  1. Amy, I missed you too! I thought I had forgot which month the vacation is in.
  2. My likes aren't always working, I am not near our limit so not sure what's wrong. I still can't multiquote Noseinabook your kids are adorable! Angel, have a great holiday at the Wizarding World.....I love the first four HP books pretty equally but the first is the best imo. Everything is new, every single bit of it. The others just improve what we already know. Haven't had time to read. I might be able to later today in the car on our way to the next round of tests. High possibility of road closure again, we are just going to a hotel for the night.
  3. I hope you get them! I just want them. I will admit to hoping that a good score might really help both kids on the SAT subject tests on Saturday. They are both showing signs of allergy problems or a cold. Not sure which yet. So may not be at their best this weekend. Positive reinforcement would be great about now. Dh is now charge of looking....he plans not to tell that the scores are there if either child will be disappointed.
  4. Welcome! I am not sure what ages you are looking for. We used a combination of library books and materials from the US when they were younger for geography. More recently we used the Oxford Press key stage 3 geography books.
  5. I finished Bone Cold by Erica Spindler during the night, insomnia is back. It was a good suspense novel but the ending was irritating. It was one of those really.....that was the best you can do endings. Disappointing but I will say I figured it out but could not believe I was right.https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/418619.Bone_Cold
  6. Agree with Laura about driving rules and understanding roundabouts. Knowing the basics is very important. Dh normally drives and I navigate when we leave our familiar area. It takes two of us to keep track of speed signs when on small roads, sat nav is not always up to date. The M1 always has roadworks, we live by it and are very used to them because they are constant. Just wanted to add that there are several great things to see by train also. I got a bit carried away with my favorites on the drive up the M1. Bath is lovely and very train accessible. London is several days depending on interests. Oxford works well also. The train up to Scotland could also include a stop in Lincoln fairly easily. Beautiful Cathedral, Castle, roman ruins, and some interesting shops. Lincoln is a day, not days. York could be days. I have friends who drive to York and take the train to Whitby...steam train, I think. They love it. Durham could be another stop by train northwards.
  7. Congratulations!!! I will continue to pray for Caden and your whole family. Room air at 28 weeks is amazing. :grouphug: Ds had the blood sugar issues, was really glad when they went away. Medicmom, you did great work!
  8. My first questions when I read this are where are they flying into and how much of your time will be in Scotland? Driving will mean that you can see more of the country outside of London in general but if you really don't want to trains will work. Make sure that you buy a family rail card. August is when all the schools are out so lots of children's activities at historic sites. Becoming a member of English Heritage or National Trust (Scotland has a version of this that is reciprocal) will keep costs down. London activities have had a lot of posts in recent months so i will skip. Holiday house rental are money saving but tie you to an area for a week. Premier Inns work great for a family of 4, Tons of great historic homes and sites on the drive up the M1 to Scotland. Favorites include (if you drive): Hardwick Hall.....Malfoy Manor in HP films Bolsover Castle....the view, and some great wall paintings. Always has good activities. Brodsworth Hall....a historic house in decline. purposely not renovated, restored to show how the family lost their funds. York.....train museum, walled city, cathedral, museum, Yorvik, list goes on.... Whitby (detour but great) .....lovely coastal village, Bram Stoker ties, good fossel hunting in the area Fountains Abbey...spectacular site, world heritage site, Locted by Ripon which is lovely. Richmond....Good town and Castle Well that's a start. Also driving through Bronte Country and James Herriot areas. I could go on and on. Lots to see and do.
  9. I have read that the math section gets harder scorewise if the kids go on to take Calculus before they finish their testing. Scores drop on math because they forget the basics. I haven't seen the actual scores but I did notice that ds seemed to have a bit of a lag on vocabulary compared to his sister. Not sure if time will help that one or not, but his English scores are lower than the rest. I am putting that down to age and would expect improvement in that section over time. DS stopping now would depend on if his English score is high enough for all the schools on his list and his math/science sections being great. If he was going someplace where writing wasn't required we would consider not testing again. Of course if the English isn't high enough he is going back in June since his sister is already testing for the writing section.
  10. We are just looking at British schools. Requirements are very specific at each school. Some have a minimum score for each section, others have a composite score requirement. We are planning to stop a couple points over requirements.
  11. I can't tell you how helpful knowing that the writing shows separately from the English is. Thank you! More research indicates that there is a chance more scores could be released tomorrow then every Wednesday and Friday. We need writing but didn't do it this time. Plan is June with writing. Wanted a clean exam with a good score (hopefully) for dd's self confidence. She is very nervous about the essay question, not about the actual writing of said essay. The samples she keeps getting are things that she knows nothing about .....she is afraid she freeze so badly that she won't have time to make something up. Ds is a practice run, theoretically if high enough won't test again but he wants the same school his sister does so he will most likely take it again in the future. If all sections are high enough for admission now he will wait a year or two for writing.
  12. We checked, no scores. :( I hope there is still a chance that we will get them today. They are doing SAT subject exams this weekend. ETA. Per website all of today's scores have been released. Next release is Friday morning.
  13. We are just hoping to know today. What time do scores usually appear in the accounts?
  14. Robin, I know you are fine but if you could check in from home tonight that would be great. ;) I just like excitement in my books not real life!
  15. As some of you already know the Cat in the Stacks mystery series is one of my favourites in the cozy genre. Well written with interesting characters, a really cool cat, and the endings actually truly make sense. You actually know the murderer as a character and are usually a bit surprised that they did it, but can believe it. The author, Miranda James, has started a new series starring some reoccurring characters from his (author is a man in real life) cat in the stacks series. I just read the first one and really enjoyed it. Bless Her Dead Little Heart can stand alone.http://www.catinthestacks.com/southernladies.html
  16. I thought I would give you a bump. Not sure how helpful these thoughts are but.... A good friend was a Japanese major many years ago. She had a career in advertising before motherhood. Large international firm based in London. FWIW, She is also fluent in French and German. Another friend's ds loved this program http://www.hope.edu/academic/language/japanese/major.htmlat Hope College. No idea what he is doing now.
  17. I was thinking of Shukriyya earlier today. I took some photos of my garden flowers in bloom and they reminded me of her. I am sending her some positive vibes also. Kareni, I just put your German Courtney Milan on dd's kindle as a bit of a laugh. Waiting for her to notice. She is taking the German SAT subject exam in a few weeks and is trying to increase her reading speed a bit using Harry Potter books. This would definately be a change of pace. ;)
