  1. We did Heaven and Earth last year. The reading was good, but the experiments were not. DD said the reading was kind of boring, but it WAS earth science . What year are you looking at? Dorinda
  2. Is ALL the next book from Peacehill Press in the series? What is its real name and when does it come out? ETA DOH!!!! Went to the Logic Stage Forum and found my answer at the top, in a sticky LOL!
  3. FWIW, I love teaching Writing and Grammar. I've owned (and still own) many programs that I take and tweak because I think each program has great attributes that can be used to teach English. However, I HATE BJU's program. I honestly cannot find anything good to say about it. I think you're on the right track, and I think you would do well to change. BJU grammar is all over the place, there's no rhyme or reason to its sequence, and therefore no retention. The writing portion is dull, it's also all over the place, and I didn't see where the child really learns much from it. I think you're dead on, the child learns proofreading and that's it. We dumped BJU English around February last year and used Writing Tales for the last 3 months of school. We'll continue to use that this year along with FLL 3. I'm really excited about FLL 3. Have you looked into FLL for your kiddos? If your kids enjoyed WWE, that's what I'd recommend. Blessings! Dorinda ETA My DD will be in 4th grade and I've placed her in FLL 3 because of how little she learned last year. She had already done FLL1 and 2 but was not ready for 3 last year, which was why we tried BJU 3. You might want to put your 4th grader in FLL 3 and your 2nd graders in FLL 1/2. Others encouraged me to use FLL 4, but when you look at the scope and sequence, there's so much covered in FLL 3 that BJU does not even touch on, I felt it was a bad idea. ~ Dorinda
  4. I want to be like you when I grow up.
  5. In the US, most sports organizations and camps make a Dr sign off that the child is able to participate. It's to release them of any liability of pre-existing conditions. When my oldest went to camp the first time, I was REALLY annoyed because her well child appt in Sept did not satisfy the requirement for a physical for camp in May. :glare: I was going to have to pay because we're only allowed one well child visit a year. Luckly, her Dr let me drop off the ppwk and she filled it out without charging me.
  6. We do, but we're not religious about it. I though it had only been 14 or 15 months since our last well check, but it had been 21! Then I realized, we had been to the Dr so much in the last 21 months, I lost track of time. I think the longest I would wait (if I were cognative of my decisions ;)) would be 2 years, but that's just me. I guess I should point out, we vaccinate too so if that's something you do, that's why you would want to go at least every 2 years. To make sure they're up to date. Blessings! Dorinda
  7. :iagree: You never did tell us what happened next. Wait, is that because you're in JAIL!?!? ;) Dorinda
  8. We'll have to see. The version in Modern English references what page numbers the rewrite is from. Since both are available free online, if someone was reading the Modern English version, they would be able to go back and forth if need be (can you tell I've done that:lol:) I'll probably read both. I'm like that with Bibles too many different translations.:tongue_smilie: How exciting! See you on Monday! Dorinda
  9. I guess I should have read the whole thread first. :tongue_smilie: I think 1,3 and 6 are the most popular in the series. They're also free if someone doesn't want to pay for them right away. I love it that AO has really worked to make CM so accessible to everyone!
  10. I bought the Modern English version for my Kindle. $2.99 each. A huge bargain IMO :) Is it OK if we read that version? I have tried the original and I really struggle with wrapping my head around it. Dorinda Oh, BTW, I'm Dorinda :D. I have two kids (4th and 7th) and we're using Ambleside year 2 with MOH as the spine and year 6. Blessings! Dorinda
  11. I think a social group would be better. I try to keep up with the threads, but they get buried so quickly, and they're hard to discuss on KWIM? A Social group would make it easier to discuss instead of posting, and you only have to subscribe once. Just my two cents :) Dorinda
  12. I've used Rod and Staff with a second grader, and it gets the job done. I didn't like their 3rd grade book, although now I don't remember why. We're using Spellwell and we really like it. you might want to check it out. It has levels instead of grades which has really helped my non-spelling kid. Blessings! Dorinda
  13. Thanks Tibbie (that IS your real name, right? ;)) I'll do that! Dorinda
  14. I love it and have used it every year for 7 years. I'm actually on my 2nd book:D Sometimes, I have to rework it half way through the year. Even if you can't follow it religiously (ask me if that's EVER happened), it's worth going through the motions to teach yourself to be realistic. The first year I did it, I had 25 hours worth of activities scheduled and NO SLEEP. NONE! It also taught me how to make a grocery list that worked, how to meal plan and how to be flexible. I know that sounds crazy, but it did. It gave me a visual to look at so that when the day went upside down, I didn't panic, I looked at the schedule and said, "OK, this is how we will change our day then." HTH! Dorinda
  15. Thanks! That's food for thought. I used BJU with dd last year and it was worthless. She struggled with the layout and the grading process did not match her abilities. It was very frustrating. That's why we switched to FLL. Maybe it should just be a participation "Pass" grade. Thanks! Dorinda
  16. Sorry, I guess I should have specified that she's not a 3rd grader. I'm using it with a 4th grader. That being said, I grade everything, but some things (history and science) are participation only - Always an A, and somethings (Math and English) are graded based on how the curriculum tells me to. I was anti grading with my oldest and I changed my mind when she was in 2nd grade and had no reason to preform. She was the child who saw no reason for doing the work and didn't care if she got punished for not doing it. So, I started grading and it helped. Then, when oldest was in 3rd grade, and youngest was in K, the competition that grades gave was a positive thing in our homeschool, so I've graded ever since. I should also say, I've used Rod and Staff with my oldest. I owned years 2-7 (just sold years 2 and 3) so I'm used to English being like Math. So, I guess my real question then is, IF you were going to grade a 4th grader using FLL 3, how would you do it? Would you grade the review pages? Thanks again for your help! Dorinda
  17. I got my books yesterday :hurray: I read them cover to cover, but I don't see anything about grading. Do you grade FLL 3? If so, which assignments do you grade? Do you just do a participation grade? Thanks! Dorinda
  18. Anglebee, we used level 1 and pre level 1 together. They don't matchup per say, but they're not opposing. The labs are slightly different, but tend to use the same materials. Hth! Dorinda Anglebee LOL! Darn iPhone!
  19. I'm so glad you figured out the culprit. To me, that's the most stressful part. It is frustrating. Hang in there, you're not alone!!! :grouphug: Dorinda
  20. Did you keep it light or did you do Rod and Staff type lessons?
  21. That's actually what I've done until now. I have been known to get frustrated with dd's attitude and lack of effort and give her a lower grade, but all in all she's rewritten until it's an A. Maybe there's a balance to be had. Some papers would still work like that and others would not. Hmmmm...
