they both follow that principle. It's best for all, there's no downside, except mom's time and inconvenience (which I know can be considerable). But the years go by, and you won't regret those hours down the road.
  13. There's nothing really wrong with it, or I would return it. I'd love to sell it :)
  14. I have a used Eddie Bauer rain jacket, Goretex, like new, that is just too big, plus I live where we don't get rain. It's a women's L. Where would be a good place to sell it online? Consignment here won't take it cause we don't get rain. I'd like to sell it for $20, so don't want somewhere that will take a big cut. Thanks!
  15. Would anyone tell me what dehydrator you have, and the pros and cons. I have some back yard fruit trees and would like to be able to dry some of the produce. We have 5 in the family, so I don't need supersize capacity. I'd like something reliable, inexpensive but good quality. I have read somewhere that some are pricey to run, or take too long, I don't want either of those. Thanks!
  16. Take boots with her if money is tight-things are expensive there. Ds spent summer Austria this year and he drew money from his US acct with ATM card there. Got a decent amount out infrequently, to minimize fees. We wired money to pay the course fees that otherwise had to be paid from Austrian acct. again, fees involved. But the experience was priceless! Ds travelled alone on train from Austria to England, with no problems. He's 17.
  17. We live in hot central valley of CA. We're going to be young empty nesters in a couple of years, I'll be 43. we'd like to move to somewhere with a nicer climate, not too hot or cold, but some real seasons. Dh is a high school teacher. We've always lived on one income, so it needs to be a mid to low COL place. We eat organic, like simple living, access to good health care and a city within an hour. and recommendations? Thanks!
  18. With the health needs of your daughter you could look into Lucille Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford. I have taken my kids there for years and have had excellent care. SJ is lovely, not too far to coast, easy to eat well. I think there are enough alternative people that you should find a group you fit with. I'm happy for you.
  19. Dd liked to help in the kitchen as a toddler and she wanted to be a carrot peeler when she grew up-not the tool, but a peeler of carrots! So funny. Now she's in high school and doesn't know what she wants to be.
  20. I need some help. Dd 15 has been diagnosed with incomplete periods-bleeding comes in bits and pieces because hormones not at levels consistent enough to sustain any sort of cycle. Has breakouts on face. Body weight is low, hgb is 10. Tried bc pills but terrible and didn't help cycle. Any natural help out there? Herbs, supplements, anything. Can't seem to get hgb up and can't find reason for it's low-ness. has had endless bloodwork done. I don't know where to turn next. This has gone on 2 years. Any advice appreciated!
  21. Funny to hear some of the responses. Ds is 17, and interested in so many things, I was just looking for a general book so that I could be informed and offer an educated opinion when asked for one! So not too odd that I'm asking. I think as homeschoolers many of us are lifelong learners and this is a topic I would like to learn more about. If the book was really great, I might recommend it to the child involved.
  22. Is there a book that outlines grad school info-what they are looking for, how to be a competitive applicant, what they like to see in the way of GPA, extracurriculars, etc. I read a book called something like "What high schools don't tell you" and it was a great outline of how to prep for undergrad applications. Now I want the grad school version! It's for ds, a junior in college this year. Can anyone tell me the time line for grad school apps? Are applications submitted fall of senior year? Thanks!
  23. I think that a child could be encouraged to try something outside of their comfort zone, they may learn that they like that sort of thing, or it may confirm what they already thought. But new experiences can be a good thing and either way, they learn more about themselves. The experience may come in handy later.
  24. i remember those times! JcPenney worked for us-online. Stores don't seem to carry the unusual sizes, but it's super easy online. And once we found what worked, he was fine with the same thing again and again until he grew big enough to fit in traditional sizes and had more choice. Sometimes we got lucky at Marshalls. They seem to have a lot of young mens clothes that run slim. It will pass, and you will be astonished at the man looking back at you one day.
