  1. I'm not so happy now! Maybe a retest would have been fairer. What do you guys think, should we contact the College Board with this concern? They might offer a free retest???
  2. Good point. I'm happier than my daughter because I know how tough it would be to reschedule a make-up test this summer. She is very confident that she did well on the 2 sections that will be thrown out. Her test room also followed protocol. She's bummed because she wanted to know the score on all the sections. But overall, I'm happy! This is her first time taking the SAT so it will be a benchmark score.
  3. Yay! The 2 20 minute sections will not be graded, but reliable scores will still be reported during the usual time frame! Doing the happy dance here!
  4. In my daughter's classroom, the proctor wrote the starting and ending times on the blackboard in the front of the classroom. But I agree with the pacing issue. My daughter wore a watch so she could make sure she was pacing herself properly. Five minutes makes a huge difference on a 20 minute test.
  5. These are great ideas! My older daughter has a part-time job now handling social media for a non-profit and both my girls volunteer for various organizations. My goal is to provide the the skills / knowledge to have options while they are in college and later of course. Unfortunately for my rising senior, lifeguarding and such are out. I realized last night that both girls would be great tutors and tutoring pays decently. At least, I think it does.
  6. I just hope a decision is made soon! Depending on her scores, my DD knows she may retake the test in the fall, but to be left hanging is stressful. The testing time were correct for her group. She didn't even realize there was a problem until I asked her. None of the students raised the issue. At this point, she just wants to know how she did. Edited to add that I'm frustrated because she left feeling very good about how she did. Now this!
  7. The proctor for my daughter's group used the correct times for each section. So, what happens if the test is considered invalid? Will the kids have to wait until fall or will there be another test administered this summer?
  8. I've been thinking about this a lot lately. My older daughter will be graduating next year. She's a solid student and intends to continue her studies at a university. She'll have to work during the summers and possibly during the school year. I want to help her obtain job skills that might lead to better paying student jobs, but I'm having a hard time listing specific skills. So far, she and my younger daughter will be learning Microsoft Office 2013 this summer. Both girls know the basics, but I want them to learn in greater detail. Both girls have good work ethics and are used to interacting with the public in volunteer positions. The current job market is so different than it was when I was in school many years ago. I work, but it's in a customer service type position. What other job skills can be learned quickly and might lead to better jobs? My very short list: Microsoft Office Suite
  9. My daughter, a rising senior, hasn't taken any subject or AP tests yet. She's a dual credit student at our local community college and doing very well.. As far as I know, this CC is well regarded at least locally. Would it be worthwhile for her to take AP tests now since the tests won't be given until spring of her senior year? She hasn't decided if she wants to finish an A.A. degree or apply to a 4 year university. Not graduating with much student debt is very important.
  10. American Pharoah won so easily, by over 5 lengths! The first triple crown winner since 1978. He's quite a horse. The race was fun to watch. Anybody else excited!
  11. My daughter was able to finish all the sections thankfully! She said she thought the math was about as she expected it to be but the language arts sections were easier. Her group of students had to be moved from their original classroom to another because of air conditioning problems in the original room. The proctor checked with the College Board before moving the kids. This is her first time taking the SAT. She'll likely take it again in the fall along with the ACT.
  12. Homeschool Buyers Co-op is offering mathhelp.com free for the summer.
  13. DFW area here. We lost power briefly last night but it's back on this morning. We're in an area that doesn't flood typically. One of our buildings where I work had standing water in part of it while I was working last night. There wasn't much I could do about it then.
  14. In Texas, the first time you apply is the toughest with an in-person interview. After that, many of the interviews are conducted over the phone and supporting materials faxed or mailed. I've had friends go through the process. Let the social workers know about the conflict with the interview time. Maybe they can reschedule. Hang in there! Praying for you and your family.
  15. Check for specials and coupons. Care Now in our area often has specials for sport physicals this time of year. You have to check the website because the employees usually don't know. Otherwise, the prices you have been quoted are reasonable for this area.
  16. This morning 192 gang members were arrested for organized crime activities. Also, apparently the restaurant owner had been refusing to cooperate with the police even though the gang meeting was know to the restaurant management ahead of time. eta: spelling
  17. My daughter applied for the bronze medal first simply because we procrastinated. Her next step was the silver medal. She has all the requirements for the gold except the exploration / expedition. Both my girls have some ongoing activities such as singing for personal development, zoo for volunteer hours etc. They get the record book forms validated several times a year depending on the activity. Each girl has a notebook for the forms and logs of time spent such as physical fitness for my older daughter. My younger daughter studies karate and has decided to use those hours for physical fitness instead of personal development.
  18. For my daughters, most of the activities were signed by the people supervising them. For example, their zoo volunteer hours were validated by the volunteer coordinator. There chorus hours were validated by the choir director. The advisor is over the entire program. Frankly, my daughters' advisor hasn't spent much time with either girl. Usually, she just signs the paper after talking with them about the hours they are claiming. My older daughter is working on the gold medal slowly. She will likely need more time with her advisor as she finalizes her exploration / expedition plan.
  19. I've been reading all the wonderful posts about geometry and I'm still confused. We need something relatively inexpensive and clear / easy to follow. I saw the BJU geometry student text at Mardel's and liked the way it looked, but I'm undecided. Same for chemistry. I liked the way the text looked. For my older daughter, I used Apologia chemistry. It's too wordy! I would really appreciate comments on either of these texts.
  20. Praying for everyone there and especially for your girls.
