  1. We're reading A Door in the Wall for ds8, A Dolphin Treasure for ds6, and lots of Pete the Cat books for ds4.
  2. I had a pat down in July and it wasn't a big deal at all. The lady was very respectful and made sure I knew exactly what she was going to do. It wasn't invasive.
  3. Sub'ing. I'm always looking for good fantasy for ds8.
  4. I haven't read past the first page... In 6th grade, my parents took us out of school to go to Australia for 3 weeks. It was amazing for our lower middle class family to do that and I'm so glad they did. They felt that once I got to 7th grade, I couldn't miss any more school for vacation. I would do that in a heartbeat for my dc. However, we have such strict truancy laws here that it wouldn't be possible and even being gone for a week means no sick days or they will incur penalties. Evidently, Dr. notes don't mean squat even though they are required for illnesses. It is one of the biggest complaints I hear from my ps school friends. My best friend was one tardy away from a monetary punishment two years ago. Now my sis (who lives in another state) is pulling her K'er out of private school for a couple of days this fall to visit us. The school doesn't care and is going to send any work with her. I doubt a K'er will have much, but they appreciated the attitude of the school staff.
  5. This is where MFW packages and SL P3/4 (and lots of other books) have come I handy for us. Since my newly 4 yr old is one of the first up, I can read to him snuggled on the couch or in my bed first thing. It really makes him feel loved. That kid will listen to Pete the Cat a hundred times in a row and likes it when he can sing the songs all by himself (no brothers to horn in on his fun). I also can find a few minutes here or there during the school day to play with one of the toys from MFW with him. He calls them his school toys and likes to have my full attention for a few minutes. There's no set up for me and very little cleanup. In fact, my 1yr old loves to get in on the action. I task the 4yo with teaching his brother something and he feels like a big kid. The 1yo can make an absolute mess of our school toy tub, but it cleans up in 5 min (a must for me). He also has the option of having stories by himself at night. Last night, we all piled into his bed for storyline making him feel important. I think doing these things with him allows us some one-on-one time that I can handle during the school day. I don't think of it as preschool. I don't care if he learns anything or makes a big mess. I feel like he's more included in our day now and has more of me besides discipline.
  6. Earlier Oddyseys aren't as reliable as newer ones. We bought an '02 in 2008 for a good price knowing that and haven't had any trouble with it at all. I don't know much about timing belts, but they're known for spotty transmissions. Thankfully, we passed the 100,000 mile mark years ago and no problem. The newer ones get very high reliability ratings. Toyota Siennas are probably the best but the Hondas are rated a close 2nd last I looked.
  7. Use Cuisenaire Rods. Sonlight even sells them if that is your preferred seller (I bought mine from SL). They are on a cm scale like the base ten set (which I use later alongside C-Rods) and have 1-10 pieces.
  8. Singapore Math AoPS SWR any Latin...I had no idea people were still learning it.
  9. Can you look through your posting history to figure it out?
  10. And JSYK, this was on the way home. No one questioned his age on the way there. We had to pay for the VERY expensive ticket or they wouldn't have let us get on the plane. I would hate for you to be out all of that money over some bad information. DianeW is right, it is the ticket agent that matters. I'm pretty sure that it is a federal law and not up to individual airlines.
  11. We traveled when ds4 was 23 months and had to buy a ticket because we didn't bring his birth certificate. They said that they couldn't take our word for it since he was so close to 2yo. Thankfully, they refunded the money when we faxed them a copy of the birth certificate. I'd definitely call to make sure since I don't think the law has changed to include 2yos as a lap child.
  12. CWP= Challenging Word Problems IP= Intensive Practice I really don't think SM is complete without CWP. I didn't use IP until this year. Ds8 didn't really need it and still doesn't. He masters the concepts easily. It does work well for ds6, however. He is very bright (likely gifted), but not a natural math guy. He has no problem mastering the concepts, but I feel the need to slow him down and give him more practice. The IPs have been perfect for that. They offer him some challenge along with the practice. I also use Miquon (among other things since we are a heavy STEM family) and C Rods. C-Rods are the most used manipulative at my house and often used with SM. My boys call Miquon "fun math."
  13. Sounds like where I grew up. I would do it if my dc were little and plan to move before high school. We had a very high teen pregnancy rate because there wasn't much else to do. Dh and I are raising our dc in a city and I miss a lot about living in a rural area.
  14. I use the HIG and CWP. We are also incorporating the IP this year.
  15. I agree with the PPs. Ds8 started Apples last year alongside SM 4A and loved it. There's a lot of other info in there besides math.
  16. I found this...https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q=cache:q3i8JGt7nMIJ:communityservice.wustl.edu/Documents/Height%2520and%2520Weight%2520Requirements.pdf+red+cross+weight+requirements+chart&hl=en&gl=us&pid=bl&srcid=ADGEESjd3qO5wlz68adgAre3NnFVnPVm7Fa3YPqC-P3yh6QuujZGZQKBhs780niN03SIrw6tb4J2M_Jx0AzYgpZy1d81kUy_8-jOnEkMCpyeZG73BQlsCv48zsJa6qHws2caUGEqfXp3&sig=AHIEtbQh2zfdpY50_8__isYvv8jma-UYAw&pli=1 According to that, I wouldn't have been eligible :001_huh:
  17. I remember it being 110 when I gave in high school and was under 18. I wonder if it's changed.
  18. We've used the US edition since the beginning and aren't switching. The extra cost just isn't worth it to me. They've worked great for years.
  19. These look great! I also like to use shorter ones for young kids. It makes less for their little hands to control. I'm gonna have to make a stop at Staples this weekend...I think it's our tax free weekend. Thanks for the tip.
  20. I happily changed my name. I was in the military at the time so it was a bit of a pain but temporary. My sister kept our maiden name and no one threw a fit. I don't even think it was a blip on anyone's radar. She is disappointed that we are the end of our line (my dad was the only one from that union and had two daughters) so she wants to keep the name going a bit longer. I wonder if she'll change it as her girls go to school. My oldest two are already a little confused by her last name, but we don't make a big deal of it. It isn't important enough to me to have a discussion with such young children about their dear aunt changing her name. Her daughters have a double last name but it gets shortened automatically to her husband's name. I'll be interested to see what happens as they have their first boy this year. My sis may insist he is given our maiden name...it would be a fight since Dbil is also the last of his line and this will be the only son.
  21. Ds6 was like this. It led to him teaching himself to read before he was 3. I didn't do anything differently with him and still don't. Once he got to Kindy, I placed him into a higher reader package.
  22. Still praying here too. I hope your appointment has good news in store. :grouphug:
