  1. Mine would think, "8 is almost 10, so take 23 - 10 = 13 + 2 (since we had to add 2 to the 8 to make 10) = 15".
  2. I would open it for sure. I would keep in mind the context, but I would definitely open it.
  3. Not only do I not click on those ads, I don't even see them. I use adblocker (free add on to my browser) which blocks ads on all sites. Most of my friends use adblocker as well.
  4. Thank you for the free links. I'm glad you're enjoying Big Oven. I tried out several menu making programs before I finally settled on that one. :)
  5. This one has a couple weeks of free meal plans: http://www.100daysofrealfood.com/2011/04/04/free-%E2%80%9Creal-food%E2%80%9D-meal-plans/ The one thing that bothers me about fresh20 is that there are no samples and it doesn't say approximately how much the groceries come out to each week? I'm looking at the tiny bit they show of the sample shopping list and it looks pretty expensive. Maybe I'm just missing that information in my quick scan One thing that bothers me about emeals is that it also seems expensive. They try to keep it around $80-$100/week but that's for dinners only. My guess is that fresh20 is about the same. I was looking at services like these, and instead chose to join bigoven.com. I then scoured Big oven and the internet for recipes that my family enjoys (and that take about 30 minutes to prepare). I input them into bigoven and from there, I can then create meal plans (including breakfast and lunch), and it will then create a grocery list for me based on my meal plan.
  6. I wonder if she is resistant because it's not really a challenge? Maybe move up to the point where it becomes a challenge? Also, you could try having her read one Bob Book or a phonics reader with pictures after each lesson as a reward. Some kids just want to read books with pictures. :)
  7. We are now finishing up with Singapore 2b, and my son is very resistant to writing out any problems to figure them out. He wants to do them all in his head. He's very good at it, but not perfect. There are times when it just seems like it would be easier to write it out and add it up in a column. I see his eyes squinting all up as he's trying to hold all of the numbers in his head while he figures it out. Is it just my old fashioned math thinking that is wanting him to write out the more difficult problems? Singapore does teach adding and subtracting in columns as well and says to allow them to write it out if they need to. What I have been doing is letting him do it in his head and if it's incorrect, then have him write it in a column to do the correction. I don't know what's coming up in the future with this program to know if this is going to be a problem or if it's a good thing. Thanks all for reading!
  8. I think she could have said it in a more eloquant way, but the time you wanted didn't work for her. It doesn't matter if you think her reasons were important enough or not. It was important to her. I would have just said that I wasn't available at that time and asked if there was another time that worked for you. She tried to offer another time that worked for her and I didn't see any flexibility on your part. I think you both made mistakes in this exchange.
  9. I agree that they are pretty. They remind me of a mix between scrapbooking and notebooking. I also noticed that there were no lines, and my guy isn't ready to write with sharpies or markers or even pen yet. Also, this would cost me an absolute fortune in ink to print out.
  10. Baltimore Core Knowledge Lesson Plans can be very helpful for those wanting to follow the core knowledge standards. http://www.cstone.net/~bcp/BCPIntro2.htm We are doing all of the literature lessons and loving every minute of it. Luckily we have a well stocked library. I really liked the history lessons as well, but we just don't have time for them as we are sticking with The Story of the World for now. The music lessons are really fun too!

  12. Is the store usually crowded on the first day? Should I expect a line outside and craziness when it opens? Or is it pretty low key?
  13. Here's a printable coupon for $5 off $30! :) :) http://reg.e.staples.com/c/s/tagfrm/hBP9uK8B7SHGCB8kK3eNtN2uQZC/coupon.html?n=8170&email=kathy@howtoshopforfree.net&COUPON_1=39033&cm_lm=kathy@howtoshopforfree.net&cid=EM:CM:_BP9uK8B8kK3eBR&om_rid=kathy@howtoshopforfree.net
  14. Thank you for all of the suggestions! Are there any others? Thanks!
  15. This comment makes no sense to me. Why can't I talk about my child's abilities or accomplishments without it being a COMPETITION between your children or someone else's children? I'm talking about my child.

  17. Oh this sounds good! We will try it. I'm also glad to know that it isn't completely necessary to master. :)
  18. He keeps making the noise with his lips instead of his tongue. When he tries with his tongue, he says he can't do it. Does anyone have any tips to help with this? Thanks!
  19. Without prime, it can take 5 - 7 days to receive your items. They prioritize shipping those who pay more for quicker shipping.
  20. I have read several reports of this lately and it appears to be a scam. Someone will knock on the door and say they are a neighbor and they locked their keys in the house and his wife was in an accident and will you take him to the hospital and btw, he needs $60 for the locksmith and will pay you back as soon as he gets home from the hospital that night, etc. I guess it's an easy scam to take advantage of since people don't know their neighbors anymore.
  21. Thank you all so much for the replies. They have given me some new directions. We do use the SOTW activity guide with narration questions (we do all of these orally), and I have used other open ended questions similar to those listed in a previous post. We are toward the end of WWE I. He says he is trying his best, but it just feels like more of a refusal or a discipline issue. However, he only does this with narration. So maybe it is more of a developmental hurdle that he hasn't yet passed. He will do copywork and dictation with no problems. If we are sitting on the couch, he will narrate (not great, but he will at least try). However if we're sitting at the school table and he knows I'm going to write what he says for him to copy, he just freezes. Thank you all again for the wonderful replies and support.
  22. I like the illustration idea, although that can take quite some time too. I ask him to narrate about three times a week. The rest of the time I do copywork or dictation. Also, when he narrates, I write down what he says and then he copies it, and sometimes I will dictate back to him (dictation is new within the last month). Giving him the reward of doing it less for doing it very well when we do it, may be a good option. Honestly, all I want him to do is to try. I don't expect it to be perfect. I just want some effort. Thanks for the reply!
