  1. I think you are presuming too much. I agree with you more than you think - I also am glad that Bush is on his way out. I also don't like politicians. And I might be voting for a Libertarian or something else at the general election too. And if I was voting in the Democratic primary, I would vote for Obama. You can't make me not like you.;)
  2. But when I saw the tickets were $15 each, I told them they had to pay for their own tickets. My 12yo told me yesterday that she doesn't really need to go see it. I just think it's a horrible shame that they are charging 3x what it would normally cost us to go see a matinee. Sure it's cheaper than a concert, but you can watch her sing on a screen at home.
  3. The librarians are great - very helpful and friendly. They know we homeschool and we are some of their best customers so they take very good care of us. However, the book selection is awful. I have gone in with a whole page of books that I want and they'll only have a handful of them at best. They are great about using interlibrary loans or sometimes even ordering the books for the library, but nothing beats getting the books when you need them, not weeks or even months later.
  4. I really wish there was a true republican left in the top tier. I'd love to say more about that, but I would probably be breaking board rules if I did. I believe I'll be voting for Fred Thompson in our primary even though he's dropped out. Or perhaps Ron Paul - I think he is a very smart person and probably the best one left in the race.
  5. My dh always thinks I'm crazy but it's the closest I'm going to get to a new house these days. Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of ways we can arrange most of our rooms. Enjoy your new arrangements.
  6. I was waiting for some posts but didn't see any new ones yet. I was a little disappointed - no answers yet.
  7. The main reason that we started that early is that the kids asked me for it. My mom had picked up a copy of Typing Pal Jr. for next to nothing so I let them at it. They picked it up very quickly. We are a very computer oriented family - they get on the internet quite a bit and both prefer to type papers (and ds is only 9). They wanted to be better at typing so they practiced with the software. Are there advantages to starting that young? I don't know except that they have a few more years of practice and are very comfortable with it.
  8. and serve it with our favorite sides or make sandwiches until there isn't anymore left. If I have a lot of leftovers and we get tired of it plain, I will make ham salad sandwiches. Not a lot of help, I know.
  9. I chose the same one for the same reasons. And Belle is my second choice too.
  10. He is in 4th and it is his favorite thing to do for school. We had been using Rosetta Stone, but he prefers the ES. He's on the last unit for grades 3-4 and is excited about moving on to the ones for grades 5-6. On the other hand, my dd in 7th didn't really like the educación española for grades 6-8 with the same guy, so she's gone back to doing Rosetta Stone.
  11. We have always gotten good advice by dh asking his future coworkers/boss about what areas are better. We've also have found realtors that would share that information. Call the police dept and ask which areas have fewer incidences. If you go for a visit, driving around different areas can give you a good feel - if there are lots of kids outside playing, it probably is a safe area. I guess we've been very lucky in finding great neighborhoods.
  12. My dd is in 7th right now, but the panic attacks are already starting. This is so helpful. Thanks for taking the time to type it all up.
  13. I'm sitting here waiting for Lost - apparently they are replaying the season finale from last year with some extra stuff in it.
  14. And she isn't cheap. I think it was $65 the last time we went for dd, ds, and me to get cuts. She does a fabulous job on my curly hair so I'm afraid to try anyone else.
  15. When my dh first got his job, he had to travel a lot. The first few months, I had to have the tv on to go to sleep so I would be distracted and not hear all of the little creaks or noises from the cats. I got used to it to where it doesn't bother me much, but I still like to have the tv on.
  16. My dd got 1st place in the homeschool fair and went on to get 2nd in the regional fair with all of the other school kids. We learned a lot thanks to the wonderful man from the community college that runs it. Some key things he told us was that it has to be something you can measure. If you can't measure it, it isn't a good project. Everything must be documented. Originality is good. You must use the scientific process. All work should be neat and thorough, but it must be that of the child (which really made me laugh when we saw some of the school kids' projects at the regional fair). The interview seemed to be very important which is part of the reason why I think my child did well. During the interview, they really can see how involved the child was, how much she learned, and how well she thinks scientifically. Understanding the project and what each step meant is very important. Being able to answer questions about what went wrong or could have gone wrong is crucial as it helps to demonstrate their understanding of each step. That being said, it sounds like ya'll had a great project. It certainly sounds more thorough than the others. I'm sorry it didn't turn out better for you.
  17. And I have shelves full of unused books to show for it. I love them all which is why I can't seem to part with them. I just don't have the time or energy to use them all and well, it would be overkill for my poor kids if I tried. Someday I will begin to part with some of it. As my younger one outgrows things, I will part with them, used or not. Of course there are some exceptions like SOTW books which I will probably keep forever. The other day I even took home some school literature textbooks that the library was giving away. My ds likes reading the ones at his level just for fun and the jr and sr high ones actually had some decent selections in them. I will never use them for school though, I just know it.
  18. If it makes you feel any better, we did have lots of rain earlier in the day so it hasn't been a beautiful day, just warm.
  19. We were thinking of putting it towards a trip to Disney. However, our 19 yo tv seems to have died yesterday so perhaps we will be getting an HD TV with it.
  20. They are definitely a problem where we are, so the wood pile is a good distance from the house. If you have it close to the house, the termites will first find the wood and then move on to your house. We have had too many neighbors have termites to take that chance!
