  1. https://eps.schoolspecialty.com/products/literacy/grammar-writing A company that publishes and sells educational materials. Explode the Code is one of their more well known products. The above link is for the things I mentioned above.
  2. ABeka seems to focus on punctuation and practical skills early on rather than parts of speech so in that way it seems slower. But what it does, it does thoroughly. For my dd who is not dyslexic but has a problem like dysgraphia and ADHD, we used the Just Write Series from EPS very painlessly. You wouldn't have to start with book 1, maybe 2 or three. My friend with a truly dysgraphic DS is using the Paragraph Bookbseries from EPS. Some people like Writing Skills.
  3. I think RR and CBD sell it, and cheaper there than at Apologia probably. ETA: Oops!
  4. I really, really love this but dd is getting a bit sick of it. We use it on a three day a week schedule to avoid burn out so it won't be finished this year, but pretty close. She is retaining because of the review, which is really nice, because I have a history of three older kids not really retaining grammar despite being strong readers and writers. I'm wondering about how to best use it in the future, to get the most out of it without making dd hate it. Should I get the sixth grade level for next year and continue the same way using it three days a week? Another option would be to get the seventh and use it two days a week, stretching it out over two years. Or would it be better to use the sixth grade book three days a week for sixth grade and saturate her with grammar for two years before moving on to a two day a week schedule in seventh and eighth grade? Any thoughts?
  5. Thank you! I thought it would have been up already but I couldn't find it.
  6. I had two kids with very similar writing issues. For one, I continued to scribe until junior high in some subjects. In others, she started typing in fifth or sixth grade. Imagine my surprise when she took an assessment for a private school at the end of eighth grade and placed into honors writing and literature. She gets straight A's in high school and I don't think she would have done as well as your DS did in testing in third. There is hope for kids who don't write in early elementary years! My next one has reached the point where she enjoys writing stories, but not much else. I'm not worried too much about her because I can tell she has solid langauge skills. Scribe to get him to reach the goals you have for him while taking away the stress of writing. You could try occupational therapy to try to understand the problems more and try to figure out what might help. I think I waited to the summer after third grade to do that with my youngest.
  7. About the cost of counseling.... Of all the counseling stints I've had over the years, the best was as a young teen when my grandparents took me to their local church where I met with a woman at no charge. I have no idea what her credentials were but I found just a few meetings with her very helpful. My friend suffered a lot losing a child and then their home. She went to a church minister for counseling and she had a very positive experience. It wasn't her denomination but there was no pressure with regards to beliefs. If I were ever in the position of needing counseling but not being able to afford it, I'd call a church or a synagogue to see what was available,
  8. I would look further into whether or not it's appropriate to take both of those AP classes. Often it's one or the other depending on ability, motivation, and future goals.
  9. Creekland, I have some memory of a post you made a long while back about fluctuating blood pressure and maybe some lows? Am I remembering this right? And ten you made a comment way upthread that made me think of dysautonomia. Then you said vasular issue and I thought the same thing. Dysautonomia. I used to have a lot of problems because of it. Then I worked really hard to get myself in shape. I feel better. I can work out strenuously. But my body can still be very wonky when it comes to circulation, especially heart rare and blood pressure to a lesser degree. Not too long ago I read that there's some research being done that connects this problem to muscles (maybe in the diaphragm?) and a tendency to breathe shallowly. The research was saying it was caused by a muscle problem. But if one's body tends to poorly regulate its autonomic processes, breathing could be affected, too, even if the muscle theory is wrong.
  10. Writers in Residence is colorful for writing. But I prefer a more rigorous grammar because it helps with Latin. Also, I wouldn't rely on ABeka for writing, just grammar.
  11. ABeka is colorful. It's pace is a little slower than FLL for the same level in terms of the concepts it introduces. I used it for a few years with one kid and was pleased, but my other kids would have been visually overwhelmed with the number of sentences to work through in each exercise.
  12. Thanks. We started with the tickle/mild irritation a little bit before, too.
  13. About the posture. There's a tape you can use. I think a physical therapist would have it, but we got it from an occupational therapist. The OT put strips of tape on DD's back. I think it helped remind her (consciously) and her muscles (unconsciously) the stand up straight. Google Kinseo tape for posture.
  14. Dh would like to trade places with you after having four daughters and two female dogs in the house and another on the way. He even suspects the lizards are female.
  15. Antihistamine? I decided to start Allegra after my stomach started bothering me from the mucus and it helped.
  16. I'm glad you went to the doctor and there aren't any secondary infections. I hope it runs its course quickly and you feel better soon. Dd complained last night that her throat was starting to hurt and I just thought, here we go, prepare for the long haul. This morning it's her throat, her head, and her joints. I'm curious about how your symptoms started? Was it with a sore throat or cough or fever? Did it come on suddenly or slowly? I'm just trying to figure out if what we had is the flu. What was different from the usual virus, besides the long duration, is that dh and I got hit harder than the kids. Usually, it's the opposite. But littlest dd is just starting so we'll have to wait and see.
  17. She isn't ours. We're just raising her for a year for an organization that breeds and trains guide dogs for the blind. The decision about whether or not the dog will go into service or be bred is made by the organization after the dog returns to them for training. Most dogs are neutered in the first month after returning to them and only the ones that show exceptional promise as guide dogs are kept for breeding.
  18. I hadn't thought of that. She's alternating between hanging her head and being very playful.
  19. I have a dd who was miserable and and hard to be around. Medicine really made her a nice person because depression and anxiety were the root of her problem. I've seen quite a few threads over the years of parents describing behaviors and thinking the kid was selfish and awful and sometimes posters responding about improving discipline and it makes me sad because it was so much like my dd. I think more discipline without medication would probably have caused my her to have become suicidal eventually, instead she's thriving. But I will admit her executive function is awful. My oldest was a bit similar. She never seemed to listen as a child. In her teens we found out she had auditory processing disorder. She is actually a people pleaser, helpful, nurturing. But her behavior could have been interpreted as defiant early on, only because she wasn't able to understand what we said to her quite a bit of the time. Now we know and she knows, so she can advocate for herself to avoid misunderstandings when she's out in the world with friends or working. Now I have another relative who is not nice on meds, with counseling, whatever. The explanation for that is NPD. It's hard to be sympathetic after years of dealing with that. And I have zero patience for drug and alcohol abuse, even if it's considered a disease.
  20. This bug is lasting a long time! I'm on day nine. My fevers have only been coming on at night. I thought I was better yesterday and today I feel lousy again. I probably did too much yesterday trying to catch up. Dh is on his second round of antibiotics for a secondary infection. He's been sick for longer than I've been. And a friend on ours was sock several days before him and still isn't completely well. I've had worse viruses but this is long-lasting. I didn't think it was the flu because I always heard the flu comes on fast and hard and this one seemed to build slowly, but who knows?
  21. This is our first time having a dog in heat. Yesterday, she was walking along the furniture and walls rubbing her side against them. Today she's doing the same thing, but taking a running start, bumping, and then sliding along the side of walls and furniture. It's very cute to watch, but is this normal? I couldn't find any information on this kind of behavior by googling. At first I thought her pants were too tight but they seem pretty loose and haven't seemed to bother her.
  22. Creekland, Do you have impressions of St. Vincent's in Latrobe? We know a couple of families with kids who have gone there to study science and had good outcomes in jobs and grad school. I was once told they seem to appreciate musicians. Their merit seems good and stacks.
  23. Susquehanna offers a major my next DD is interested in, whereas Elizabethtown does not. So it's been on my radar but I haven't visited. Does it also have a CTCL vibe?
