Thanks! This year made me a little more nervous. I didn't want him to be behind for high school and wanted to try to get some things out of the way. I don't think I'm ready for high school, but it's approaching quickly. :001_smile:

I forgot to say thanks for your kind words. I do try to give him a few things he enjoys to balance out the day. It seems to help.

Thank you! We worked quite a bit last year on becoming more independent. It was a struggle, and some things must be done with me, but I try to give him a few subjects that he can do solo so he feels more in control. It has helped us in many ways.

We are doing U.S. history this year. I'm including a section in our notebook on the presidents and a section on each state. I have a book on the presidents, so my son will write a simple essay on each president. For the states, I'll have him do a similar essay using the internet for his resources. We will also review the map of the U.S. and the capitals. HTH!

Logic: Traditional Logic or Critical Thinking U.S. history books (We have only done Mind Benders and CT book 1 in the past, so I'm not sure if he's ready for TL, but I like the fact that I wouldn't have to teach it. I'd get the DVD.) Math: Lial's Introductory Algebra History: America the Story of US book and video, Presidents by Carter Smith, U.S. geography (He would outline the text, watch video, and I'd like to have him do a U.S. President section in his notebook and a section for each state. Grammar: R&S English 8 Composition: R&S and across the subjects as laid out by SWB in her audio lectures. (I haven't listened to these yet, but I've read TWM so I'm sure they are pretty much the same. My son is a natural writer.) Vocabulary: Wordly Wise 8 and VfCR A (We used WW last year, but I'd like to do VfCR, so I decided to use both and just do one of each a year, instead of 2 of VfCR. Literature: Painless Poetry, SL readers for Core 100, literary analysis hopefully explained thoroughly by SWB in her audio lecture! Science: PH CiA and maybe DIVE to go along with. Computer Skill: Let Us C and a Apple program for making apps. (My son loves anything computer related. This isn't really school to him.) Bible: daily Bible reading, memorize so verses that deal with things he struggles with, and read a few books that I've picked out: Do Hard Things, Start Here, and some Maxwell books. I don't make this part of schooling, but I think it's a good way to start his morning. Foreign Language: GSWS and Visual Link Spanish Art: Internet study using list in WTM (He will write a paragraph about each artist and put it in his notebook, after looking up some of their artwork online or in the books we already own.) Music: Guitar lessons and internet study using list in WTM (He will do this like he does art, but he will find music online to listen to. I love Pandora!) PE: Karate and he uses my stepper while watching TV if he can't get outside due to allergies or weather. He also swims when it's warm. I posted this in the main K-8 board, and I got no responses. I'm hoping someone here can give me their opinions. Any thoughts?

Ours is the same color. I have red curtains and other accessories to keep it fun, but the wall color keeps it calming.

I read post #10. I also have the sample from Pattie. I don't see anything but the one for 5th grade. After looking at what is covered according to an article that I think was written on the blog, I don't think my son would need any of these but possibly the 8th grade books. I wish the books for 9-12 were going to be out soon. I think we stay ahead of SWB. I wish she had started all of this sooner, or I'd of had my son later! :)

Will WWS 5-8 from SWB all be available this winter? My son is going into 8th grade, and I'm still trying to decide on a writing program. We have used R&S from 3rd up, and he's a great writer. He can do paragraphs and essays well. He needs to learn more about longer writing assignments, and I think he needs to learn to plan more. I was thinking of IEW, but I don't like the price tag or want to frustrate him in any way with writing since that's one of the easy things right now.

My son just finished 7th grade. We use BCM and pre algebra from Lials. Since BCM was a lot of review, he finished it early so we covered the Pre Algebra book also. We have used many different math programs for 1-6: ABeka, Saxon, Horizon, MUS. I certainly don't recommend doing that, but I was trying to find the right fit for him. He actually enjoyed the Lial books this year, so that was a first!

I'm guessing that ABeka would be weaker in Algebra than Lials. Most of the topics in pre algebra are covered in BCM. However, ABeka pre algebra is designed to follow Abeka 7 math so it's probably not covering the same topics. Most elementary math books say they cover algebra and geometry. They do, but not in the depth that one would associate with an algebra or geometry course. I think it just depends on what you are looking for. Since you are using another program and want to just have one as backup, I'd go with BCM since it's a lot cheaper. I have other reasons for not wanting to use ABeka, but I won't share those here! :)

I haven't seen ABeka 7 math in a long time. However, I used it myself in school. If I remember correctly, ABeka is more of a review of basic math as well as consumer type math. (check book balancing, reading power meters, ect.) It does not prepare for algebra at all, unless it has been changed. BCM does cover pre algebra topics. This is all based what I experienced there, many years ago. (far too many!) If I'm wrong, please someone correct me.

Basic College Math 7th edition (2004) ISBN 0321257804 That's the one we used. It has all the answers for the odds in the back, so that's all I needed. You can find a used copy really cheap on Amazon. HTH!

Since you asked, I will give my opinion. I think it might work, but I wouldn't think it would be easy or even work well. It's hard to homeschool your own kids, so adding others in, will make it even harder. If everyone is working pt, then I'd have them do some of the subjects at their own houses daily, and then later in the afternoon, you could meet for some combined classes, like a co-op. I would not take on the responsibility of teaching 17 kids with only one other person, since you have such a variety of ages. I'm sure it's possible, but I don't think it would be done well. I couldn't do it because I'm very picky about curriculum and expect a lot from my son. Even my closest homeschooling friends, vary in their ideas of what they think is acceptable for behavior and school work. I'd homeschool my own, and if it's important to the others, then they should homeschool their own kids! This of course, is only my opinion and given only because you asked. Best of luck to you!

I recommend BCM also. If you are concerned in any way, you can also purchase pre algebra in Lial's very inexpensively and review anything needed. We actually finished BCM early this year and used pre algebra as a review. I felt like my son gained a lot of confidence this year in math. I love the layout of these textbooks, and since they are found easily used, you can't beat the price either.

Apple Airport Express is what we have, and I think what you are talking about. They work great!

I forgot to add that we did not use the CDs. My son read the lesson. If he had questions, I'd go over it with him. The book is completely self teaching. It's wonderful!

I can't compare the 2 since we've only used Lial's. However, I've spend an embarrassing about of $$ on math over the years, and for the first time, I've gotten a wonderful program with hardly any cost. I can not recommend Lial's enough. It's was the best choice I've ever made and the cheapest!
