  1. O/T, but her scores are excellent. No need to push for 800s on math and critical reading when she already has a 770 in each section! Depending on schools she is considering, you might look into whether or not any of them require SAT Subject Tests.
  2. Can you set up a separate e-mail and change what is registered at College Board? I had read somehwere on CC to set up a separate e-mail account to use for that purpose. We did it before ds took the PSAT, but I would think you would have a way to change the e-mail address you are using with the college board. Ds used the e-mail he *really* used to put on actual college applications once that time came around.
  3. I think the trade v. college perception is a false dichotomy. I have a friend who has a Masters in Anthropology from Texas A& M (he and I went to undergrad together) who is an incredible brick mason. This was due, primarily, to the fact that he coudn't get a job with a Masters in Anthropology, but I have homeschool friends who are truly pursuing both options. I don't think it has to be an either/or proposition.
  4. Yay! I *finally* get to post on this thread! Ds flew in yesterday. Dh picked him up at the airport, and we surprised him by having five of his friends meet us at a restaurant for dinner. I would say about half of his closest local friends are in town for the summer. He will have around three and a half weeks to decompress at bit and will then be interning in our Congressman's local office. Has three weeks in England and Wales for his summer study abroad which is themed around the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta. Then home for about a week before he heads back out in September. The summer abroad seminar worked out perfectly timing-wise as it fills in that gap period when his semester schedule friends (which are ALL of them; no one else is on quarters) have started back but he has not. His summer is a great mix of down time, interning time, and travel time. Lucky boy! Oh, also taking piano lessons and will work in a visit to see his grandparents. I haven't really talked to him much as he was focused on the friends last night. They came back to the house to have a dessert I had made. :) He is sleeping in while I am doing his laundry (probably the only time this summer I will do it for him!). Piano starts early this afternoon, and I imagine he will sleep in with only enough time to eat lunch before he goes. I am eager to have long, meaningful chats. Even though we talk on the phone weekly for about half an hour, it is really hard to work in conversation that is very deep in such a short period of time. Ds truly had a fantastic first year. His grades thus far have been outstanding - he already has an A+ posted for one of his spring quarter classes! He has thrived socially and seems to have really managed his time well and found a great balance between work and play. I am happy for him. Very glad he is home! Regentrude, is your dd home yet? You are one of the only other quarter parents I know of!
  5. I guess it depends on how one defines "regional." I looked up data for the class of 2018 for a few schools. Davidson had 38.9% coming from the Southeast. Harvard had 40% coming from New England and the mid-Atlantic. Stanford had 33% from California alone. I think most schools try to draw from as many states as possible. That's why many are always recruiting from North Dakota! My alma mater of Hendrix (mentioned in this thread and not ranked as high as Davidson) usually has about 40% from the state of Arkansas and about 33-35 other states "represented."
  6. Absolutely true! And that should be discussed as well. Ds gave up any opportunity he had for us to fund graduate school by choosing the school he did. But, Gwen's point is well-taken about institutional wealth. And there are likely cases in between the two extremes where one would hit a break-even point.
  7. We had a certain amount of money that we were willing and able to spend on ds's college education. The Pile. The Pile would allow attendance at any undergraduate university. We do not qualify for need-based aid so were full-freight at schools where he either did not receive merit money or it was unavailable (because no merit money is offered to anyone). We definitely talked about many of the benefits you listed of a lower-cost school. An additional consideration not on your list was our willingness to pay for all/part of graduate school depending on how much of The Pile he used up. Some fields need graduate school more than others. If he did not go to graduate school, any leftover money could have been used for *reasonable* costs of getting established after graduation (car, down payment on a house, furniture, etc. - not a huge trip/party in Vegas!). Travel abroad is a great example. We had told ds if he chose a less expensive school, we would cover some summer travel abroad for him. If he chose full-freight, he would get his one quarter abroad on us but that was it. He chose a full-pay, expensive school. Of course, in autumn quarter, we received a text from him talking about a three-week summer study abroad seminar he wanted to apply for. This is where Gwen's comment about wealth of the institution comes in. The three-week course has a mere cost of $600. He will earn two units of credit. It is heavily subsidized by the university, and that $600 covers course work, tours, room, and all but about three meals. So, we relented a bit on our "only one quarter abroad" policy because it was so affordable (and because it is for credit). It is also only available for a student to participate in one summer out of their collegiate career. However, we stuck to our guns otherwise, and he is paying for his $1,400 airfare and for any other incidentals out of his own funds. A local mom friend shared details in a FB post with her ds about a five-week summer program out of our local (much less expensive to attend) state flagship where the ds attends listed as costing $6,000 without airfare and with no meals. Gwen is absolutely correct about a wealthier school having more money available. Ds has recently changed his major, and I simply reiterated our four years only policy as that will use up the entirety of The Pile. There will be no relenting on that because The Pile will be gone. So, I think it is important to consider and discuss all of the factors you listed. One other might be travel distance/cost to come home. We flew ds home for Thanksgiving this, his freshman, year but we likely won't be doing that going forward. We talked about all these issues, but we left the decision up to ds as to how he wanted to spend The Pile.
  8. When you say "regional," do you mean tending to pull in from the nearby geographic region? I think most schools are this way.
  9. Seconding Hendrix - no bias! ha ha! It's my alma mater! Happy to answer any questions you might have, though MysteryJen's ds attends now. She and her ds would have more recent info, I'm sure.
  10. "Just not a really effusive sharer," fits my ds to a T! But for some of his friends who are girls posting and tagging on FB, I wouldn't have much of an idea of what he was doing socially. In general, I just don't think boys share much with their mamas once they get past a certain age. I suppose it is normal, and I don't want a mama's boy, but I do wish I got a wee bit more info!

What style of music does he want to play? Is he wanting to pick or strum? Sing along or play the melody? Solo or with a group?
  12. This. So much. I live here. People in my homeschooling community were well-aware of ATI, Vision Forum, Pearls, etc. You cannot be a homeschooler in NorthWest Arkansas and not have people ask you, "Do you know the Duggars?" I don't, but I knew people who knew them and people who attended their church. I have seen some at restaurants. I have seen some attending (not participating in) local group homeschool graduation ceremonies. Anytime they were spotted filming, it would be on FB posts of friends. I received the robocall. But, to the average, curious viewer, I think the quoted post hits the nail on the head.
  13. No argument from me! I just shared the link!! ha ha. I certainly don't think it makes it all better! Though I don't think you were directing that comment to me. ;) The statute would not have started to run if the incidents had not been reported. The issue, of course, is whether the meeting with the state trooper qualifies as being "reported." This has been my thought process all along - what does it take to qualify as reported and in whose eyes? ETA: Thanks, Catwoman. We were posting at the same time.
  14. Don't think I have seen this article linked: http://m.nwaonline.com/news/2015/may/31/duggar-witness-contradicts-corporal-s-c/ It states that the elder from the church accompanied Josh and Jim Bob to the state trooper's office in 2003 and that he contradicts what the state trooper said about only being told about one incident.
  15. Ds did sign something so that we could have access to the financial information/billing. We receive the bills so we can pay them. Unlike my sil's situation in the other post we could not directly give ds the money to pay the bills himself without incurring a gift tax each year. We have to pay them directly to the university to avoid that. I have not a clue about a waiver allowing us to see his grades or if it is the same as the waiver for seeing financial information. To my knowledge, I cannot access his grades at all, nor would I want to. He is responsible for those, though we told him that we want to know what his grades are at the end of each quarter. His charter high school had a log in for constantly checking grades, but I rarely did. I also let him know when he left that when I asked about classes I wanted to know what he was learning and how he was liking them - I did not expect constant reports on his grades.
  16. That is so tragic. :( For my niece, it was later in her college career that challenges came to light. She lied for what would have been her entire senior year of college about what she was doing. She lived off-campus in an apartment with two other girls and had a part-time job. My sil and bil always just deposited her tuition money into her account and she paid it. Until her senior year when she never enrolled at all and lied about it all year long. Apparently, she had flunked out her junior year, but no one ever knew. About three weeks prior to her class's graduation date, she finally fessed up. This was about five weeks prior to ds's high school graduation. Dh and I basically felt sad for her for having to lie for so long and were worried that there might be deeper issues. Sadly, my in-laws were more about shame and blame. My narcissistic (sp??) father-in-law was "disappointed" which is code for angry because everyone and their successes or failures are an extension of him. Honestly, I am not sure I saw him speak to her at all at our family Christmas gathering this past year. Her parents were far more understanding (it's not like sil had a straight path herself, which is why it seemed strange to me that niece wasn't more forthcoming with her). Niece started a different job and has since re-enrolled part-time and seems to be doing well. However, the mil and especially the fil offer nothing but skepticism about her ability now. I understand that she broke trust with everyone, but there is no encouragement (only doubt) coming from them. I am thankful that sil and bil have been more supportive. Fil seems to have no concern for HER - only about appearances. I definitely used this as a teachable moment for ds. I (accurately) predicted that niece would not come to his high school graduation. They are the only two grandchildren. She was far too smart to put herself in a situtation that was bound to lead to comparison. I don't blame her. It was an opportunity to tell ds that he could tell us anything, no matter what. And, if he hated his college, or it was too much, or it was too far, or WHATEVER, it was OKAY - he could just come home. I truly hope that ds knows that my love for him is not tied to his performance in school.
  17. I "liked" your post for sharing your story, but I don't like the tossed in the trash part. So sorry. If my ds were to transfer to a Big State U, I feel certain they wouldn't know what to do with some of his "weird" classes either. I'm sure her year will be easy, and I hope she enjoys her new school!
  18. But, when it came out and when the police investigation was done, couldn't it be reported that it had not been reported? Is the point that it was "reported" to pervy porn state trooper? When did JB tell him? I need to find the timeline. The "stern talking to" was in 2003? Did they "count" that as reporting to a law enforcement agency since he was a state trooper? If that doesn't "count" then it hadn't been reported.
  19. I can't find the seven-year thing anywhere??? Perhaps it is codified elsewhere.
  20. Subsection (h) of the statute came into effect in 1987. I can't get it to copy and paste very well, and it's rather long within that link.
  21. http://www.arkleg.state.ar.us/assembly/2013/2013R/Bills/SB92.pdf The above link shows the change in 2013. I also found this: http://law.justia.com/codes/arkansas/2010/title-5/subtitle-1/chapter-1/5-1-109 I am not sure when that subsection (h) exception came into effect. This link is listed as of 2010. If that subsection (h) was in effect, it seem as though it could have been employed.
  22. Thank you. I was just coming back to edit and say I had found it. Good grief! That's quite a convo going over there. This thread is taking up enough of my time as it is. Don't think I can add another message board on this topic!
  23. I can't figure out how to navigate the FJ site. Where are these threads? Under Quiverfull of Snark? What forum are they under? Sorry to be dumb.
  24. Coming? What in the world? I think that was supposed to have been "comparing." I clearly need to stay off the boards until later in the morning when I have had more coffee. Good grief!
  25. Are you comparing the University of SOUTH Florida to the University of Tampa in your above post? I got confused - when I see UF I think University of Florida in Gainesville.
