  1. Latin -- the subject that was always bumped, tossed and forgotten, is being given a new home in "online teacher world". Please give me feedback, suggestions and hints (ie please sway me towards a particular program). I'm kinda thinking between VP and MP. Mainly b/c they seem to have classes that are for middle school intro students (dd12, rising 7th). For the record, I have never ever taken Latin and this discussion makes my head hurt. Therefore, we do not want a class that "moves fast", or at least I don't think we do. Any and all opinions, info etc is greatly appreciated thanks Angela
  2. I'm trying to decide this very thing right now. Which did you pick and why? thanks Angela
  3. My husband is in Indianapolis interviewing right now -- looks very promising. So, I've been trying to gather info. Dd12 REALLY wants to go to school (she needs a break from siblings - and needs some friends), but DOES NOT want to go to full time school. Can you please help me with the names of places she could attend classes (not co-op, but pay tuition, take classes sort of thing). I've found Highlands Latin School (3 days per week or individual classes) and Northpoint (individual classes). Are there more out there? I can't seem to find any. Thanks for taking the time! Angela
  4. Thank you, Thank you! One look at the answers and I was like "OH MY GOODNESS!" I know how to do that! My only defense is that I've switched to decaf. Thanks for taking the time!
  5. 2/9 of 27 = ______ I know that you multiply to get the answer, but looking for the "why". It would seem like it "should" be divided. Found myself ALMOST saying "that's just how you do it", but stopped myself. Please explain the "why" to me, so I can pass it on thanks a bunch
  6. When we first started homeschooling, Latin was a must b/c it was written in WTM. It was written in there so it must be done! Well, we bought PL and videos and lasted a couple of weeks in 3rd grade. Then again in 4th grade -- couple of weeks. Then in 5th I bought LC and videos -- lasted a couple of weeks. I don't read Latin, I don't understand Latin and therefore it is ALWAYS the first thing that gets dropped. My dd12, now half way through 6th, does not like it either -- but I think it's b/c she believes it's too hard b/c of this on again, off again habit. At the end of the day, I think I want the kids to "do" Latin b/c that's what "smart" kids do. (I know not a good reason, or even a good thought -- but it does seem to give me some ammunition/buffer against some of our family who are not homeschool supporters - or perhaps it would be better to say "bragging rights"-- even though this is probably the least reason) I also want to do it b/c of vocabulary study and b/c dd has aspirations to go to an upper tier college (which might involve a private classical high school in the future) and I think this would help with that too. I am just rambling in here! I just need some advice, words of wisdom, curriculum suggestions, anything that you can lovingly throw my way! thanks so much
  7. I just want to throw in that we switched to CLE this year and LOVE it.
  8. Have you tried an oatmeal bath? We use prescription ointment here, but soaking in oatmeal helps too.
  9. My kids absolute favorite is Discovery Atlas. http://www.amazon.com/Discovery-Atlas-Collection-James-Spader/dp/B002KLQ31W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1382060807&sr=8-1&keywords=discovery+atlas
  10. Murrayshire, I spent some time yesterday looking at Elemental Science and your very nice blog. Would you please tell me why you would not just use ES Logic Chemistry (I think it's due out at anytime)? It's early, and my eyes are still blurry so I might have missed that somewhere along the way! :001_smile: I'm a tinker by nature and have been looking at ES to use as a guide to piece together a bio/earth science for my rising 6th grader. I really like having the student sheets to flesh out a science notebook. Thanks for taking the time!
  11. Is there some source out there for general science type sheets that I'm not aware of? I looked at the Giant Science Resource book by Evan-Moor and that's kind of what I'm looking for, except that stuff doesn't even look CLOSE to 6th grade stuff. I'm mainly looking for something to flesh out their science notebooks - like the students sheets in the back of SOTW AG. Not word searches or puzzles, but more like labeling and coloring a diagram of an animal cell, etc, etc, etc. I would love for it all to be in one place (or a few) so that I don't have to go searching for every little thing. I haven't nailed down which branches of science we will be studying this year. At first, I wanted to do a complete overview year, but now.... deeply unsure. I will do all the kids together, with dd11 doing more readings, etc. thanks for all your help Giant Science Resource book http://www.amazon.com/Giant-Science-Resource-Book-Grades/dp/1557996962/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1369833852&sr=1-1&keywords=giant+book+evan+moor
  12. Does anyone know of any post (i only found 2 old ones) or blogs that describe a homeschool science area? I'm working on a nook in the laundry room and am looking for any ideas out there. thanks so much!
  13. These are some great suggestions. Are there any Scientist in the Field books that you particular liked/ did not like? thanks again!
  14. We started out with Let's read and Find out - then moved on to the Seymour Simon books. What would be the next "level" of science books series? thanks for all recs
  15. I'm looking to add a few of these into my rising 6th graders science for this next year. She's doing an overview, so any type would work. Which ones have you/dc enjoyed/learned from the most? Thanks
  16. I'm putting together our history list for the coming school term. What books did you enjoy for the Ancient Americas (any civilization/region) fiction or nonfiction? My crew range from 1st-6th. Thanks so much
  17. If you've used this would you please share your thoughts. I'm thinking of using it for my dd11 and possibly going through it myself. Thanks so much!
  18. :lurk5: Bumping - I have the same question, except mine is a girl.
  19. Just planning for my last round of ETC (haven't bought his books yet). I have always cut the binds off and hole punched. This year, I'm trying to keep everything in workbooks. Just easier for me now. Do you find that your littles have difficulty writing in the workbook as is? thanks for answer a silly question!
  20. I bought TWISS and SWIA a year ago for dd11. Keyword outlines just didn't work with her. She had tears and hated it. Fast forward one year later and still no writing. We're heading back to ancients for history - light bulb - look into IEW again for ancients. Looking at the samples for ancients, it just seems totally different. I thought that you could use Ancients in place of SWIA, but the lay out doesn't look the same to me. I may not be making a lot of sense, I'm in curriculum/planning overload. Could someone please advise me? thank you
  21. I really don't know what I'm looking for, but I was thinking about some sort of workbook that would serve as enrichment to our bible study. I'm not really looking for fill in the blanks or word searches. Maybe something like a paragraph or two summarizing the story/event and then map work or family tree tracing or something like that. I'm really not looking for theology, more like Bible as straight history. I know there are several atlases out there (req those too, if you have one you love), but I was thinking more along student work. kwim? clear as mud? thanks so much
  22. Thanks for the reqs! I can't believe it's planning time at my house again. This year blew by crazy fast.
  23. I think we are jumping from Horizons to CLE math. Dd11 did okay in the placement test, but BOMBED fractions. I would like to put her through a fractions "boot camp". I'm not looking for a complete curriculum (already own MUS fractions), just a good basic fractions workbook. Pages must be uncluttered with lots of white space (think MUS or CLE). Any suggestions? thanks so much
