how is a "california edition" textbook different
LaxMom replied to love2read's topic in General Education Discussion Board
How very... Odd. Why on earth would the students give a rat's rump what standard was being covered on any given day? -
Whatever you end up getting, there are much lower options for ink and toner than your local stores. Toner cartridges for my laser are over $80 for the manufacturer ones (more at Staples or other stores), under $30 (for compatible ones) where I order them. I can also get a full set of inkjet cartridges (black, yellow, magenta, cyan) for well under $20. I order from Supermediastore.com and have never had a problem arise with anything I've ordered from them. I know others here have additional resources for ink and toner, too, so you can really shop around.

Gift ideas needed for Amish kids
LaxMom replied to shanezomom's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I think, like any kid, it depends on the kid/family. Our Amish friends have books and farm toys, puzzels, a slip & slide... Riding toys seem popular in their yard. -
I have no idea what my parents envisioned. My dad's highest aspiration for me is that I spend my life doing what I enjoy, so I've got that covered. My mother... Well, she seems to have a vision of what I am that I have failed to live up to for the majority of my life. No idea of what that vision is, just that no matter what I do, it's not what she had in mind. Whatever. Since she's never taken the trouble to actually learn who I am, I don't get too worked up about trying to be her pretend me.

Does not one want to be called "grandma" anymore.
LaxMom replied to lynn's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I think it's a vanity thing. I plan on being a Mémé (MEH-may) when I'm a grandmother, but my family is French. -
Why the huge variance in gas prices now?
LaxMom replied to creekland's topic in General Education Discussion Board
My husband just texted a picture from the pump: $2.699! :w00t: -
I agree. My husband would also like to point out that our children's club lax jerseys are forest green and would be unsafe for them to walk around in at night. He doubts the organization would be ok with them wearing neon yellow ones, though. They would probably point out that that is not the purpose of the jersey.

dumb question of the day....ice cream makers
LaxMom replied to ProudGrandma's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Hmmmmmm. Probably. The cocoa may settle at (what is ultimately) the top of them a bit. And I think there are stabilizers in fudgesicles that keep them creamy and not icy. Does the mixture have egg yolks? I think a custard base would work better than an eggless one. -
dumb question of the day....ice cream makers
LaxMom replied to ProudGrandma's topic in General Education Discussion Board
The movement adds air and keeps the mixture from developing large crystals. It's not so much magic as mechanical. If you make ice cream in a container in the freezer, you'll want to go in periodically and rake it with a fork while it freezes. :D -
I agree that the name should appear as you specified (unless against league rules). That's not what your poll asks, though. And, personally, I think "smart parenting" has more to do with being present than whether a random stranger can figure out my kids' names. Random park-snatchers look for those they can separate from the others, and find out names through conversation with the kid. Familiar predators already know the kid's name.

advantages/disadvantages of a touch screen phone
LaxMom replied to ProudGrandma's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Funk gets stuck in the keys. My iPhone and my husband's droid both have screen locking; the screens don't activate unless we swipe the locks. If you live in a cold climate and like to use your phone outside in winter, that might be a limitation... I wear vintage kidskin gloves and my phone has no trouble, though. -
Fun thread - favorite twin names
LaxMom replied to happyhomemaker25's topic in General Education Discussion Board
My favorite twins' names are Holden and Quinn. (aka Thing 1 and Thing 2 in my siggy) :D If they had been girls, they would have been Ainsley and Genevieve. -
Craigslist etiquette question
LaxMom replied to PrincessMommy's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Yes. You should tell the second guy he can come tomorrow, or you'll contact him if the first guy decides to buy. -
Why the huge variance in gas prices now?
LaxMom replied to creekland's topic in General Education Discussion Board
No, and it doesn't explain the in-state variation either. :glare: Last time we were up, I didn't see much of a difference in ME/NH/VT prices, either. -
My daughter is playing this weekend with her name on her jersey. I never even considered being concerned about it. I understand the concern about plastering a kid's name all over them but, in all honesty, my kids don't go places without me. They don't walk to the bus stop or school, play away from home by themselves, etc. It's just not an issue. That said, if you requested something and were told your request would be accommodated, that needs to be followed through.

No, I think that was the hard drive. I don't think they had RAM then, lol, but we have one from not too long ago - within the past decade - with 256K. I remember when my step-dad brought home his new Toshiba laptop with 4MB hard drive!! Wow. My phone has more storage than that, and my PC has 4GB of RAM. (I know. Slow.)

Looking for a reading series for a 2nd grade boy
LaxMom replied to tuzor's topic in General Education Discussion Board
My end-of-second graders have just clicked into independent reading. They like Geronimo Stilton right now. And Star Wars leveled readers. Encyclopedia Brown? Boxcar Children? Magic Treehouse? My 11yo went from those horribly insipid fairy books to Harry Potter over a summer at about that age (through Spiderwick and Series of Unfortunate Events), so I probably don't have a good bead on what level anything is on. -
Binding math mammoth?
LaxMom replied to amo_mea_filiis.'s topic in General Education Discussion Board
What kind of printer do you have? The process depends on that. On my laser, it's a one-click option, on my inkjet, you have to set even pages, reverse printing, etc. -
Why the huge variance in gas prices now?
LaxMom replied to creekland's topic in General Education Discussion Board
We're around $3.29 (but with .40 off from our Giant bonus card, that's well under $3! Woot!). There is always a huge difference between what we pay over here on the eastern shore and prices in Annapolis and the DC metro area - 40-60 cents. (which I always find funny since we're on the edge of nowhere and there's less demand... You'd think we would pay higher prices just based on the delivery distance and lack of volume) -
Binding math mammoth?
LaxMom replied to amo_mea_filiis.'s topic in General Education Discussion Board
If you're adding pages (and we like to do that with MEP, when they need a little more practice in one area), the Arc may be an asset. It will definitely split the difference between 3-ring and binding. It's basically the same as the Circa system people love here, but cheaper. My punch was $39, full price. The discs (1.5" holds 200 pages) are much less, too. For my personal notebook, where I keep class routines for work, I got some unpunched cd sleeves, punched them, and added them, so my class music is right there, too. Not that that helps you with math, but if you have anything you need a notebook and cd for... ;) -

Arc notebook. At Staples. How many pages is it? We used MM before, and it didn't seem like all that many sheets per book, but we did the blue series one topic per, not the full curriculum books.
