  1. Hugs from me too, and prayers flying for your dd and your family.
  2. This is us. I have books stuffed everywhere. We are between houses and in an apartment. For a few more months, I will have them piled up on dressers, stuffed in the drawer of the coffee table, in a small table type hutch- anywhere I can find. Not to mention the bookcases that are stuffed full! Hope you figure out a solution.
  3. So sad. I will be prsying for your dd to lestn from this experience and process all of it, and for the girl's family as well. What a tragedy.
  4. Oh Dawn, my heart is broken for little Hannah's family. We know a family that lost their 8 year old son to an aggressive brain tumor. I am so thankful they still have two boys here on Earth to keep them going. Such heartache. I will be praying for Hannah's family. Mom 2-7, I am already praying for your daughter. What an awful situation. Prayers are going up for you too, Momma! Jenn, I am praying for your dd as well. Praying for it to be benign and not something serious. Praying for you too. Gosh, lots of trials right now. I will be praying for all of us.
  5. Nothing new - can't get into the discussions! How is everyone? I miss our little group. =)
  6. You guys can bash me all you want that's fine. I don't really care - I just know that in my neck of the woods, no one ever would let two 6 year olds walk a mile anywhere. Just wouldn't happen. I have lived here all my life and I used to walk to school every day. I would ride my bike around our large neighborhood and end up 8-9 streets over from my house and ride back safely. All of us kids used to trick or treat alone and we would hang around in the streets in my neighborhood eating ice cream from the ice cream man and stuff like that. But you really don't see this kind of thing as much around here anymore. It is extremely rare to see a lone child walking somewhere. I have seen 2, probably in the last 12 years that I have lived in my city - a city, by the way, that is one of the safest in California. Both kids were 8 or 9. I am very glad there are places in America where you can still let your 6 year olds walk around by themselves, but it is not here.
  7. I think you are correct. MOH has questions built in. I don't know if you'd even want the guide if you are doing just MOH, unless you are using it for Bible and English. The English assignments are not as spelled out in the guide - you could probably make your own English if you wanted to. Maybe use recommended WTM readings with a study guide? Also, the Cool History has Bible references and questions that help make up the Bible credit. You could, of course, do something for Bible too. You can download a sample of a page of the guide on Biblioplan's website - it is worth a look for you and your needs. I really like the maps and the Cool History, but the MOH questions are good too. Dd was in private school through 8th grade, so she is used to a worksheet format and likes it. I don't have the timeline because I still have one from MFW. Overall, I am very happy with Biblioplan.
  8. KK, don't be too embarassed. Just the fact that there are products on the market for this means that you are not the only one dealing with this!! I agree with the Kegels- they will be essential when you hit your mid 40s- things start happening when you get older! =P
  9. The problem lies in the fact that you are not there to protect your child. If your dc walks to school, a freak pulls up in a car or jumps out of a bush, grabs the child and drives away, you were not there to prevent or stop it. Of course, your generic freak or weirdo wouldn't even TRY to grab a child with the mommy right there. If you drive your child in the car and get into a car accident, I'm going to assume that there wasn't any negligence on your part. Accidents happen. There really is not a connection- they are two completely different scenarios. Seriously- have you never heard of Jaycie Dugard? Samantha Runnion? Jacob Wetterling? Jaycie was walking to the bus stop. She was tazered and kidnapped and held for 18 years. Samantha was playing with a friend outside of her grandmother's apartment. She was found raped and murdered the next day. Jacob was riding his bike on a country road. He has never been found. All seemingly doing "safe" things, in "safe" neighborhoods. Good God - wake up - this is your child's LIFE on the line. And yes, it is your fault if something happens to them if you've sent them out on their own. I can't believe anyone would take that risk.
  10. What a wonderful story! God has given both you and her such a blessing - congratulations!!! :hurray:
  11. This happened to my sister. She ended up morbidly obese and dying from a two week battle with cancer that her body could not fight at all. Please stand firm on this. Make sure you talk to hubby and stay firm about your eating habits.
  12. So, so sorry for you and your Monkey. How awful. :grouphug:
  13. People are afraidbecause there are freaks and weirdos everywhere. Pedophiles look for kids that are alone. I am not going to let my dd be the one that gets abducted. It would be my fault if I had allowed her to go somewhere on her own and she was taken. Every parent has the right to make those decisions themselves- if it doesn't bother you, don't worry about it. Now that she's 15 1/2, I let her go a lot of places on her own. But still, we are in Southern California- there are a lot of weirdos here! ETA: It is really not an issue of whether or not your child can get to/from somewhere by themselves in a safe manner. The issue is who happens to be in the area watching your child. The people are out there. They just are. It is naive to think that they are not in your neck of the woods, and it is that type of naivete that can cost your child his/her life.
  14. Dawn- I will be praying for the family. So sad. Still can't get into group discussions! Hope you all had a great weekend!
  15. We own one outright, we borrowed $$$ from retirement to pay for another- we are paying ourseves back on that one, and the third is a regular car loan.
  16. The only lit guide I have right now is for Beowulf and its from Progeny Press. We haven't used it yet, but will in the next few weeks. I like what I see in it- it has vocab review and good questions, I am definitely giving my dd English credit for the readings for year 2. I am going to do the lit guide with dd at first to get her started and make sure she is giving intelligent answers and has the hang of it. Dd is a STEM kid and she hates analyzing literature, which is why she's getting the hand-holding treatment at first! We didn't do Ancients, so I don't know about that one- sorry!
  17. I can't get to the group discussions right now, like all of you. I have notified John of the problem, but I think it's happening with all of the social groups. Just wanted to say "hi!" and give you the update (or lack of update!) Still praying for our little group. :)
  18. We bought my dd a Ti-84 Silver Edition and she's in Algebra 2. We bought the one that she is allowed to use on the SAT.
  19. We are using Biblioplan for the first time and my dd LOVES it. She looks forward to it, and this is a STEM kid who usually thinks history is "boring". We use Cool History for advanced, the Hands On Maps, the Family Guide (lesson plans), the Companion and MOH. I have dd do the worksheets/essays for Cool History and just the readings for MOH. We really like it, and when she comes in to tell me a cool fact, I know she's learning!!
  20. Yes. Ours is delicious and the workers are always beyond polite. One girl told me that's how they are told to be - they don't put up with rude employees, it's all about the customers. Yay!
