  1. Stephanie, Thanks so much for trying to explain it to me. My background in grammar is quite weak though so I still don't understand. Could someone try to explain it in terms purely related to the definition of state of being verbs?
  2. On day four of week 13 there is this dictation: By lunchtime the valley was lightly coated, like a cake with confectioner's sugar; and by half past three the snow was of a respectable depth. The TM states that the second was is a state of being verb. Why isn't it a linking verb? Thanks for any help, Sylvia
  3. My son found a fabulous error in his Spelling Workout workbook. In the instructions for a section about writing a descriptive paragraph it states: "... Be sure to proofread you work."
  4. I am in Cheyenne and we have been able to smell it inside our house for days. At first all of town looked like it had a Denver-type smog. Cheyenne's air is ALWAYS clear! My dh works outside in the western part of Ft. Collins and he said he is getting headaches and it smells like he is constantly standing next to a campfire.
  5. Just giving this a quick bump in case afternoon Hive members hadn't seen it. I'm excited to do our bonus math on the whiteboard feature. :001_smile:
  6. I frequent a software giveaway site, giveawayoftheday.com Today they are giving away software called Presentation Marker. I had downloaded it a few years ago when they had offered it before. Here is the blurb from the developer's site: (Deleted per SWB's request of 9/10/14) If you didn't notice in the attached image, it also has a whiteboard option. It's a pretty neat little utility. Thought you all might be able to use it. Just a note: when I went to the developer's site itself it gave me a WOT warning. I personally ignored it since I have used their software and found nothing wrong at all. YMMV. You only need to go to the giveaway site to get the software. I always visit the developer's site in order to learn more about the software before downloading it.
  7. OK, that's just wrong. Who does that? I'm going to be giggling all night now. :D
  8. Please tell me that there really isn't a town called Intercourse, PA. I can barely stop giggling enough to put down my wine and type that!
  9. May I ask how you all seem to have so much information regarding the conferences? I just learned about them this morning and there isn't much listed on their website. I can't even find out how much the registration cost would be. I am considering the Long Beach conference unless it is already too late.
  10. So I guess I need them all! Arghhh. Your suggestion of creating the best of is good for MEP. Too bad no one has done that, combining all of them or, at least, Miquon and MEP. How in the world can someone touch all these bases? I wish it didn't feel like I must choose which skill will have to be skipped. Otherwise I would be doing math all day. Thanks for your evaluation.
  11. Thanks for helping me think this through and clarifying the differences between the two. It's good to hear that the supplements I am considering are good programs.
  12. My ds (2nd grade) is using MUS. We are near the end of Beta. He has had lots of exposure to other math concepts through computer math games and a separate curriculum I have which is based on geometric shapes, divided cubes and other crafty manipulatives, e.g. multiplication, fractions. He is obviously a math thinker because he will often come up to me and tell me about some connection he has made about numbers. He has always liked MUS but I know he just wants to learn more "hard stuff." He loves challenges so I want to give him that while still progressing in MUS. We are going to add in Challenging Word Problems this week. He hasn't had a lot of exposure to mental math (at least what I understand mental math to be) so I am hoping that as we work through CWP he will gain that skill. I am wondering if that is enough though. I have looked at the following and like what they offer for varying reasons, but I've only seen samples so I may be understating what some of these programs offer. I was wondering if there is an additional challenging supplement that contains all that I like about these individual programs. MEP - I like the puzzle problems (for lack of a better description) - visual puzzles as well as the equation type puzzles, etc. - but I don't want to waste our time and paper having him skip all the math problems that he is already getting in MUS. Miquon - I like that they seem to demonstrate all the connections with numbers, e.g. odd plus odd equals even. Would this require more wading through more math problems as in MEP? Does it have more than just what I've listed? Primary Grade Challenge Math - The description looks interesting but the samples I've found don't give me much to go on. It states that it has higher math skills like negative numbers, ratios, probability etc. but, according to one review, it was a way to "add extra challenge without 'teaching ahead'." Thanks for any advice.
  13. We became acquainted with TDK because my sister's family are all black belts. I watched her already marvelous two boys become even more amazing largely through TKD. I got to watch my eldest nephew warm-up and lead the beginning of a class. (His level of black-belt means that he is sort of an instructor in training.) His confidence and maturity in leading mostly adults, (even up to 50 year-olds) including his own mother, was beyond impressive. Both boys also play other sports and it has helped them to avoid injury. The eldest plays football and he has told me that many of the falls and lessons about how to generate power, etc. directly translated to skills he could use on the field and the coaches even noticed those exact skills. My dh and I truly wanted that for our ds. My son has been in TKD for about 8 months and it's cool to see the same values and beliefs that he hears at home being preached there. He has fallen in love with the sport even though for the first few months he wasn't sure that he wanted to do it.
  14. I would also be in-ish depending upon the date etc. I would be coming from Wyoming as well Denver is a bit of a drive but it would be so worth it to be able to meet some of you. :auto: What a great idea - thanks for including us WY folks.... I am originally from CO though, so I love any excuse to go home.
  15. I found a book called Raw and Natural Nutrition For Dogs. The author has a section on liver recipes which includes recommended supplements. She covers all aspects of feeding your dog and she has special sections for varying kinds of health issues plus how to how to add some nutrition to packaged dog food. I'm not trying to be evasive by not giving you all the specifics. It's just that there is a lot of information that I wouldn't want to skip, like preparation method. The author also has a yahoo group called K9Nutrition where you can ask specific questions. All the recipes for liver needs are cooked. You want to focus on low-ammonia protein sources. Also, she advises serving 4-6 smaller meals rather than 1-2 larger meals. Although I am just learning all of this myself, if I can be of more help or support feel free to pm me.
  16. I have a 12 year old Bassett. We are working hard right now on getting her healthy (see below). This morning when I woke up her left hind leg was jutting out intermittently, like a spasmodic kicking motion. It has decreased in the hour and half since then. Is this something that I should see a vet right away for? If not, how long do I wait? How much of this is too much? I would just call my vet and ask them but they usually just say bring her in. The main assistant there who usually answers the phone always has a tone that conveys - "you know you call us way too much, you're a bother." I try to be as polite to her as I can but when I'm stressing about my dear dog I just don't want to deal with her. Thanks so much for any advice. We are feeding her upright with a home-made liver-friendly diet because we recently discovered she may have megaesophagus. We are working to help her regain her lost weight which, especially in the last few days, seems to be working. She has more energy and looks better. She has poor control of her hind legs and is on Prednisone and Gabapentin because the vet thought that there was a problem with the signal from her spine to her hind legs. Her hind legs are also very wobbly. She lacks a lot of muscle there. She has a heart problem that has been stable for about three years.
  17. Thank you all for your replies. I have a few questions: Is your reason for switching a reflection on Hey Andrew? Do you know what that is going to be? Can you direct me to any info? I was wondering if there was any possibility that it might be in the same vein, or hopefully as well done, as their video teaser for The Greek Alphabet Code Cracker. That was great.
  18. This summer my ds - 7 learned the Greek alphabet with me. He loved it and asked to study Greek. I've looked into the recommendations and, frankly, they don't look like fun to me. (I'll be studying right along with him.) Hey Andrew and Elementary Greek samples both look like just repetitive fill-in-the-blanks, with not a lot of variety. Am I correct? or is this an adult view and perhaps he will really like them? Normally, I wouldn't concern myself so much with issues of "how fun it is," but he and I were learning the alphabet for a class in which he had hoped to learn more Greek. It turned out to not be that sort of class. So, while he was disappointed he was a good sport about it. That was when he asked about learning it for this school year. He is really looking forward to it and I don't want this next attempt to be another disappointment for him. I want to reward his efforts and encourage his enthusiasm. Also, if you know the lowercase Greek letters, would the following be a good idea or not? Also, which do you prefer? The Greek alphabet Code Cracker or A Greek Hupogrammon: A Beginner's Copybook for the Greek Alphabet with Pronunciations along with Greek Alphabetarion: A Primer for Teaching How to Read, Write & Pronounce Ancient & Biblical Greek I am open to any other suggestions. Last question: will it be a bother that we learned the historic koine pronunciation? Thanks for any help.
