Teen Finally Diagnosed... I'm Overwhelmed
hsmomma replied to Smurphygt's topic in The Learning Challenges Board
You have gotten so many good responses and this may be somewhat repetitive, however: I dont think your therapist is supportive of homeschooling and that is clouding her/his assessment. Going off to a four year college is not the answer for many many children, diagnosis or not. You can find other ways to have your son be accountable. When boys get a certain age I think it is important that they answer to their dad or another man you trust. -
I posted this on the special needs board and didnt get many bites so I am trying over here. Sorry if you are reading it twice. I am looking for a solid writing program for my 17yo. It can be geared toward younger writers. I would like to increase his ability to be a functional writer. Short reports for college, work, letters, notes. I am wondering if anyone has come across a program that is not full of bells and whistles but stresses paragraph construction, and the various kinds of essays. We have done several things but he has a LD is in this area and it has been in one ear and out the other.

Searching for a solid writing program

That looks like a great deal. I just couldnt commit to IEW on my own but doing something online seems like a good way to get through it. -

What are you using for ACT Prep? Or if your child is taking the SAT, how will you prepare for that test?

We really like MFW K. With one of my boys(been through 2'x so far) he knew his letter names and most of the sounds when we started. We just added readers when it was to slow. The animal part of the lessons was such a hit I think for that age she will enjoy it and we make heavy use of the library with the reading list.

Tell me about your Digital Portfolios
hsmomma replied to sweetpea3829's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I attended a workshop on saving everything on a flash drive to organize and cut down on paper but I am not doing it yet. I still like looking at the actual stuff. Something about scanning it and throwing it away I am not ready for yet but I think that is where we are headed. When you use the term portfolio it also sounds more inviting. Hopefully some creative mom will let us know what she is doing:bigear: -
I think that is why you get the Beta discount price. We are the testers :glare:. Compared to other onliner planners it is a decent discount and we get to learn along the way, I am good with that. There are plenty of bugs yet, the email with your account activation comes through automatically for some(it did for me) and not for others( had friends who had to email about it). I love the paper planner too(used the large one last year) but my Dh really wanted us to go digital and he is really excited about being able to log in himself and check out what is scheduled and but his schedule in so I can see when he will be away. We are also excited that the older kids will have more accountability having no excuses about I lost my planner when it will be on their computer or phone! My good fried of mine who is a paper planner lover like me writes her plans out for a basic outline of the year, then enters things into Tracker weekly and prints it off for the kids. I think I am going to start out the same way with WPD. I like it for the record keep part too.

TOG books: how important are the exact titles for LG and UG?
hsmomma replied to I.Dup.'s topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
If you are going to use the questions then yes it matters but if you arent using then questions in the TM or the thinking questions or the Quiz supplement then you could sub out. I think it matters more in the upper levels. -
Can Geography = Science?
hsmomma replied to Second Time Around's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
I would recommend Runkle World Physical Geography Set (Welcome to the Wonderful World of Geography), By Brenda Brewer Runkle. It is a through physical Geography text with land forms, and all kind of earth science at a high school level but also has the geography of mapping and memorization that I wanted the children to know. It was not an easy course(fair warning:) -
I am searching for some feedback on one or both of these programs. Lightning Literature for 7th grade https://www.hewitthomeschooling.com/Materials/mItem.aspx?id=8081 or Learning Language Arts through Literature the green book http://www.commonsensepress.com/green.htm I would like a program that teaches langauage arts with real books. I had pretty much had decided that I was using LLATL but now our local coop is using Lightning Lit and it is making me second guess my choice. Any thoughts would be great:bigear: Thank you

Diane Craft's Brain Integration Therapy Manual
hsmomma replied to Quiver0f10's topic in The Learning Challenges Board
The book has been updated and has more pages. I think the goal was to be more user friendly and has lesson layouts. I emailed Dianne last year and asked about the difference. I went for a used copy of the older book and we are happy with it but it is only a beginning not a complete therapy in a book.
