  1. Someone posted a link awhile back for studiesweekly.com. I am planning on using it this fall for health and ps social studies type stuff.
  2. Check out eatright.org and see if there might be resources. I get my continuing education credits from numedix.com and continuingeducation360.com. The resources are meant for self study for dietitians but sometime you can find books for kids or the public. I don't know of any particular curriculum for allergies for kids.
  3. will try to explain this and hope I am right. I don't have paper and pencil in front of me. First, draw a bar diagram with one bar containing 144 then draw a bar diagram underneath with 3 equal parts that will add up to be the same equal length as the top bar. The first part will be mary and the other 2 parts are Juan. You need to find out how much each part is so divide 144/3 This equal 48(mary), 48*2 =96 (Juan) so after giving Melissa 16 coins he had 96. TO find out how much he had before just add 96 + 16=112 That is your answer. If I am wrong please forgive me! I think this is how you do it. Those CWP and be doozies without using algebra. Had to edit , forgot a step!
  4. Kind of had this happen to me tonight. I was at a party with friends and they were asking how homeschooling was going, and I said great. But then everyone went into a tirade about how they could never homeschool. One friend was homeschooled and said she would never do it and she is also a dance teacher and most of her students are homeschooled and are horrible and have no socialization skills. All I could say was, I think that is a discipline issue between the parents and kids and not homeschool. I think she then realized she might have offended me because then she said some of her favorite students were homeschooled. Her comments did bother me though. I know she wasn't being rude. She is very sweet. They bothered me because they make me question rather I am doing the right thing and will my kid me an unsocialized rude person. I don't think so. People always comment that my kids are well behaved, but it still bothered me. Its my first year homeschooling so maybe I am more susceptible to criticism.
  5. Math: singapore 3b grammer: FLL 3 writing: wwe 3 Latin: prima latina history: sotw 2 science: Evan moor daily science? geography: complete book of maps and geography hw: smithhand cursive spelling: spelling workout Hmm..seems like a lot. We read the bible and do scripture memory too. Extras: swimming, he wants to play football, but I am saying no. He doesn't know that yet.
  6. In the beginning of 2nd grade, I didn't reqiure much writing. He would fill out his spelling notebook, do whatever task for fll and wwe, and I would write his narrations. Now we are in the second half of second grade, and I am requiring a LOT more writing. I find when he writes down his own narrations, he does a better job. He can visually see his thoughts on paper and correct them. We go over them afterwards too, to see what grammer changes or wording need to be changed or how to make it flow better. I only have him write one narration from a subject a day. He writes for math, but I write the problems for him. He hates the physical aspect of writing but he does it. Just because I require him to do so much writing, doesn't mean I think if another second grader isn't doing this much they aren't learning what they need. I just found for my son, this works better. Especially having him write the narrations.
  7. Just have to share :tongue_smilie: Apparently I was totally clueless about bra sizes. I have nursed 3 kids and no bras ever fit my deflated balloons correctly. I tried 32A-34B. They never fit well, so I finally bit the bullet and went to a professional, not the 19 year old at Victoria Secret. I am actually a 30 DD. I laughed out loud when she said that. SO, as you go down a band size you go up a cup size. Weird! Trust me I don't have what you think of as double d's. I bought some pricey bras and feel like a new woman! I totally recommend getting fitted by someone who knows what they are doing!
  8. After reading the posts about the necessity of the HIG to teach SM, I am second guessing myself. We have been through 2a and 2b and are currently on 3a. I have the HIG for 2a, but I didn't think I really needed it because the material seemed easy. My ds has learned almost all his math facts through flash cards. Fractions are the only area that is still a challange. My concern is what the posters were saying about needing the HIG to teach the singapore way. Did I miss something? Does the TB not teach it that way??? Thanks!
  9. We use the wb, tb, ip, and cwp. I can't imagine adding anything else. We already spend a considerable amount of time on math. In my opinion, it is a very complete program especially if you add in ip and cwp.
  10. I am a little confused about which book to buy. For my kinder, do I get the K-student edition workbook? Do I need the extra tablets? For my current 2nd grader, would I get 2M student edition? THanks! Also, WHY on amazon are new prices for the book between $120-$900? What's is up with that?!
  11. My dd is in ps kindergarten and they do some phonics but not nearly enough for her to pick up reading better. They learn to try to figure out the word from the picture or from the first and last letter. She just guesses and its driving me crazy. I am bringing her home for 1st to join her brother, but I would really like to have her reading well before then. I have her read to me every night and we talk about sounds, but she needs more repitition. Does Barnes and Noble have workbooks to help this or are there other resources that helped your child? Thanks
  12. Just a few ideas. I have curly hair myself. The only time I brush my hair is when it starts to get really knotty underneath (about every 2 weeks). To put it in a bun, why don't you pully it back in a ponytail, braid it, then wrap it around to form a bun. Then slick back any frizzies in the front and sides. I would never dream of brushing curly hair unless it was wet, even for a bun. Also, you could wash her hair daily or every other day with just conditioner and see how it does. I use dove oil treatment conditioner daily and shampoo (sulfate free) twice a week. I know everyone's hair is different, but my hair is a rat's nest in the morning and I have to wash to it to make it look nie again. Another idea, instead of scrunching her hair, try twisting big sections into ringlets, air dry, then shake out the curls. Hope some of that helps!
  13. My dd is turning 6 and recently received a doll for Christmas, so I know she would love to go the store for her birthday. My mom is helping me with costs so I don't have to be super frugal, but still budget conscious nonetheless. I was thinking of treating her and 2 friends to lunch and dessert at the cafe and then .... That is my question. What next? I see they offer a doll hair salon which I think would be nice as an extra birthday surprise for my dd, BUT would it be ok to just get my dd's doll hair done or should I consider the other girls dolls too (that would be an extra$40, :bored: .) Also, I know one girl doesn't have an American girl doll, but she has a knock off one. Can she bring her or do they strictly allow American girl only? (I would hope not) I also noticed they have craft days but for 8 and up. Are they strict about that? Any experiences or ideas? Thanks!
  14. I am looking for ideas to do with my kids. What are some realistic ways you can serve your community when you have small kids in tow? I have a 7,5, and 2 year old. We have an assisted living home near us. Would 3 kids be too much to bring there and what would we do? Thanks
  15. This is my first year hsing. At first we decided to go with saxon math after reading great reviews. My son is in 2nd grade and we started with saxon 3. We used it for 2 months before throwing in the towel. It was very repetitive and slow for my son. I personally liked that about it because I felt this would help him really understand the concepts. It was becoming torture though, so we switched to singapore math. We are loving it. It can be as challanging as we need it. Every kid is different so what works for some it may not for others. Good Luck!
  16. We started with FLL 2 and I liked it, BUT my ds did not. It bored him to death, so we switched to Kiss grammar. Very different approach, but we are giving it a shot. So far no complaints from ds. Its quick and painless. Since we are not graduates of it, I can't tell you if it works, but we are planning to stick with it. Did I mention it is free?!
  17. Out sourcing sounds great. I haven't looked into it yet though. Maybe next year. Learning a foriegn language might be good for both of us too. We can see how much I remember from my 5 years of Spanish! Thank you for saying its ok to not be crafty! He is enjoying himself to the extent he can enjoy school. At least he says he is glad we are hsing and prefers it over ps.
  18. This is my first year. My son is 7. This is what we do: SM 3A, sotw ancients twice a week. He writes one narration a week and then reads extra books. We don't do any activites other than looking up the area on a map. WWE, Science narration and read extra books, hw, kiss grammer. SO I sometimes I feel like we are doing the minimum. My son is not into crafts but enjoys science experiments (we don't do these much because we both find them somewhat laborious) My 5 year old dd comes home telling about exciting activities she did in ps K and it makes me feel bad for my son. I want to bring her home next year. I want my kids to have a great education and I want to provide them that, but I question whether I am cut out for it. I am very independant and expect my kids to be to the extent they can and while I love all the crafty extras like scrapbooks, awesome timelines etc., for me personally, it would be painful to do that. I am not lazy, but saying that makes me feel lazy. Maybe its because I have a 2 year old and the thought of doing anything that extensive and having it survive seems hopeless. Based on my ramblings : ) , can you see anything I need/can improve on? I am in awe of my friends that were teachers before staying home. They always seem to do projects with their kids. Ahhh..I just don't want to jip my kids. Any ideas are appreciated thanks for reading this far!
  19. I never understood word problems as a child and I am good in math. I think I didn't understand them because they were rarely taught. Now I am making sure my ds gets lots of exposure to them (everyday) We do SM IP and CWP everyday. He is really starting to get the hang of it and I think its from pratice, practice, practice!
  20. You know the ones people usually recieve at the office. Harry and David etc.. I received one last year as a gift and loved it. I was thinking of getting a few family members a gift basket, but my dh thinks that's lame. What do you think?
  21. To be honest I use textbooks written by dietitians and accredited journals. It is difficult for those not trained in science or research to decipher whether a study is good or not. It can be hard for me too. For general questions, askthedietitian.com gives answers and I use quackwatch.org when I am searching info about fad diets, supplements, etc.
  22. My degree is in nutrition and dietetics. I'm a dietitian. With all the info out there and people claiming to have the answer to your health woes through food, I don't see how one could not be confused. Ideas change even within the health community but that is why we have to stay up on the latest guidelines and research.
  23. We are getting my daughter the melissa and Doug easel. My neice has it and I liked the quality. Amazon had the cheapest price.
