  1. I like Tom Clancy and Robert Ludlum, and I like Lee Child's Jack Reacher books. Not as technical as Clancy though.
  2. The exchange students we had from Spain were quite street/city savvy. I think since your son has been using mass transit for a couple of years I think it would be fun for them both (and I am very cautious as well). I think I would be more comfortable with them taking the bus than driving to Seattle (IF it were legal in WA to drive at 16 with someone other than a sibling - thank goodness it's not).
  3. My daughter's cc classified Psychology as a Social Science along with her Western Civ class and Medicine Across Cultures class. Generically I have it under Electives.
  4. With one of our students, I prepared a Thanksgiving dinner (the hottest week of the year  ) and invited our friends whose kids were teens too. We dressed nicely, put together a large table with all the decorations and food, and discussed what we were thankful for. Except for the hot weather it was loads of fun - but then again Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays and I don't mind cooking for that one.
  5. Did you see this free resource from the University of Colorado. Most of these simulations have lesson plans to go with them. Although I personally didn't use these for topics in motion, etc, I did use these successfully with Electricity, Magnets and Circuits. It was helpful for my dc to "see" the electrons. https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulations/category/physics
  6. We've had two Basque students stay with us at different times. They had different personalities, but I think it worked out best when the student shared a room with my dc (obviously same sex).
  7. :glare: I shouldn't read these types of threads; I was just planning to read a couple of Lee Child- Jack Reacher books :D . Nah, I was actually going to try and read a few biographies (I have only read one or two in my life): Julia Child, Ronald Regan, and Richard Feynman. Additionally, I hope to read The Prince and sprinkle in some Jack Reacher books.
  8. My son read both; the Iliad first. If he had to read only one it would be the Iliad. My daughter read just The Odyssey- that was probably more up her alley anyway.
  9. Thanks for asking this. I needed to know as well.
  10. FloridaLisa, I don't know why I got choked up with your post... Boy am I emotional... Thanks for the encouragement.
  11. Thanks for the "hugs" and "congrats". I am already bummin' that I have no "need" to research next year's curriculum on this board...
  12. My son wanted to DE for 11th & 12th grade. Here in WA you can go full-time for “free†(we pay fees & books). Our local cc has a program called ORCA : http://www.everettcc.edu/node/18571 “The Ocean Research College Academy (ORCA) is an early college high school academy, one of the first in Washington State. ORCA is the only early college in the nation that uses the local marine environment as the unifying theme to integrate the core academic disciplines. Funded initially by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, ORCA seeks to provide opportunities for all students to engage in active inquiry and in-depth study in a supportive environment.†It’s fairly competitive and my son was accepted! We are all so thrilled. This boy loves the water (loves rowing, owns his own kayak, etc.) and exploring, so we thought it would be perfect for him and are glad they thought so too. I think this program will stretch & invigorate him. But, as Creekland posted in an earlier thread, “…it’s over-just like thatâ€. My heart is heavy. I know he will still be here and most likely I will continue to help him occasionally with school, but my career as a homeshooling mom is done. I am going to miss it like crazy. I loved researching curriculum, writing and implementing lesson plans, and working with my kids - almost everything about homeschooling. I feel terribly blessed to have been able to do this. I get teary–eyed and choked-up when I think about it. At this time I wish I had more dc. Well, I am sure God has something else for me to focus my energy on. I am looking forward to less of a mess (yah right).
  13. There's "Ran" - Japanese King Lear, Das Boot...gosh I have seen a lot of good German movies and am drawing a blank.
  14. A Book of Five Rings by Miyamoto Musashi and translated by Victor Harris is a good one. The translators introduction provides a history of Japan during Musashi's (a famous samurai), Kendo and Zen, and a bit of a biography. Musashi's text is about his sword fighting philosophy and strategy. It is a short and interesting book.
  15. Whew, I am kind of glad I'm an introvert. I have had no desire to join any homeschool group (not including WHO). I am grateful I could pick out what curriculum I thought would work for my kids and not necessarily a worldview. I am a Christian and would go to the convention to look at the curriculum and learn new perspectives (I just wouldn't pay their price or travel 3000 miles :tongue_smilie: ).
  16. We have never been a part of a co-op so I don't know the rules, but can you have him do one or two "fun" classes and ask whoever is in charge if you might be able to contribute by doing some work from home. Something like paperwork...? Is there a physical reason he doesn't want to do sports? My son's whole demeanor is more positive when he gets a hard workout in.
  17. I know when my kids have gone to Mexico on a mission trip (just last year) they needed a notarized permission slip to travel with adult chaperons.
  18. Did you look at the pinned Biology thread at the top of this forum. I can't help with either.
  19. One of my favorite movies is "The Red Violin". It is rated R for a s?x/n*dity scene (that's all I remember at least). Just an uber cool story. A couple of favorite foreign movies for me is "Raise the Red Lantern" (PG) but depressing (as it seems most Chinese movies are) and "Like Water for Chocolate" (R-probably for s?x scenes). I am not a baseball fan per se but "The Perfect Game" was a great movie.
  20. What are y'all doing talking about movies for the summer?! You must not be from the PNW where summer is THE season to be outdoors. ;-) But, I do love to watch movies so you are drawing me in... I did see Odd Thomas just a couple of days ago. I really enjoyed it; it was definitely set up to have a sequel or become a TV series (I thought). Anyone see "Mom's Night Out"?
