  1. I just pulled some of my dc out of school and I have really noticed a difference in the output expectations for writing between ps and homeschool. At the end of ps 4th, my dd was expected to write a multiple page research paper. If you are doing FFL4, you will probably be way ahead in grammar, so focus on writing and math.
  2. I have never seen wheat at my Costco. Where is it at? By the flour/baking items? To the OP: I have also ordered from Waltonfeed.com and the LDS cannery online (http://store.lds.org/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product3_715839595_10557_21003_-1__195792).
  3. This was a conversation I had with dd8 when she wanted to figure out what time we needed to leave to be somewhere at 3:00 if it would take 15 minutes to get there. She said, “Mom, do you want to know how I figured it out?†“There are three things.†[she tapped her forehead with 3 fingers.] “There’s Home, School and Friends. So I go to School and then to Mr. X [the math teacher] and then to math. Then I flip through all the math problems until I get to the clock.†[she made flipping motions with her hand.] “And then I figured it out.†Is this a memory thing? A retrieval thing?
  4. I've read it lots of times. I had dd's high school education planned with WTM recs when she was 3.
  5. I printed everything in color. I store both the student book and the AK in 3-ring binders. I put the pages of the student book into page protectors so that I could use it for more than one kid and my dc do their work with markers.
  6. http://home.pct.edu/~evavra/kiss/wb/PBooks/index.htm This is the page to get the actual workbooks. From the home page, you can find other information, but I assume this is what you have questions about. I use KISS for two of my dc. I decided to start with the grade level books, since they were easier to figure out than the master books at the bottom of the page. For dd10, I am using the 6th grade book, since that is the closest to her grade. I downloaded the Level One book and the IG, which is called the AK (Analysis Key). I printed both books, but you would probably only need to print the student book. Once dd is finished with the Level One book, then we will move on to the Level Two Sixth Grade book and so on. Currently the sixth grade books end at Level 4, so after we finish that, we will move on to the Master books starting at Level 5. As for a typical day, there is not much to say. We only do one page, since we are not really in a hurry and dd's ps grammar education was minimal. There is information about each exercise in the AK, along with some guidance for the instructor. We are using KISS in addition to MCT, and it has been working well.
  7. Can I have one book for each science discipline but have them organized so that I can either focus on one subject for the entire year or do the first 10 chapters or so of each book in one year and then go back again and pick up where we left off the next year?
  8. My ds was just like yours really wanted to read. I had him alternate these videos every other day and do starfall for 20 minutes. It only took him a few weeks to be ready for BOB books.
  9. Zaccaro is definitely aimed at 4th and 5th graders. In each section the problems start out easy and then get progressively harder until you are at Einstein level. The advantage is that you don't have to make up the problems yourself.
  10. Grammar: KISS/MCT Spelling: SP Writing: WWS Latin: Latina Christiana Logic: Mind Benders Science: PHSE History: TOG Y2 Music: piano Art: outsourced
  11. We do this! All of my dc have a different thing that they get points for and 25 points can be exchanged for either a pixie stick or one chore. I am amazed at how hard they work on their vocabulary or their math facts just to get out of unloading the dishwasher once.
  12. We had this same problem, but I can't help you out too much because we went to WWS. We are also using this sometimes and DD loves it. You might use it for a while while you find your new writing program. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0824967712/ref=oh_o00_s00_i00_details
  13. Their website seems to indicate that they are pretty much the same.
  14. Are you looking for a sewing project that uses math or a math curriculum that uses sewing?
  15. You can get the Activity Cards on a CD for $5 from here: http://www.spellingpower.com/products/SpellingPowerUpgrades.aspx You could certainly use them as a stand alone activity.
  16. I have used it a few times and only had good experiences.
  17. I have only used Spelling Power, so that is the only thing that I can tell you about. It is not workbook based, so if you want to continue with that method, then just ignore what I have tell you. I have used this with two of my dd's, one is a great speller and the other terrible. So with the great speller, we can quickly go through some words and she works on them for a few minutes and then she is done. For my struggling speller, it is much more intensive. She spends a lot of time working on a few words and doing all of the activities that SP suggests to make sure the words stick. But it does work with her when we work hard on it. The other thing to know about SP is that if you are looking to teach rules, this might not be your best program. The word list will tell you the rule, and then you will have to make sure that they understand the rule and how it applies to the words. Besides a statement of the rule, you won't get a lot of help. But that may not matter to you. So if I have turned you off from SP with all of that, the other program that has been on my radar in case SP fails us is Megawords. But I have not used it, so I can't help you except to suggest a search on the boards.
  18. This is fascinating. We are on Week 8 and I haven't used the IG once. I obviously need to get my sample out and see what I have been missing.
  19. Keep going with the reading, because if he can hear the difference, it won't affect that. But I would get him evaluated by the child find program in your area. You can call your local district to find out about it. They should do a speech evaluation for free.
  20. That is good to know. The good and bad thing about EPGY is that it moves so fast that she will finish 6 in the next few months, and likely still won't be ready to go back to AoPS. I am hoping that if I add in another text that she will be a little bit older as well as more solid in math when we try AoPS again.
  21. I really like AoPS, too. I think that dd10 is young enough that we could spend a year doing another prealgebra and then try it again. So I haven't completely given up on it.
  22. She is in 6. I have been glad to have EPGY, because it has become our stand-by.
