  1. Please let me know what you find out., Julie. I knew about the fine arts, but I had planned on using piano lessons (before looking into it). I don't think I can use that now, as it says history and appreciation of visual, performing. The other thing I hadn't counted on was demonstrated competency of foreign language. I hadn't planned on testing, and I don't know of any other way to do that. On a side note, is there a statewide homeschool association?
  2. This is what it says "Three credits of Science. Credits to include life science, physical science, and earth/space science (at least one lab)" Do you think that means either/or, Regentrude?
  3. We just moved to Kentucky (2 months ago) and are about to start high school. I pulled the required subjects for the University of Louisville (20 minutes from us) and it calls out Earth and Space Science (3 total science: Life, Physical and E&S). I then pulled the state graduation requirements and it reads the same. I've never contemplated this, I'm not certain that she will go to school there of course, but would certainly want this base covered. Please start me out here. thanks so much!!!
  4. My books are packed at the moment and I can't remember is CLE Math 800 follows the same pattern as the rest of the series. Does it have 17 lessons - 2 quizzes, 1 test and the last lesson is extra work? Meaning 13 lessons, 2 quizzes, 1 test, and 1 discovery type lesson. Just thinking ahead and it's hard without my books! thanks so much Angela
  5. My email from Veritas Press says that you must start course by Sept 1, 2016.
  6. Veritas Press will be giving $100 off self paced, omnibus and bible starting Nov 27 - plus they will donate a course to a needy child for every course bought.
  7. Thank you all SO much for writing. 8 years homeschooling, and I feel like a newbie all over again entering high school for the first time. I made the leap to "college text" because on the pinned list of biology text it has the comment about not attempting the entire Miller-Levine book for reg. bio. I just assumed that it was a college text that was being used for high school. I do now see that it is listed under public school books. So much to learn! thanks again for all of your time (and for answering the other newbie questions I'm sure to ask in the future! LOL)
  8. I'm sure someone will get on here to answer this better... But it's online TV. Like youtube sort of. I've watched a few videos from another homeschool mom. I believe you can watch the videos live, or view recorded ones later.
  9. Please send me links if this is answered elsewhere! If you are using any of the College level (for lack of better description) science text, how did you decide which chapters/topics to cover. I've seen several times mentioned that you should not attempt to cover the entire text. How did you make the decision of what to include? I'm especially interested in Biology for a soon to be 9th grader. Any advice or direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
  10. Oak Meadow is having a 10% off sale the week after. Code GoOut10.
  11. I asked on the Veritas facebook page if they were planning a Black/Cyber sale. The response back was basically sign up for the newsletter for announcements of sales.
  12. I haven't seen anything. I was hoping that Veritas would run a self-paced sale. I think IEW is having a clearance sale.
  13. Check out Amscope. That's where we got both of ours. Great prices and quality. Hth
  14. Information: DD13 is using GSWL (accelerated - she has some Latin experience) and then will be moving on the First Form (with DVD)around Christmas. It looks to be a perfect fit for her type A personality. So, this question is somewhat geared more towards DD10 and DS8 (but DD13 still thrown into the mix). Also, Latin is in the list of top priorities for DD13, while it is in the low/mid range for dd10. More Information: Since this is in the low/mid range of importance for dd10 (will move up in ranks as she gets a little older) I have been looking at programs/books etc that are sort of like dipping our toes into the water. I have Prima Latin, looked at LFC, and Song School. While playing the videos for SSL everyone stopped what they were doing and watched the sample video (even dd13). So, I thought "GREAT!" Fun, engaging and easy. I'll get the workbooks for the two youngers and all three can watch the videos together, because DD13 liked them too and any extra exposure can't hurt (while she does her own Latin). Question: At their age (and my desired outcome) would you: 1. Just get the DVD for SSL (&SSL2??) and let them enjoy Latin exposure. 2. Get one workbook and just do the exercises orally? 3. Just get a workbook for each kid and go through them? Which brings up one more question: With all things considered, would we want to go ahead and get SSL2 because we will just blow through SSL1 at their age? Any thoughts welcome and appreciated. thanks Angela
  15. I'm looking for a geography program that the kids could do on their own. I would love something like VPs self paced history. Is there anything like that? I can't find anything. I would like for them to learn basic physical geography, map reading, country names, location, etc. Cultural would be a bonus. Thanks in advance!
  16. Thank you! Thank you! I was multiplying by 100 instead of dividing. You made my day a lot easier Thanks again Angela
  17. My brain might still be asleep this morning, because I can't remember how to do these. If anyone has a few minutes could you please give me a 101. Thanks! Write the equivalent fractions: 1. 33 1/3 % = 2. 83 1/3% = 3. 66 2/3% = 4. 16 2/3% = Answers: 1. 1/3 2. 5/6 3. 2/3 4. 1/6
  18. My kids use ARHW to learn both print and cursive and then Pentime, for practice. I just love the copywork in Pentime. My 2nd grader needs much more time with print, but wants a Pentime book also. Just wondering if books 1 & 2 have the nice copywork that is found in the later cursive books or is it primarily letter formation practice? Does that make sense? The samples I've seen aren't much help. Thanks Angela
  19. This is the post that I just got finished typing on another thread about Megawords. I'm just going to copy and paste it here. Just in case it helps you. FWIW, she was a terrible speller until we started doing this with Megawords. : Megawords has worked wonderfully with my 7th grader. I give a pretest for each unit. Then use the missed words from the pretest to do a quick daily check on the white board. She has to spell the words correctly 5 times (5 days - I just use tally marks by the word) for the word to come off the list (one line drawn through the word). This check only takes a couple of minutes a day. If she is really having trouble with a word, I just have her write it 5,10 or 15 times (depending on how long this word has been hanging out on my list!) Then during the week there are a few directed quick checks and dictating (all in the TM) that only take a few minutes each. During these quick checks and dictations, more missed words are added to my master list. At the end of the unit I give a post test. Rinse repeat. At the end of the book, I use my list of missed words as the final test. We skip the writing exercises and some of the reading exercises (all though she usually does them anyway.) She does all of the workbook pages independently. hope that helps Angela
