  1. We're up, crazy week but still got a little schooling done.
  2. Keep what fits on the fridge and bulletin board- change it daily or weekly. Then throw the rest out or mail it to Grandma or another relative that would like something pretty on their fridge! I do take pictures of my kids work sometimes before throwing it out...
  3. Our day is filled with appointments tomorrow so we finished up our week today. Our report
  4. We did use the blue dawn, so the glycerin soap in the first batch and tiny amount of glycerin in the second batch were the problem. I'm writing this one off for now-thanks for all the help. I'm writing down that recipe and if I ever come across glycerin we'll make it then! Thanks!
  5. Wow thanks everyone! I'm off to see what our library has out of the recommendations before I hit Amazon!
  6. We're starting to study our bodies for science next week. I hope to spend 4 to 6 weeks studying general anatomy, nutrition, senses, etc. Can you give me recommendations on your favorite books (spine type) and activity/science experiment books. Thanks!
  7. I love GTG. I'm doing it with a Ker, you can check my blog to see what we've done so far. I've felt somewhat limited in literature choices as many are way above her head, we also aren't doing much mapping work so I think this program could also be great for a 2nd grader.
  8. I need a recipe to make giant bubbles! The recipe in our science book is not working. It calls for 2 cups of detergent, 2 teaspoons of corn syrup, and 2 cups of glycerin to 4 cups of water. First I could not find glycerin anywhere in the city-it either come in small meltable glycerin soaps at the craft store or small suppositories at the drug store. I tried to melt 2 cups of glycerin soap for the recipe, but the bubbles just popped. Then I tried just squeezing a few of the glycerin supositories into the solution-I'd have to buy boxes and boxes to get anywhere near 2 cups! It was a little better, but still the majority of the bubbles still poppedand there were no huge bubbles at all. When I was little we made a bubble solution that made huge monster bubbles-anyone know a good recipe? Thanks!
  9. Ours is finally up! Off to read about everyone's weeks!
  10. Starfall.com has a new board game you can buy. My children love it! I love that I can use two stacks of playing cards. The 3 year old can work on simple letter recognition while the 5 year old works on reading simple words.
  11. I forgot about art! We also love arts and crafts time. If you have a good library nearby get titles by MaryAnn Kohl she has some great art and craft idea books for this age level! I was getting ready to buy the new Artistic Pursuits early childhood ed. book, but just couldn't justify spending the money-then I thought to search for preschool and early elementary arts and crafts at the library. I literally came home with 20 books to get some ideas from!
  12. Here's a great site for lots of cut and paste crafts http://www.dltk-kids.com/
  13. We're doing K this year. I second the Galloping the Globe curriculum. It's so easy to make hands on by searching the library and internet for crafts and recipes. We're also using Discovering Great Artistis and doing artists in the country we are studying for GTG. Miriam always wants to know what day we are being "artists" each week. Hands down the favorite hands on activities have been our twice weekly science lessons. Right now we're doing matter, you can check my blog to see some of the fun experiments we have done in the last 2 weeks. I found all the experiments in books from the library.
  14. Using letter stamps...what a wonderful idea! My almost middle dd is ready to learn letter sounds, but I've been holding off on ETC since her motor skills are not there yet-stamps would be perfect for her. Thanks!!
  15. Review has probably been my problem my whole life! I have so much trouble remembering Bible verses myself. I love to put the front of one verse with the end of another; and my refrence memory is horrid as well. Of the verses we've already learned this year my dd knows them so much better than I do! I'm going to implement the suggestion on the Charlotte Mason site; it should help me as much as my dd! http://simplycharlottemason.com/timesavers/memorysys/
  16. Thank you very much! Between the Lulu document (which has so much more than verses that we can work on!) and the Simply Charlotte Mason list I should be able to put together memory work for the whole year! Thanks again!
  17. That's the thing though- I want varied. Verses about Jesus, the Psalms, verses about attitude and behavior...etc. I have the ABC verse book-but we've gone through most of those.
  18. My kindergartener is learning a Bible verse a week, but I'm having trouble finding Bible verses for her to memorize. I'm stressing way too much on something that should be relatively simple! Can anyone recommend a list or book of verses to memorize by age or grade level? I am not interested in cutesy songs, just straight forward verse memorizing. Thanks!
  19. We're in week 3 of Kindergarten- so far most things are wonderful, though not all are going as I had planned! I love ETC but dd was learning to read faster than she could keep up with the ETC pages due to all the required writing. She is capable of learning each concept in one sitting, but the lessons take her 2 to 3 days to complete. She was getting frustrated at the slow pace so we added OPGTR, we can move through the lessons at her own pace and still use ETC as enrichment. Again, love Singapore Earlybird and so does dd, but she is flying through it at lightening speed. Math seems to be her favorite subject, she begs to do more math but I don't want her spending an hour a day in a workbook- so we've ordered RightStart. It hasn't arrived yet, but I think it will satisfy her desire to do math for an extended period of time and she can still do her Singapore workbooks as well. DD is loving Come Look With Me art books way more than I expected and we are both enjoying Discovering Great Artists! Another surprise is A Reason for Writing- when this book arrived I put it away to use with younger dd when she turns 4, it just seemed too easy for the older dd. Then I noticed dd forming several letters incorrectly during ETC and pulled out the handwriting book. She loves it and asks to do a page every day. I notice that she always forms the letters she's worked on correctly even though there is only one page of work per letter. She also loves the "reward" of coloring the animal after completing the handwriting assignment. Galloping the Globe is a huge hit!
  20. We are doing "two year kindergarten" like many others who posted. Right now it's K4, next year it will be K5. My daughter meets the date to go to school this year (here it's Oct 15th and she was born early in Oct). But I would never dream of putting her in public school as a 4 year old, though academically she is more than ready for K, emotionally/socially she would not be ready for the public school setting. If she went to public school she would not be starting until next year, for that reason we're calling her K4. She's doing all K level work and will do first grade work next year though she'll be considered a Ker. I may hold off history until her actual first grade year and do an overview or more Galloping the Globe next year because she is a sensitive child and I think delaying history may work better for her.
