  1. I'm working on the school budget/list for next year. I think it's just a box of balls and sticks ... but I'm not sure. Does anyone know how much these cost? I just need a number to stick out beside it on the list. thanks!
  2. :iagree: One of my all time best purchases. :001_smile:
  3. I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I can't seem to find anything recent. This morning as I was looking on one of our bookshelves for a book for my dd, I pulled out a book that I had just written on my FOR SURE to BUY book list for next year. I need some sort of easy to add to and maintain (and cheap) book list system/program/thingy. What do you guys use? thanks!
  4. If you have access to pbs or the internet (:001_smile:) --- Then you have free access to The Wild Kratts and The Magic School Bus. The Wild Kratts comes on at least once a day on pbs, the Magic School Bus comes on Qubo -- and both can be found in full episodes for free on the internet. I am a scientist, and I can't tell you how much I've learned from those two shows! So, if you have just those 2 shows - You have science!
  5. I'm just trying to find out which most of you BFSU users use. I love the price tag on the $5 pdf, but just don't know if I would use it without it being in print. I know I'm the one that has to use it in the end, but I just wanted find out how you guys use it ... kwim? thanks
  6. We have finally decided on RS Spanish for our rising 5th grader. I had decided that we would just get the package that has levels 1-2, but now I'm wondering if we should get 3 also. I know that we save money buying the bigger packages --- or waste money if we don't like it. Opinions please!
  7. Yes, that's it! I've been trying to think of the name since last night. Thank you so much!
  8. There is a dvd lecture series on LOTS of different topics that gets used a lot in middle and high school. I have heard people talk about that for years. I have seen them used for things like lit and history. It's a super common series (yet, maybe pricey?). I know our library has a lot of them, but for the life of me I can't remember the name. I really want to watch the New Testament ones, but can't reserve them without knowing their name. I know they have been mentioned in discussions on this board. If anyone can point me in the right direction ..... PLEASE DO!!! Thanks
  9. I bought mine before Christmas at Sam's -- it only has warm, low and high too.
  10. We just started GSWL. So far, we are loving it ... much more than Prima Latina.
  11. I'm a big fan of AAS, but it's very teacher intensive. If I were going to switch to something else, I think it would be R&S spelling.
  12. We just finished a two year history tour using all sorts of picture books and read alouds read chronologically. Last week we started with CHOW and so far we are all really liking. It's SO easy to read. We are doing a chapter a day.
  13. Thank you all so much for taking the time to help with this. It means the world to have such an amazing support group.
  14. I'm x-posting this on here b/c this board sees more action than the workshop board.:001_smile: I'm attempting to move us away from the WWE workbook and into writing across the curriculum --- without a safety net (except for you guys). I'm starting just in science. We have done WWE1 and WWE2, have just this week started R&S English 4 and AAS4. DD10 is NOT a natural speller. We (all 3 kids) sat on the couch and read a book about Insects. After finishing, Dd got up to go do her assignment which was to write 5-6 good sentences. This is the completed paragraph: Insects are bugs with six legs. They eat plants or other insects. Most insects live for only one year. Their bodies are divided into three segments. Their segments are the head, thorax and abdomen. Sentence #1: on the paper already when I sat down - no changes Sentence #2: on the paper already when I sat down - no changes Sentence #3: I didn't note her original sentence, but orally it was something like: Insects live for one season, one year or two years. I said something to the affect of it being a little wordy. She thought for a few moments - I believe I said something about using the word most - and just talking about "most" of the insects. She came up with the final sentence. She was stuck at this point, but this book really did jump all over the place. I didn't do a good job of selecting something that would be easily to write about. I said well, what about their bodies? This was the main thing I wanted them to grasp from the book. They will use the info for drawing and labeling tomorrow. Sentence #4: Her original spoken sentence: Their bodies are broken into three pieces. I said that it sounded good, but lets think of some other words that we could use instead of broken and pieces. I proceeded to be Mrs Thesaurus. I rattles off several words. She made the final word choices. Sentence #5: She thought her paper was finished, but I said don't you want to say what these segments are called. She wrote the sentence on her own. I spelled abdomen and thorax on the board for her. Spelling: there for their - pointed our homophone bodyes for bodies - I asked if there was a spelling rule for that word - she changed it without further help. other - asked how to spell - I wrote it on the board divided - asked how to spell I wrote it on the board That's it. Hope it makes some sense. I think she choose words/sentences that she could easily write on her own. The narrations we did with WWE, with me doing the writing were a little more complex. She does not have a problem with penmanship. I need all the advice you can give. Do you think that the sentences are in good order? (I was wondering if the body segments shouldn't have been written with the number of legs sentence ???) I need help learning how to coach her. I just need any and all writing help that you are willing to give. Please ask me questions if anything needs to be clarified further.
