  1. We continue to enjoy our new schedule, in spite of all the changes. Hope everyone else is having a good year, too.
  2. My daughters started at a private Christian school after 4 years of homeschooling. We have had a pattern: homeschool, public, homeschool, private. This is our last "change" most likely & we will remain with the Christian school. Oldest is in 9th, one in 8th, youngest in 5th. They have loved all of the "friend" opportunities that school has provided (I decline to call the opps "social" as I consider all interaction, family included, to be "social")...it was always what they looked forward to most when homeschooling-Coop Day! We have had great experiences across the board. I have worked through the grieving process of giving up my Homeschool enough to join the afterschoolers here now. I'm glad there's a place for me here still. Hope the public school situation is going well!
  3. You got it, Karis. I'm not even interested in joining the frenzy, although I can understand if some who are clearly educated on the matter would be upset and take a position. Anyway-you took the words right out of my mouth. Just noticing, which I probably should have kept to myself. :grouphug:
  4. Rumors. Wow, quite a conversation. Any facts flying around? Oh, nah, who needs them? (By the way, I happen to agree with many of the analyses. Just hate when we get to throwing the "I heard..." around.)
  5. Saxon's website suggests going with 8/7 & moving on to Algebra 1 after that, if student makes 80% or above on all tests. I am trying to figure out math issues/curr., too. Just read that today. Anyway, that's their take & it makes sense to me. I think WTM recommends Alg 1/2 if student is doing well. I think I prefer doing Saxon's rec. in my case. Saxon Teacher dvds can take your child through all of their math courses, as well. If that's your preferred method :001_smile:
  6. Memoria Press Latin is great. We have used Prima Latina and Latina Christiana. They have a forum, too. If you head to their forum and ask which program to start with, their friendly Curr. Advisor will answer your question personally within a couple of days (usually one business day!). www.memoriapress.com link to forum is toward the bottom of left side naviagtion. I don't have Latin either, but once I got used to the format & started learning along with the kids, it went well! We are about to start First Form, one of their newer Latin Programs. All the best!
  7. We use Writing Strands...my vote-Writing Strands! Writing Strands! It's so easy to use and make it simple to understand. Which tells me that he understands writing. If you do summaries, narrations, ect. there is no need to do more writing than what is included in WS.
  8. If I were you, I'd wait it out. Let the emotions pass before you pull the kiddos out of school. Another change will require yet more adjustment time. If you give the year a chance, it may work out better than you think. It will also give you time to evaluate what is the right thing for your family. And you can still do Core 5 next year. That is just my opinion. I am not in your shoes, but I have had the kids in ps and at home. I almost pulled them out one year-turned out to be a great year and I grew through the difficulties that we experienced as well. Unless it is urgent, I would wait.
  9. "It would be hard giving up homeschooling, but if it makes for a stronger family unit in the end, it would be worth it." That really is the question...I've done both, put them in preschool & k5, take them out, put them back in preschool, 1, & 2 thru K5, 3rd & 4th. Now, back out. Anyway-if it will be better for your family, then do it. If not, don't. Don't worry about if this is "quitting" or not. Just do what you have peace about. If the homeschooling bug doesn't go away, find an opportune moment to pick it back up! :grouphug:
  10. Ya'll are a trip. I agree with a lot of what was said, but seems like everyone started getting defensive-pretty much everyone who wrote more than once in this thread. Just sayin"...
  11. Yes the complaining needs to stop, but you don't want academics to suffer for it. This sounds like a great plan!
  12. You could use with a 6 y.o, easily. It just depends on what you plan to accomplish. Rosetta Stone is an immersion method, but will be a lot more than a 6 y.o. would need for the price. But, it is, in my opinion, a great way to go for language. We use it for German. My girls are 11, 10, & 7. We've only used it for a couple of months. I speak German & Spanish. We do like it. I also think that for the younger set, Power Glide might be equally as good and more fun. If you TWTM, info is in the book. Just my op. Hope it helps a little.
  13. Just wanted to encourage a little here: You are a real school!!! We, homeschoolers, are not imaginary or non-existant. Our education takes place primarily, or at least based out of our home. But, it's real education. Probably more "real" than an institution can provide. Just sayin'. I mean this in the kindest way :):grouphug:
  14. You could just continue with the Plaid Phonics, moving to Level B. If he's having trouble with phonics, that would be simple, but cover it. I tried C last year with my then 1st grader-too hard for her. But B was good and we are finishing it this year (2nd).
  15. Thank you. Yes, I have now watched the videos. I am using the tracker on a very basic level. Looking forward to learning more. :001_smile:
  16. I really think that FLL and WWE are similar and if you don't like one, you won't like the other. I also think they are some of the best you can use with a younger hs child. If you go with any workbook style, there's usually a lot more writing. You don't get fluff and they do learn grammar and thought organization for writing. To each his own, however. They are so easy to use and implement. You can always spice them up...adding the optionals can be fun. My point is, if you don't like one, don't see how you like the other. Very similar in my opinion. :001_huh::grouphug:
  17. I've read what I could find in the forum on skedtracker. So glad to find others using. I have started with the basics. Now I need to get a grip on the activities. Quick question(s)-I will watch the video today, but are activities the lessons or assignments for the day? I see one can merge am excel file. Would that be a better way to plan lessons and then merge to skedtracker? I am still trying to get a grasp on everything I can use it to for. Thanks!!!!
  18. Spelling Grammar Literature Writing Math History (also covers Geography) Latin German Pre-Logic Science Guitar Bible Art Music Drama Pretty similar to many others.
  19. We do a little more than one list a week. They do a page or two 4 days a week. In the end it may end up being a list a week, but I try to keep it moving a little faster than that to stay with TWTM schedule for this curr. I think those extra pages would be good if you need them for extra practice. We haven't needed them at all (we range from B-G right now), so I don't add the extra work in.
  20. Guess you don't need any more advice on this one. I agree with everyone. You're not paranoid. Don't even 2nd guess yourself on that one. Even if your wrong-it's reasonable to double check, make sure, do what you can to keep your family safe. And hopefully it is all nothing!
  21. Sounds like fun, I love the ideas and angles that different curr. bring. DON'T DO IT!!! Get a game plan. Decide exactly what you want your kids to learn and why. Find out which curr. will best meet those needs. The unique learning goals and need of your family. I repeat-DON'T DO IT!!! You're having so much fun, you might ruin it with WAY too much to wade through!
  22. Creationist: Yes Young Earth: No Literal 7 days: From what I see in Hebrew, Yes. All done by the Creator: Yes (so much harder to believe that it just evolved or exploded into being) Christian Science Curr.: Heck, no. Can't agree with the absolutes given by many Christians concerning science. Isn't that what we can't agree with in the theory of evolution? That the theory has been made fact without scientific proof?
  23. I haven't used teacher book for A. Nor have I even seen it. I didn't buy teacher book until level F. Only as a time saver. I can't see any reason to use it before E or F. Just my 2 cents :001_smile:
