  1. If you bought them to use as a supplement, then do that. It sounds like you have a good thing going. I'd say yes, a 6th grader using the lit guides would read the books himself. But don't let the curriculum force you to do something you weren't planning on/aren't excited about.
  2. I also use FLL, so I omit the more grammatical copywork suggestions in WWE, which I think makes it MUCH easier to use WWE across the curriculum. My current plan is to do FLL (ONLY the grammar lessons) 2 days a week with copywork from the lesson, then WWE 2 different days a week using SOTW for narrations, copywork/dictation. I too have considered using lit instead. I'm actually giving MP's lit guides a try this year (though I only got the 2nd grade answer key, which has the answers for all the workbooks so I only spent $13 on it). I was planning to do all that orally, so it'd be a lot like using the questions in the SOTW AG (which I do have) to aid in narrations. So that would be a good possible alternative. One reason I DON'T care for the WWE workbooks is because it takes some great stories and only does excerpts of them. So, I looked at ELTL instead, but that had too much integration with subjects we do differently (poetry, grammar) that it would take too much tweeking.... So I'm back to tweeking WWE. ;) You made a very good point about dictation and spelling. I'll have to make sure to simplify some of the sentences.
  3. I think this would work well. Maybe read the whole section, have DD narrate, then reread a smaller selection for DS to narrate/do the most important part.
  4. I'll try to listen to that podcast on narration, thanks!
  5. Wow, I turn my head for one day and y'all leave some massive replies! Thank you! Getting some coffee to help process... ;)
  6. I discovered FiveJ's planner recently. It's in black and white for low cost printing and it's FREE! http://fivejs.com/free-printable-homeschool-planner-over-200-pages/ That said, I usually end up writing all my big picture thoughts and yearly planning on regular paper. I also keep a One Note notebook for both ideas and detailed plans. It's quite the paper-digital hybrid.
  7. I babysat starting around age 12. In that time I also worked under the table at a small preschool during their summer sessions. I got my first official job at 16 at McDonalds. It paid pretty well since it was in a tourist locale.
  8. For DS's 1st grade year, I used the WWE guide in conjunction with SOTW vol 1 for narrations. It was simple to read a section of history, then ask for a 2-3 sentence narration on something he remembered. Now, for Year 2 in the WWE guide, instead of asking something you remembered, it says to ask for the most important point of the passage. Now, I do not expect DS7 (or anyone really) to read a whole section of SOTW and then be able to pick out THE most important thing in the passage - a whole section covers a multitude of topics! So, for those who use WWE with other sources, how should I approach this? Just pick a particular paragraph, read it by itself, have child narrate, then continue with the rest of the section? Would it be better to use a difference source completely? I'm also considering ditching the WWE/SOTW combo all together. DD4 is begging to do her own narrations, and I don't know how to have both children narrate from the same passage - so I'd likely some formal narration of SOTW for both. But I know that writing across the curriculum is ideal, so I was avoiding using the WWE workbooks if possible... plus its less for me to read aloud if I combine it! Ideas, thoughts, comments? Thank you!
  9. I don't get the line about the RE programs. As I understand from your description, the only part the church plays is y'all attending Mass there, yes? What does that have to do with RE? Is the 12:15 Mass a regularly scheduled Mass, or would it be special for your group? You're just going to Mass, so all the "arrangements with the parish office" seem way too involved. Are you just wanting to submit an ad/announcement for the bulletin? Or are you looking for this to be a church ministry? Those are completely different things to me.
  10. $20.14 for me! And so I bought History of the Medieval World with it. :D And the Audible companion for it was less than $6. :D
  11. Yes, visiting family 2 hours away, BBQing, fireworks, sleep, then back home.
  12. Each section is about 3-5 minutes, so if a chapter is 2 sections, it'd be 6-10 minutes. Eta, for vol 1 at least
  13. Every kindle account has an email address you can send PDFs to to upload them to your kindle. Not sure how to find that address though...
  14. I use that Instructor Text in conjunction with SOTW. I ignore the grammar suggestions because we get that through FLL. So for this last year (year 1), I'd read a section from SOTW, ask the review questions in the SOTW Activity Guide, write down his narration, and his copywork was either something from the SOTW section we just read, or a sentence that reinforced the FLL for that day. For year 2, the major changes are asking, what's the most important thing in the passage (vs simply, what do you remember) and adding dictation based on his narration once a week. I will continue to use FLL and reinforce that as a part of the copywork. Along those same lines, I also omit all the non-grammar lessons in FLL to reduce overlap. So out of 100 lessons, we'll do about 70 next year.
  15. As an adult, I understand the humor, but I myself would not appreciate it. I'm a very literal person, so if I say I hate something, I would be super annoyed finding 40 of them on my lawn. I'm also not a fan of practical jokes or April Fools Day, but many people are. As long as everyone enjoys it, it's okay. I would not be surprised to find that children who were not a part of that sort of humor "from the beginning" might not understand it.
  16. For secular K-6: Score for Beast Academy: 6 Score for Math Mammoth: 5 Score for Math U See: 3 Score for Mathematical Reasoning: 3 Score for Miquon: 3 Score for RightStart: 3 Score for Saxon: 8 Score for Shiller: 6 Score for Singapore: 9 Score for Teaching Textbooks: 3 We use Math Mammoth. But I'm comfortable with math myself, so I could probably make anything work. I'm surprised I didn't get a higher score for MM. Oh well.
  17. We just bought a Yukon XL, lowest trim style. We did our search exclusively online at cars.com and autotrader.com. When we found one we were interested enough in, we went and saw it. We went to the dealer and said, We saw X car online, do you still have it in stock? Some we called before hand. Good luck!
  18. Strider riders here! Got one for DS7 when he was 2.5. We've passed it down through our kids, and now DS2 is using it (so the 3rd kid). We need to get new tires for it, especially since we plan on #4 using it too. But the tires have gotten a lot of road and off-road use, so I'm not surprised they need replacing. Also, our older two have learned to ride a pedal bike without training wheels at about age 4. Love our Strider! ETA, A common complaint of the Strider is that it doesn't have footrests. The thing is... it DOES! The bars that extend from the mainframe to the rear wheel have a non-skid finish on the top to place your feet. The placement works well because it keeps the child leaning forward even when resting his feet, like you would on a pedal bike.
  19. Have you read TWTM chapters on writing? WWS is the TWTM version of writing all spelling out. If you need something more flexible before doing a full out WWS book, TWTM will have guidelines to follow. If he's beyond the single line outlines, try venturing into two-lines. This is in TWTM 2nd editon that I have. I bet the 1st has it too - don't know about the 3rd ed.
  20. Retrouvaille is for those on the brink of divorce/separation. Marriage Encounter is a better fit for a couple wanting to reconnect.
  21. This is what we did for my last 3, born in 2011, 2013, and 2016.
