  1. As some of you know my husband has been entertaining job opportunities in different states. Michigan was mentioned last night. I've read somewhat conflicting (confusing) things about the regulations. Would someone living in Michigan please give me a quick overview. Thanks
  2. Thanks so much for the info. Now for the hard part .... deciding WHAT we are DOING.
  3. We are possibly entertaining a move to Colorado. Since we would be leaving a "no test" state and moving to a "test" state, I'm thinking about just going ahead and giving my kids the CAT. This would help to ease some of the potential moving stress. I would pretty much just pop the results into a file and mark a big mental check mark in my head. From everything I've read, the CAT is an accepted test, but I can't seem to find out if there is a certain time of year that you are suppose to give it. The law says 3rd and 5th grade. So, 5th grader now and 2nd grader next year? OR would my 2nd grader take it in late spring after "finishing" 2nd grade b/c she would be going into 3rd? thanks so much
  4. Ok, kind of silly here .... I'm filling this out for dd11 5th grade. She has to take the theme test on Perseus and the Mythological Monsters as well as the 30 question regular test. Under "Exam" on the order form, I only see "2013 National Mythology Exam" for $4. Is this extra test (Perseus) included in that, or am I overlooking another box I should be marking? Also, I should order this is my name, right? And, I can't order this online, right? Thanks for the help!
  5. I was looking around on Home Science Tools, but can't seem to find a slide set that matches up nicely with ES Logic Bio. Is there one out there? We plan to start this after Christmas break. thanks so much!
  6. I just started looking at the National Mythology Exam yesterday. It says for 5th grade that the 30 question test is required plus 10 questions on the theme, but that you may choose to take another section. What is the purpose of taking the test in another section? Is it just to test your student - or is there more to the reward for having passed another section? Thanks so much!
  7. I'm making my list and checking it twice .... okay, okay, I'm just starting the process of thinking about making a list :001_smile:. What fun schooly type things are you getting (or wishing) for? Art? Kits? Books? More, More, More????
  8. I PM'ed you yesterday with our info. Hope you got it! Thanks for doing this!
  9. Is it too late to get in on this? Dd10 really wants to do this. thanks
  10. Is there anywhere I can see a demo of Plato Science? I've looked and looked but come up empty. thanks!
  11. Thank you all for responding! Where did you buy this book? thanks
  12. Please recommend a basic first aid book for dd10. She knows a little about basic first aid, but would love to know more. thanks!
  13. That's just going to take lots of practice. She spent all this time learning these sounds and the blends to have it all blown away with one stinking letter. :glare: I love this video from the Electric Company. Silent E really is a ninja. It sneaks into a word and FORCES the vowel before it to say it's name. I believe ETC 3 does a lot of work with Silent E. OK, I'm going to ask you a question .... how well do YOU know your phonics? I'm not sure how I ever read anything, b/c I didn't know 90% of the rules until I taught dd10 to read when she was 6. I learned right along with her. It has made teaching dd7 so much easier b/c I finally understand WHY a word sounds the way it does. That might be something to think about. She might also need some "wins" to build her confidence. Be super excited when she reads something...anything.
  14. We've had great success using a combination of Hooked on Phonics, Explode the Code and readers like Bob and Nora Gaydos.
  15. I just use a clear plastic index card box (sterlite?) from walmart that cost $1-$2. It's not the standard index card size, but the next size up. I keep a stack of blank index cards behind the rest of the cards so I can add any extra words we need help with. We're going through 2 levels (2kids), so I taped color coded post-it notes on the lid & on the front of the box. I just look at the color and know which box to grab. hth
