  1. Great, when you check out Villanova, I will be anxious to hear your opinion. I heard the food is the best at Villanova, however, the mom did not want to send her kid there because freshmans live *In* the cafeteria. So, find out if they still board freshmans in the cafeteria. Are you visiting Penn State at State College, PA or is there a satellite campus around Philly you are going to visit? So exciting!!
  2. Maybe he can get 50% 4-yr scholarship??? My niece was a fraction off of Merit scholarship (even less than your ds) and received a 4-yr scholarship at 50%.
  3. Wow, I cannot thank you ladies enough. All these ideas and advice are things I did not know! Every post was very helpful! I am glad I asked because I think I can sleep again 🙂 Roadrunner said: Roadrunner this was my thought exactly, hence why I was asking my question. I was concerned that the CC Calculus class would move too fast for him. One CC uses the ACCUPLACER and the other CC uses ALEKS placement test. I did not know these placement test are not timed. I will definitely look into it at our CC. Regentrude.....THIS eases my mind. He is definitely solid with the prealg/alg concepts, as he is going over it again this year w/pre-calc. Thank you ladies for your sage advice and information. ETA: I am liking the idea when ds takes the placement exam, and for reason doesn't do well, then he can take Pre-calc at CC. I will just have to wait and see. I was too concerned that he would take something twice in high school with a transcripts that mainly shows honors english and science and advance math so I am trying to present ds as an honor student through his transcript. Thank you, again.
  4. I am looking for options about calculus class in 11 th grade. Background--- ds has been taking Jann In Texas classes since 7th grade. He is doing Prec-calc this year and next year he is ready for Calculus. We are looking at Community College for the Calculus. The CC says he needs to take a placement exam to do Calculus. This year he took the PSAT exam. Even though he does really well with math, he is not a math whiz. He doesn't do well with timed tests. Last year, he did the PSAT test and he never finished the math portion. He still did rather well despite not finishing the math portion. Ds said he felt he did better this year on the PSAT, because he finished most of the math test except for 1 test. We are waiting patiently for the scores for this year to come out :) I am all worried about him taking the college placement exam and whether or not he will pass to be able to take Calculus at CC. So to ease my mind I am looking at other options while we wait until February/March to take the placement exams (because in his pre-calc class he will be further along in the calculus portion of the class.) I also think he would do better taking Calculus all year than a quick semester of Calculus. I noticed that some students will take reg./honors chemistry or biology and then later take AP Biology or AP Chemistry. So I was wondering if it would look bad on his transcripts if he took a high school Calculus course in 11th grade and then Calculus at the CC for 12th grade? If that is not good, maybe he should just take AP Calculus class instead because he could spend all year to practice the test before taking it......... Your thought???
  5. This. It's your answer staring you in the face :) Follow your dream. It will take you places you could never imagine :)
  6. Yeah so the the first week of September I found a bad one for ds. I was hoping it would get better. It is the most boring Honors Chemistry with lots of busy work!! This week we had a meeting with the Dean of Students. We will see if this gets better. Such a shame that poor ds has to put up with a incompetent teacher because Online service does not allow refunds after the first week, only a 50% credit. Well we are not coming back this after this year. We are definitely NOT going to use this particular online source ever again.
  7. Isn't one of the new job market is being a communications person on a company website? They write posts for the company's facebook, twitter, etc account?
  8. So sorry to hear this. DH's sister is Chief Pathologist. If you want a second opinion as you go forward, let me know, we get her phone number for you! I pray that this is another misdiagnosed thing............
  9. Great! Thanks RootAnn. This give me more confidence to try LuLu...
  10. Why is everyone complaining that CS is folding into KDP and saying that the KDP print books are worse than CS. See I don't understand this stuff. Is CS being used in KDP printing? So is CS still printing the books? I'm so confused.
  11. Any self-publish authors here? Did you use Create Space and are you moving over to Kindle or trying other self-publishing places like LuLu??? My son self published a book a couple of years ago with CreateSpace. Now they are dissolved into Amazon Kindle?? Ds wrote another novel and wants to publish again. I am at a lost. I have been reading that the Amazon/Kindle has poor print quality books. I am thinking of trying LuLu. Thoughts?
  12. I had piriformis syndrome from my pregnancy. I was about to go to physical therapy, but then my baby came early at 38 weeks. The pain was gone after birth!
  13. You Go MOM! Hang in there! It's still summer, another couple of days and school will start. It's like de-schooling... when you switch public school to homeschool and you take a month off just to do nothing to get them into homeschooling mode. He needs time to do the change....and it started something with the piano.
  14. Sometimes I was wondering about doing this diet. I know the AIP helped me tremendously, just by eliminating dairy and gluten. But for some reason I sneeze after a meal a couple of times in the row, I keep wondering if it is something I ate. After AIP, and then adding histamine diet, there won't be much for me to eat.
  15. Yes, AND No. I noticed about the skin color, too. Many years ago, at my cousin's wedding, I noticed my great Uncle in his 80's was looking pale at the wedding, and he died in that year. However.......a couple of months ago my Mom was looking like that AND was deathly ill. At one point, the doctor's weren't sure she was going to make it through the week. Maybe because of the care of the rehab and hospital and lots and lots prayers.......she pulled through and now is very vibrant and healthy looking despite that fact she is still in the nursing home healing a bed sore and trying to walk again. My Mom was living alone and driving herself around back in February to this life now. So maybe it is more of an indication that something inside of them needs healing, but what exactly I do not know. ((((hugs))))
  16. ooooh, Please post your experience at Magnolia's! Texas is too far away for us. We have been to Paula Deen's in Savannah and Walburgers in Boston. We always went during the week and odd times for meals to get in quicker. I think we waited 30 mins for Paula Deen's.
  17. We used Ancients last year. I used the Study and Teaching Guide but modified it for my ds. It is very easy to give a quiz or test with the Study Guide. You can give essay questions, vocab words, easily make up multiply choice. Basically, anything you want. What I had my son do was write atleast 1 paragraph summary of a Chapter of what he found most interesting. You can easily do 3 chapters a week that way. However, sometimes things got crazy and he did 2 chapters a week. We ended up skipping some chapters because these chapters are sometimes sooo long and drawn out and on top of that has lots info in a chapter. Then I added for the week some who names for him to write down (listed in the book with answers) and 1 or 2 questions from the study guide. You really can't go wrong with getting the Study Guide. It has everything you need with questions and answers and even how to help them with essay questions. Also, I cannot stress enough about this book---atleast Ancients, has material in there that I would not want my High School student to know. Of course, at present I cannot remember. But it was so bad that I decided to use something else for history this year. In some parts, it was way too graphic then it needed to be. My ds is more interested in STEM and so history is just "check the box" for us.
  18. Hi, Last year, ds was in 9th grade. He never took a standardized test. I found a homeschool friendly private school that took homeschoolers for PSAT testing. I did not prep him last year because I wanted him to just get used to doing a test in a strange place before we buckled down for him to practice the test. This year, he is doing Memoria Press PSAT Prep class and will take the PSAT again in 10th grade this year. Overall, he did pretty well on the PSAT. He only finished about half the math test and still managed to get a decent score for a 9th grader. The other thing that helped him get used to the test was checking out the memes after the test on instagram, where so many students made fun of PSAT/SATs and how ridiculously hard or easy or strange were the questions. It made him feel "normal." If you have them check out the memes PLEASE stay with child because some are inappropriate....just warning you. I went through some of them before showing it to him, so by-pass the bad ones as I showed him the funny ones. This is what we are doing so far. It's still a work in progress........To keep my sanity, too, I am doing one year at a time to figure out if should do anything more regarding prep for SATs.
  19. Hmmmm, we do not have the "random people" sending random messages unless you mean the Kolbe Staff sending out e-mails in Schoology. The tech staff can be iffy, but most of the time they are quick to respond. Have you done the Tech Support room, yet? They are open 9;30-4:30 EST tomorrow. My beef is the Student Orientation.......talk about busy work.....49 min video on just the topic of time management!!! It's down right riduculous! We did Kolbe for one classlast year, biology and my son really liked it and had a quiet year. Kolbe pushes waaaay too much for their online groups, trying to make it like High School "school." The teachers are fine but we are not going back to Kolbe next year. Kolbe Admin stuff is riduculous......it is almost demeaning, like homeschoolers are stupid or something. I am crossing my fingers it will be a quiet year again...like I said the teachers are fine.
  20. HSLDA has free transcripts to download that you just plug numbers in but it won't calculate the GPA. https://hslda.org/content/highschool/academics.asp#transcripts
  21. Hi Garga, My son is in the same class as yours, I think. Which did you decide? Here is the 60$ https://www.amazon.com/Texas-Instruments-Ti-84-Graphing-calculator/dp/B00XOLOQMK/ref=sr_1_2?s=lawn-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1532354691&sr=8-2&keywords=graphing+calculator+ti84+plus What is the difference with this one at $112 https://www.amazon.com/Texas-Instruments-84PLCE-TBL-1L1/dp/B01NC0PLBO/ref=sr_1_1?s=lawn-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1532354691&sr=8-1&keywords=graphing+calculator+ti84+plus It looks like the more expensive one has more bells & whisltes????
  22. Yeah, my dh doesn't do lesson plans. He just wings it. It is only a 10 week fun course. He has ideas and questions in his head to start the class off, then the class takes a life of it own.
  23. Thank you! My dh wants to teach it in a coop setting so we will check out the Kreeft books. This looks good :)
  24. I was wondering if anybody had any resources for doing an Intro to Philosophy for class?
  25. Second the askPauline.com website. It has everything you need to homeschool in PA in one website. askPauline.com/hs/homeschoolevallist.html
