  1. I really like the idea of Apologia's younger programs, but ... I can't handle the amount of religion in there. Something similar to that -- botany, bugs, astronomy, etc. would be really neat.
  2. I'm not even sure that I'd do middle ages next year so much as just British/European history in general. I do agree w/letting her do primarily American history for the rest of the year since she's finally found something she's actually interested in.
  3. Wow, what should we call a black millipede from Africa? Or should we not reference any black animals that live in Africa? Really?
  4. Lol, interesting. I've been using it with cayenne in white sauces up until now.
  5. Hmm. There's someone who gives MY number to guys she meets at parties where she doesn't want to give them hers. After a few months I started telling them that. "Oh yes, I get men calling for her all the time, but I've never even met her, I don't know why she gives out my number."
  6. That sounds amazing. A friend of my brother's was looking at signing his 6yo dd up for dance -- he went to the nearby school for a visit, and they ... were very warm and welcoming over the phone, then when he got there and they saw that he and his dd were black, suddenly became much colder and emphasized how important uniformity in physical appearance etc. were. I wish there'd been a school like that near them.
  7. :iagree: Starting a physical activity that I kind of stink at has been wonderful for my perfectionism as an adult, and I wish there'd been something around as a child. I, btw, was exactly like your dd :P
  8. Hmm, I'd make the exception in that you're not allowed to display nipples normally, and I think brief views are gonna happen, especially if baby is a 'lookaround!' type. However, I should've said "whether to breastfeed in public or not because of modesty ought to be up to the mother", and I'll stand by that. If a woman feels immodest no matter how she's covered, she shouldn't do it. Her choice. But someone else should be able to without looking for someplace to hide or letting the baby go hungry.
  9. I don't really get the relevance of the snopes link. It seems that an idiotic sales representative wrote an idiotic story that ended up getting forwarded everywhere -- but what does that have to do with the company as a whole?
  10. My mother used it for a while -- there were several of us so the minimum monthly order worked fine. If you're interested, I can ask her about specific products. She's not using it now because she only has one child left at home.
  11. Depends. Sometimes all you can see is that the baby's mouth is attached. I've seen people where nothing at all showed, and then I've seen people who just rolled their tube top down to their bellybutton. Honestly, I think that if *you* are uncomfortable feeding in public, you have every right not to. But immodest behavior, imo, should be far more up to the individual person. There are certainly places I wouldn't want a baby being fed -- if it's not okay to feed the baby a bottle somewhere, it shouldn't be okay to feed them otherwise. And quite honestly, the toilet (which is often listed as where she should go to nurse) is someplace I wouldn't want to pop a bottle in baby's mouth.
  12. Oh, I agree with you ... but I still think it shows more than a high school diploma at the moment. But what you're saying is why a lot of fields are now going to master's/phd when they used to require a bachelor's.
  13. Yeah, this. I don't really like watching women breastfeed. So I look the other way. Just like I do when I see plumber's cracks.
  14. Hah. I heard someone at a restaurant making snarky comments about breastfeeding. Half an hour later, after they ate, she changed her baby's poopy diaper on the table. The owner came over but it was a bit late. WTF?!
  15. Are you warming the milk before you add it and stirring it in in small amounts? That really helped me with lumps.
  16. There are still a heckuva lot of people who equate breastfeeding with urination, as a necessary but disgusting thing.
  17. Ditto. I also chop all kinds of stuff into this and serve over rice as the basis for a meal.
  18. Yes. I'm vaguely involved in a situation now where they're trying very hard to shift custody from one parent to another. I have to say that given the full details ... the only thing I find horrifying is that they're not moving faster.
  19. I have a couple of *very* quick questions since you've put so much in. Turmeric -- mixed with black pepper and olive oil? really? why those specific things? I tend to use it with cayenne ... Overcooked pasta -- well, it's just nasty anyway, but al dente is okay? Do you know why? (I'm not on an anti-cancer diet, but I AM going on an anti-inflammatory diet for SO's arthritis)
  20. If we had some other certificate of functional literacy and numeracy at a reasonable level (now that a high school diploma no longer serves), it might. I've actually talked to several small employers who've moved recently to requiring at least an AA because of difficulties with literacy levels of applicants -- and for some reason, requiring a qualification tends to be okay while having a test tends to be 'discriminatory'
