  1. And this is what happens when you don't pay attention to where you are posting....
  2. I don't know how I could homeschool, but I would be open to hearing how anyone else pulls it off with elementary-school age kids! I told them that we could certainly homeschool again when they were old enough to be left on their own... So I am certainly open to the idea!
  3. Ok, here's a quick recap... I became a single mom this year. One week ago, I packed up the kids and I and moved us to FL. They had to go to school, I can't possibly homeschool them now. (8 &10)... Yesterday was their first day. The 10yr old had a good day. The 8yr old was miserable. I mean really, really miserable. Didn't eat lunch, didn't eat breakfast kind of miserable. Naturally, it breaks my heart.... Someone please tell me that we are going to survive...
  4. I go to school online, and haven't dealt with anything like this. Sure, there have been some minor discrepancies....but it has always gone pretty well. Sorry you're having to deal with this.
  5. I'm from Sarasota, and would certainly recommend it- no matter what time of the year. Some locals start getting out of the water in Oct, but as someone has already pointed out the weather does vary. The beaches are spectacular and the kids might just enjoy hanging out there all the time.... Mote Marine aquarium will satisfy the manatee/dolphin req. You can easily day trip to Tampa for Busch Gardens/ MOSI (museum of science/industry) Sarasota has Myakka State Park....good for alligator sighting/canoeing/bird watching. There is also the Ringling museum if your kids would like that or GWiz science museum. Hmmm, if there are other things your family is interested in I can help point you in the right direction.
  6. I live here, and would be happy to help you find things to do/see etc. Let me know what you are interested in, and I'll see what I can do.
  7. try savannah unlimited homeschool network. They did have a yahoo group, but I think they just switched it over to suhn.weebly.com
  8. I'm from Sarasota, so Siesta is my beach! I might give you a biased opinion. ;) What time of year are you going? (season is basically thanksgiving to easter)= higher prices. Check out vrbo for some decent deals. There's no shortage of rental places. So many things to do and cool places to eat. I'd be happy to help you out, can you tell me what you guys like to do?
  9. I still have my reader from when I was in 2nd grade. Somewhere along the way, I picked up another for my kids to read. They like the stories...but we've never done the "program" so to speak. Sorry, I'm not much help. We've read the books, but haven't done the program.
  10. I go online at Penn State. I've been happy with them.
  11. :grouphug: I am only at the beginning of my divorce "adventure"...and am not looking forward to any more tough times....You are lucky to have found someone new. I hope peace finds you in this time.
  12. Hmm, as a very new single parent...I haven't come across too many issues. But I would like to mention that I don't have cooties, my life/struggles might be different from those of you who aren't single parents, but that it still really is all about the kids. Whether we are single or not, I think we all have that in common. We're homeschooling for our kids. It is hard, (for me too) to escape the awkwardness/uncomfortable-ness of being the "left" spouse. You might seem awkward....I might seem awkward....but I'm still willing to talk about it. It doesn't define me. And I don't want to be defined by it by you (the general you). Does that make any sense?
  13. My understanding is that you can move any piece anywhere. ~At least that's how we play!
