  1. http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/2010/01/restaurant-style-salsa/ I love this salsa recipe!
  2. I'm a newbie around here so I feel a little funny about posting most of the time. However, this is a subject I'm confident about. My DH is a drill sgt and I want you to know that your son will be in good hands. Our military is doing a wonderful job training new soldiers. DH and all the other drill sgts work VERY hard to make sure the pvts are ready for active duty. If your son has common sense, knows how to follow directions and has respect for those training him he'll do just fine. Hugs to you and thank you for supporting his decision to join the military. Your support will take him far!:grouphug:
  3. My SIL (who is millitary): Oh, I know all about homeschooling, it is very common in the millitary. I've never seen it be successful This is cr-aaaaaa-zy! I'm a military hs mom, and I know a TON of military hs moms that are amazing! Their kids are doing great. Personally, I can't think of a better fit for military life than homeschooling. With our move this year, dd8 would been in 2 different schools in 2 different countries and would have missed about a month. Instead, we started a few weeks early and will have the first unit done in time to PCS and pick right up when we get there. She'll miss no school at all! Us military homeschoolers will be just fine thank you!;)
  4. Thanks for this post! I'd never heard of that book before so I just checked it out and it's exactly what I was looking for. I bought the Kindle edition as well. You ladies are very informative and super helpful! One question though, can I please be done buying curriculum now? DH is going to have my hide if I buy anything else for this year!
  5. We just finished up our second week of TOG and I'm starting to feel like it's clicking. I'm figuring out a system for organization, weeding out what I like and don't like, and making a schedule that works! Woohoo! I realize it's still very early into our grade 3 year, but dd and I both agree that we like what we're doing. I love that she's as excited as I am about the curriculum. We hit a small bump in the history part, but SOTW arrived and now she LOVES it and asks for it on days it's not scheduled. God is sooooo good and He's blessing our homeschool this year!:party::party:
  6. Do any of you have the PERFECT weekly schedule form? I'm looking for one to use with dd8. Currently I'm using the TOG forms and they're just okay. I know you ladies are craftier and more clever than I am and have created your own. Share please!
  7. Have you seen the ones that Sonlight has? We are using SOTW 2 also and they have a set that I'm going to order. Off hand I can't remember what exactly it's called, but it's very easy to search on their site.
  8. Sorry your day was crummy! Sounds like someone should get you some coffee and alone time.:) Try again tomorrow. :grouphug::grouphug:
  9. Hey everyone. In the spirit of getting to know you all, here's a little bit about me. My name is Kerri and my real middle name is NOT Berri. Once I know you better I might tell you that it's really Ellen. Oops, that slipped right out! Anyway, I have 3 beautiful girls: Thing 1, Thing 2 and Thing 3. I'm the wife of a brave Army SFC. Currently Thing 1 is the only one in school, grade 3. Things 2 and 3 are 2 1/2 and 9 months and into absolutely everything. Sometimes I complain, especially when I haven't had enough coffee, but I'm a blessed woman. I'm looking forward to getting to know some of you better. So far I've laughed, been encouraged, had questions answered, and scratched my head at some of you. Here's a quick newbie question. What's with the popcorn bucket with a smiley face?
  10. Deep breath...here we go. Already mine: Audrey Emma Rori The rest: Liesel Friedrich Louisa Kurt Brigitta Marta Gretl Tzeitel Hodel Chava Shprintze Bielke Charlie Annie Too fun!!!
  11. I'm new, very new, around here but here's what I know. I have three kiddos and only one of them is schooling right now, I'm also an Army wife. Compared to a lot of you, my plate isn't too terribly full. That being said, I hardly have the time to keep up with my puny amount of posts. How in the world does someone keep up with four different accounts? I'm trying to remember what I had for breakfast!
  12. TOG Year 2 Teaching Textbooks Writing with Ease First Language Lessons Pictures in Cursive Apologia Science Sequential Spelling Foundations Old Testament and daily devotions Hymn study Health-The Care and Keeping of You & Journal We Choose Virtues Song School Greek Am I missing something? I hope not, that's quite a list! We don't do all of that everyday. Can you imagine? We'd be up with the chickens!
  13. My dd is the same. She did get bored with the amount of conquering and war that was covered. We cut back on the "intensity" of the reading because the books were above her level anyway. For UG they had a book scheduled that says on the back it's for 11 and up. We shelved it and brought out A Child's History of the World from last year. She grasped that much better. TOG truly is a buffet so you can choose what works and scrap what doesn't.
  14. I'm new to TOG this year, in fact we've been using it for a whole 4 days! I really like it. Something I've discovered through this forum and really looking at the material is that there are quite a few books that you could easily not buy. I bought every single required resource for the first two units of year 2 and have already come upon some books that are used, literally, for one day. One book was scheduled for week one and it had us scheduled to read two pages, that's it. :glare: It's a great book so we looked at more than just the two pages, but I think that's a bit silly. I couldn't tell you off hand how much the book cost, but if I had known then what I know now I wouldn't have bought it. I could have easily supplemented something else. Looking ahead to units 3 and 4 of this year, I'm most likely only going to buy books that are scheduled for use in more than one week. That will take the cost down quite a bit. Actually I'll buy all the books that are activity books because that's what DD likes the most. I hope this helps! It felt like the heavens opened up with "hallelujahs" when I read another post that shared this info. I really want to stick with TOG so anything that cuts it's cost is helpful.:001_smile:
  15. I love the fountain pen idea! Thank you for posting it!:D
  16. Both actually. I'm not so concerned (yet) about the cursive because we just started that last year. Her printed letters and numbers are my biggest concern. I feel like she's trying to be quick and that's part of the problem. I'm just wondering how strict I should be about it. I should mention DD will be 8 at the end of the month. Is it age appropriate to not want to take the time to make things look nice?
  17. I'd love some advice on how to help my DD with her penmanship. When she first started writing her penmanship was beautiful, but now it's gotten sloppy. Not just her letters, but her numbers as well. Do I just need to get "tough" with her or will she remedy it on her own? I've tried to tell her she needs to do work that she's proud of, but it's not clicking. How many times should you have a 3rd grader redo her handwriting lesson? I could really use some help!
  18. We started back today also. All was good except the history part. It seems like I'm going to need to edit quite a bit to keep DD's attention. Definitely do-able though and the rest of the day was GREAT!!
  19. Does anyone know of a good, free website to make vocabulary worksheets? We're starting TOG this year and I'm wondering how to approach the vocabulary part of the lessons. We've never really done a vocabulary program so I'm not sure about the best way to teach it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  20. I just received a Kindle this weekend from my in-laws, and I'm ready to download some books. I have a gift card, but no clue where to start. What are some of your favorite books? Help me decide what to buy!!!
  21. Thanks ladies! Your encouragement has been a blessing. It's so easy to fall into the " am I doing enough" trap. I'm a fairly new homeschool mom so I have a lot of questions and a few insecurities. You've all been very helpful!:grouphug:
