  1. My life is crazy. It's always been soap opera worthy. I've always had the craziest things that probably no body believes happen to me.
  2. Primal allows dairy, red wine, dark chocolate, fattier cuts of meat and doesn't have a cow if you have occasional rice or potatoes.
  3. We have almost quit using "curriculum" Reading: I tailored books that fit each child's interests and we read and discuss those. For my daughter, we do a discussion twice a that includes breakfast/tea/lunch out (or bake something for a home tea) and some sort of shopping/beauty treatment or a mother/daughter movie night where we watch the movie version. My son is currently reading "The Hobbit" and playing a video game that correlates with each chapter. Writing: Legends of Druidawn on Fridays!!!!! DD also journals Science: My daughter is doing Kitchen Chemistry using a variety of library books and some "curriculum". She loves it. The best is once a week she watches a Good Eats on YouTube and then cooks the recipe. We do a daily nature walk/hike (Doubles as dog walking time and I take turns so each kid gets some alone time with mom). History and Geography: We watch a movie or documentary most days and discuss it. We use Teach w/movies but don't limit ourselves. Sometimes we do it during school day and other times as family. Other: We play games a few times a week We do Cross Fit for Kids at home They do Scout badge work daily We work on crafts while we watch our movie. We listen to talk radio a lot and discuss. Lots of field trips Co-op for classes (more social than fun) Extracurriculars: Scouts, Dance, Soccer, 4-H, for DD; Scouts, Football, Baseball, BJJ, and Chess Club for DS. Swordfighting class as a family.
  4. So far, I think it is enough. DS loves it and is retaining a lot. Our only issue is the projects need DH's help and DH isn't home that much.
  5. My kids are slim and athletically built. OF course, they are very active. In my main homeschool group here, most seem to be slim and athletic but a few are plump -mostly in that "baby fat" kind of way. In another group that I belong to where the families seem a bit more "stereotypical" in their socialization skills, the kids tend to be a lot of plumper. In public elementary, we had quite a few plump, several fat and a couple severely obese kids. One kid was 160 pounds in Kindergarten!!!!! In all cases, the kids who were overweight came from the families that on free/reduced lunch and brought extra money to spend on ice cream. baked goods, chips, and extra chocolate milk. The only family I know who wasn't F/R lunch that had overweight kids in the school was a family that ate out every single night of the week and did no activities. Both parents were overweight too. We had to turn away a 4'10", 156 pound kid that wanted to play football on my husband's team because he was not in the weight regulations for that league. We've had some really overweight kids on the baseball team that are probably considered obese medically. Regardless of schooling/background, I see "chunkiness with the girls more than boys and usually I see more plumping after they get to middle school. Girls here are starting to get "skinny fat" or at least getting a belly. On the otherhand, when we see a kid who is really overweight beyond husky/chunky/plump, it tends to be boys. All the "OMG. What are his parents thinking" obese kids we know have been African-American boys but I've seen "fat" in all ethnic groups and I do see a casual correlation of economic class and weight.
  6. How in the heck would you do that? As a coach, you have no idea what size players the other team has. You could have an entire team of 75 pounders and the other team could all be 120+ because teams are by locality. You would have to know the weight of every kid of every team and no what position they play (and most play more than one position at this age to get a feel for what they are best at).
  7. Our homeschool group is down in numbers. The biggest loss seems to be in the middle school and high school ages. Some are going to public or private school now. Some are doing duel enrollment or have really ramped up academics and other things and have dropped the group because of time. Others are feeling the effects of the economy and quit because of the drive into town was costing too much. Then you have those that moved, switched to another group that was more/less religious or closer or better age groups or because they don't like so and so, etc.
  8. I've gone down two sizes myself. I have lost: 5 inches around navel 2 inches of hips 3/4 inch off hips 1/2 inch off thighs and 1 inch off my bra band measurement (thankfully not cup yet lol)
  9. I hike with my daughter for 2 -2.5 miles a day (4-5 times a week) at a very, very slow pace lol. It's our morning bonding time/walk the dog time. I do Cross Fit 3 times a week (very modified and I still come in last lol) w/extra class to show me how to do lifts 2X a week. and I'm doing a Primal Blueprint Diet (but not perfectly lol -have had a few cheats and overdo some of the once in awhiles lol)
  10. SO you can see -While me weight hasn't changed, my body composition has. In the first picture, I was weigh over what is considered healthy in my belly fat. After 6 weeks of working out/dieting, I am just within healthy regs. I intend to improve it even more.
  11. I'm attempting to show a picture lol of me at same weight but two different body measurements. This is why one person can think they are overweight and another not at the same exact weight! So if this works right: This is me at 154 pounds right after the WTM conference.
  12. Exactly! Tackle football is already dangerous without adding in a kid more than twice the size of the smallest and 30% larger than the largest kid! This kid's BMI is in the obesity category and believe me, it's not "muscle." He can play flag football somewhere. He can play baseball, basketball, or most other sports that don't involve player to player contact. My son competes in BJJ, and has to weigh in for every meet. This is to make sure he competes with someone in his own weight class. Occasionally, they will let one fight up a class Even then the weight range is 10 pounds. A kid on the high end will beat a kid on the low end a majority of the time. The only other factors that can make a difference is skill (if one kid just got belt and other is close to being the next belt) and sometimes age. **Note this is DS's first year playing contact football because he was under the weight standards until now. We spent the whole summer working on helping him gain weight (and gain safely-not just eat a bunch of junk lol).
  13. It's 24.9 which is "normal" but if I gain a pound (which i can do easily during PMS), then I am 25 BMI which is overweight! For women, a waist measurement of 35 inches (89 centimeters) or more indicates an unhealthy concentration of belly fat and a greater risk of problems such as heart disease, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes. This is even with a healthy BMI. I just got below this last week!!! I wish I knew how to upload my pics of the changes I've made since the conference!
  14. I didn't read it that way and I don't think Wendy did either. LOL By Marine Corps Standards-I am ONE pound under regs for weight but over for body fat. BY Medical Standards/BMI-I am ONE Pound under by weight By Met Life, I'm okay for a large frame, 7 pounds overweight for medium frame, and 18 pounds overweight for a small frame (**NOTE-I'm a small frame) BY the Devine and Miller formulas, I'm 23 pounds overweight! By the Miller formula, I'm 19 pounds overweight (This is my target: 135 -where I think I look best). By the Hamwi formula, I'm 25 pounds overweight.
  15. You're too kind. I grew up being very, very skinny. At age 27, I was struggling to keep the 104 minumum for the Marines. I still have skinny (but flabby) arms and legs. I'm not overly hippy. I am an Apple. At the conference, I was 154 pounds. I had a 39" belly!!!! Today, I'm still 154 pounds but have a 34" belly. (You see my pics of before and after 6 weeks of Cross Fit!!!!). However, I'm still overweight by BMI and by body weight standards. Plus I can't go without my Spanx! Clothing can really make a huge difference. I can look "fat" or "average" depending on what I am wearing. Of course, "average" in the South is still overweight LOL.
  16. THe #60 pound kid was able to go down a level to the 8-9 yo because he was 10. My husband asked if the bigger kid could go up to the next level (12-13) and was told, he could go up if he were 11. This kid is 10. We don't necessarily agree w/ the rules but to be a coach, he has to play by the rules. As it is, the 3 kids that are overweight are not be given pads until the next weigh in and not allowed to tackle in practice. They can do the conditioning workouts, etc. No kid will be given equipment until they come to at least 3 practices and gone through conditioning anyway. All kids are supposed to be weigh-in before every game. If it were flag, it wouldn't matter. However, it's tackle and it is unsafe to have a kid who is 4"10 and 156 pounds pitted against a kid who is barely 75. I'm already worried about the 125 kids against my 75 pound kid. Furthermore, when someone is this heavy, you have to worry about other health issues. I'm overweight and this kid weighs more than I do and I am 8 inches taller. He is more than twice my sons weight at the same height! My son barely made the weigh-in. We knew it was coming and we knew he was under the minimum, so we worked on his weight all summer. The weight is listed in the brochure that came out in May. Registration was in late July and it was made clear that there would be a weigh-in. The weigh-in was a week ago and there were 2 practices since. He also has to deal with weigh-ins for BJJ and for Scouts (too small for some Scout trips). I don't know of any flag football other than the homeschool league and I wouldn't recommend anyone to that league. I'm sureif she asked the parks and recs, they could point her in a good direction. I just don't get why yell at the coach. He doesn't make the rules. He doesn't even do the weigh-ins. The parks and rec center does the weigh-ins. They told her the deal last week and offered a refund. Perhaps, she thought she could just ignore that and bring him and the coach wouldn't say anything. On the bright side, the parents love him. This is his first year coaching contact football and he was nervous about it. Most of the team has been together for years but the old coach didn't come back. They have been telling him that he's the first coach to actually explain how to play football to the kids! He also does all the sprints, flutter kicks, etc twice -once before they show up (and the early birds see this) and again with the team. Apparantly, that is unusual.
  17. Sigh. My DH is VOLUNTEERING to coach football for 10-11 year olds through the city league. The kids have to weigh between 75-120 to play. The very first practice is a weigh-in. If you are within 5 pounds, you get two weeks to lose the weight. DH had to cut one kid for being overweight (156# -under 5 foot) and one for being underweight (60#). The weight limit is on the sign up. It was explained to the parent that child can't play, why they can't play, and that they could get a refund. Parent brought child in to play today. They were told he couldn't play and thus, child started crying. THe mom has a fit and says that it's my husband's fault, he has to let her son practice until she gets a refund, etc. He kept trying to explain that he doesn't make the rules. Honestly, we're not talking about a few pounds. He's more than 30 pounds over the limit Really, I can't believe people!
  18. I felt it in Raleigh. I also felt an aftershock about an hour ago. I thought I just felt another one but haven't seen anything on it yet.
  19. Facebook is funny -some of the people who are nicest to me on Facebook are people who wouldn't have given me time of day back in high school. There has been a few that I have gotten together with for a lunch and we have a wonderful time. -Some of my closest friends (and a few family) from long ago have defriended me or have it so that I can't post on their wall, see their posts, etc or never accepted my friend request. (NOTE: there has never been an issue or anything more losing touch over time) Then again, people in my real life act strange too. I often wonder what the heck is wrong with me that generates such strange behaviors.
  20. I'm like that only my house doesn't show it. I spend more time thinking about how to streamline it than doing it. I also have to clean in a certain order and if something is making a barrier to my next step, I can't skip. I am like a robot that keeps walking into the wall.
  21. Mine is the former dining room too. I'd like to put up French doors to hide it though but at the rate home improvement projects get done here, I'll be lucky to have them up by the time my future grand chidren graduate.
  22. I"m a phone-a-phobic too. I don't know if I'm extroverted or introverted. I'm loud, brassy, and I love to talk and enjoy being with people. I am way more comfortable on stage or with new people than most people I know. However, I'm also happy to be alone and I've never been one to "seek" social events.
