  2. Still here with you. :grouphug:
  3. has passed away. I met Silas Martin at a small local homeschool conference years ago and enjoyed chatting with him. Since there are many of us here who have ordered Rod & Staff textbooks from Milestone Books, I thought you might want to know. Obituary for Silas Martin
  4. There are different ways to invite people. We were given a flyer with a code on it when we went to the yearly July 4th celebration. My guess is she would have typed in your e-mail address, but I would ask. Our city staff uses the website to make announcements about things like the kids' summer program, the 4th of July BBQ, and the Christmas cookie exchange. Community members have used the sight to post free items, to ask about local child care, and to see if anyone else is having problems with cable/internet service (some work from home). New neighbors are welcomed as they join which helps form a sense of community. One use that has been really helpful is for lost pets. Neighbors will make the announcement that they have a dog at their house and ask if anyone knows who it belongs to it. It has saved folks from making a trip to the vet to check for a chip. I like it. :)
  5. Thanks for the link. I had an hour of down time today and it was enjoyable to watch. I'm seriously considering giving loop scheduling another try this coming school year.
  6. There's no need to make Quill feel criticized. Different isn't wrong. I feel for you. The houses in our neighborhood are very close (duplexes) and I'm an introvert. I would love to live on some acreage away from yapping dogs and kids ringing my doorbell. BUT my kids love it here. I've found that there are two types of neighborhood kids: 1) No need for supervision. These are the kids which are a joy to have over. I do my thing. They do their thing. 2) Constant need for supervision. When these type of kids come over, I can't get anything done because I am constantly checking to see what they are doing, "fixing" things/spats, or entertaining them. If these kids come over to play, I send them to play at the park.
  7. Congratulations! We've been down the depression/counseling/medication road, so my heart goes out to you and your daughter. My 2nd dd never went to public school and basically unschooled while we took care of her mental health. She has come a long way and now attends community college full time. There is hope. I wish the same success for your daughter.
  8. You might consider reading this book: Simply Classical.
  9. I wish people would click on photos before sharing them - missing people, looking for adoptive parents, etc. If you click on the photo and skim the comments, you'll usually find that the child was found or the adoptive parents [edit - biological parents] have been in contact months ago. I will usually post a comment with a link or just a message that the child was found. Recently a friend shared a picture of a missing autistic girl. I recognized the picture. The poor little girl died two years ago and yet her picture is still being shared on Facebook.
  10. This was the plan for 2014/2015. It always amazes me how different plans and reality are. Probably the thing I'm happiest about is swimming lessons. Last summer DD went on a boating trip with her Sunday School class and realized that she was being left out of the fun because she couldn't safely venture out into deeper water with her friends. Gotta love her. She didn't mind at all having lessons with 3 & 4 year olds. :) She's advanced four levels and will probably continue lessons in the fall.
  11. I'm not a very spiritual person, but I want you to know I'm checking every day and wishing the best for your son. :grouphug:
  12. BTDT. DD came to me and really wanted to go to public school. She was lonely even though she had siblings at home, attended an early morning class at church every school day, and was involved in a weekly co-op. She wanted to try her wings and be like other kids. There was absolutely no way she was ready academically. DD decided to go in as a freshman even though kids her age were sophomores. We talked to the counselor and he wouldn't give us any options for a math class lower than Algebra 1. This is a kid who hadn't finished Math 7. DD struggled the first few months (older sister tutored her in Algebra every evening) and didn't take on any extra curricular activities that year. She was learning how to be a public school student. By the end of the year, her teachers were trying to get her to sign up for honors English. This year has been more challenging as she added a sport (cheer), but again she was almost forced to sign up for honors classes in a few subjects. When she expressed her concern, the teacher pointed out that she would be able to do it because she is a hard worker. After looking at the syllabus, we jointly decided that honors classes would be too time consuming along with cheer. I think that is one of the keys - hard work. Academics are not easy for her but she has succeeded because she wants to be there.

  14. This might answer your question: http://www.memoriapress.com/articles/memoria-press-two-track-history
  15. Thanks for asking. I'm in a similar boat. We are going to go through R&S Math 8 and then I don't know what will happen. I believe R&S is still working on an Algebra book. I keep hoping it will be ready, but I've been waiting on it for years. http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/545133-rod-staff-newsletteralgebra/
  16. Here is what we use for the basics: We use Rod & Staff for English, Math, and Science. R&S Science - we enjoyed their books for grades 3-6. R&S History - it focused more on history from a Mennonite perspective with each grade level. I didn't want to spend a lot of time skipping around as we read. If you have read through SOTW and want a textbook, I would recommend K-12's The Human Odyssey.
  17. Just a heads up... Last day for this school year - June 5 First day for 2015/2016 - August 17
  18. Maybe not a box but a change in approach - something like the Swanns? "Yet, although we were in school every day, our hours were not long. Most days we studied only three hours -- from 8:30 to 11:30 in the morning. The rest of our day was our own. We played outside, performed household chores, read books and generally did the things which interested us."
  19. Another idea. My Student Logbook. The video shows you how it is used.
  20. Came across this quote: “There is no such thing as a moral or an immoral book. Books are well written, or badly written. That is all.â€Oscar Wilde https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/135567-there-is-no-such-thing-as-a-moral-or-an
  21. Trip to the doctor. Could be a hormone imbalance. 90 lbs. in 14 months makes me think this isn't your usual depression.
