  1. This doesn't surprise me about a non-religious person. I know of many Christians that wouldn't be able to tell the differences between Catholics and Protestants. I've heard some of one call the other non-Christian and vice versa. Its hard to take them seriously.
  2. My ds9 had a tonsillectomy last year due to recurrent problems. Since then he hasn't been sick, even when the rest of the family comes down with something. Any other families experience similar? I ask because my dd is starting to have similiar tonsillitis.
  3. How is this more worrisome than the non-homeschooled community doing the same? I hear of lots of children dying of childhood illnesses and most are not homeschooled or lack vaccination.
  4. I'm concerned my son will be bored and stifled in college, like I was... A college degree can help open the doors to much opportunity. Some opportunities are completely ruled out without the proper paperwork. Until college, he can absorb and master as much as he wants. I'll gladly help. I wish the rest of the world to understand, but we're not counting on it.
  5. Anything by Asimov, Clarke, Douglas Adams, Greg Bear, or Neal Stephenson. That should keep him busy for awhile.
  6. If you've read Foundation, why did you dis/like it?
  7. My kids call me Mommy by mistake sometimes. They quickly correct themselves by saying, "I mean Daddy..." But it always gets giggles from the mothers at homeschool meets...
  8. My kids like fruit punch flavored Gatorade. It helps with the heat wave. But, the dyes make us nervous. Is there a dye-free version of Gatorade?
  9. Well, I need some more information to add a cultural label: How many and what kinds of visible tattoos do you have? Do you have all your teeth? :)
  10. I'm curious about others' experiences with EPGY. My ds9 started EPGY (LA and Math) and is advancing at a rate of a grade level a month. At this rate the courses will be complete before October. Do you just keep adding higher level courses?
  11. If we lived on a farm or in a rural area, my ds would have free rein. But, we live in a city with a registered sex offender just across the street. So, he can only go so far until we move.
  12. Yes, I love homeschooling my kids. I expect my grandchildren would be great too.
  13. We're using SM and MEP. We just added EPGY as well. My ds9 loves it. He's doing 2 sessions in each subject per day and wants more. I'm curious - do other families use EPGY as a stand alone or combined with another program? How many EPGY sessions per subject does your child do a day?
  14. I didn't know how to title this so I'll just throw it out there: A co-worker of mine said his wife will no longer take their son to his baseball practice without him because she's afraid the other parents might think she is a single parent. She believes other parents look down on single parents, especially women. Personally, I (being married and male) don't think about this type of stigma. I thought society had moved away from it decades ago. Is this something that women really worry about?
  15. Our family read the translations by Florence Lamborn. It was the first books my son laughed out loud about. Years later, he still remembers all the stories. He was sad when he reached the end of the series. I never read Pippi as a child. I loved them as an adult.
  16. Introduce him to Rube Goldberg machines: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rube_Goldberg_machine My son loves them.
  17. He'll always be Billy to me. The documentary on Easy Rider is one of my favorites.
  18. LOL! As a dad, those were my exact thoughts. However, the car forum I visit gets lots of traffic. But, no guy ever got upset over someone else's car.
  19. Well, except for the prego thing, it sounds like you live at my house.
  20. Yes, but that is only one of the reasons. I try not to mention homeschooling anymore. It takes too much time to answer their questions.
  21. While my son is still young (9yo), I think I can answer your question from my school days and as a male. Granted, it was traditional public school. I disliked school intensely and never liked prescribed schoolwork. Even college was boring to me. I've always loved learning, but traditional schoolwork never met that love. Certain subjects kept my interest but they were not covered in school. I'm a self learner. My son is similar. That's why we homeschool.
  22. Great information! I was looking for some screen shots of the program. Is there a demo system for my child to try out? I would be disappointed if it didn't resonant with my child after $135.
  23. Yes. It all looks good on paper, but reality is very different. I doubt anyone representing the school system would highlight their failures and problems.
