  1. I used to dream of going on a tropical vacation but no more. My husband has been all over and he says every big destination city is the same (boring). With the price of gas and the environmental implications of air travel, it's just not for me.
  2. I sometimes wear my fleece pajamas when I go outside in the morning to feed the animals. I always change afterward in case customers come to the house.
  3. I've read it and it didn't do anything for me. If you need validation, it's a good book. We just moved across Canada to an old farmhouse to market garden and raise most of our own food so I guess I qualify as a radical homemaker.
  4. Google Britta+Harry Potter. She has a website that shows the parties she's thrown (Halloween etc). Her Harry Potter one is pretty good.
  5. Keep the grass mowed short and/or get guineas to eat the ticks.
  6. I can't find the Ross King book on Amazon.ca and the DK book is a bit of a put off with the nun on the cover. Still looking...
  7. I just started making tortillas (no press required) and they are so easy, cheap and taste miles above what I used to buy that I'll never buy them again.
  8. I'm writing our art curriculum for next year and need some full page pictures of paintings. I want a book that has quite a few famous painters with several of their works in full page colour. More photos less writing. Does this exist? In a pinch I can just buy wall calendars for each artist but that's going to get pricey.
  9. I voted other because although I have a general idea of what we're going to do, dd1 is learning so fast that I wouldn't be surprised if she was ready for something else by September. For example; a month ago I started the end of year report that we have to submit in June and said "dd1 prefers short stories but is starting to read novels. We'll work on her reading stamina over the summer". I had to change that entire statement because she read 5 novels last week. I'll finalize our purchases in August!
  10. Are we squirreling money away so we don't have to work once we hit retirement age? No. We have moved to a rural property with plans to make it as self sufficient as possible which will in turn lower our bills. We are setting up a farm business and hopefully that will keep us busy indefinitely. Once our bill as decreased and we have a good money flow sure I'll save some money up in case of disability but we'll still be running the business (hopefully).
  11. We ditched it completely at that point. Dd1 was bored with it and she was only 3.5 so it wasn't like we were super concerned. We stopped all reading instruction and by the time she was four, it all clicked and she just started reading really well. I think once they get the basics, going back to just reading books does the job.
  12. All the research I have read, indicates that the only time that a cut might be warranted would be in the case of a forceps or vacuum deliver (to widen the entrance). It definitely does not prevent a tear. This isn't new information either. I remember reading a news report that came out at least 15 years ago saying this was the case and there have been several since.
  13. http://organicgardening.about.com/od/startinganorganicgarden/a/lasagnagarden.htm It's also called sheet mulching.
  14. I just moved to Nova Scotia from Ontario last year. You're right about the prices. The loonie has been high for a couple of years now and we still pay through the roof for stuff. So annoying.
  15. Thanks, I'll check those links out. My daughter just turned 5 but she's doing work several grades ahead. Her reading and comprehension is about grade 6. She still has a lot of age appropriate interests so I'm looking for an assortment of links.
  16. Dd1 could use the computer independently at 18 months and was Googling stuff by 3. Dd2 started around 2.5 but can't Google yet.
  17. I wear the same group of colours all year round because they match my colouring. I wouldn't wear more summery colours in the summer because those colours don't work well with my skin tone, hair colour etc.
  18. You can definitely repot. It would help to know what your seedlings are. Some stuff can go out sooner than others.
  19. You don't need to use Mel's Mix. Just buy a good quality screened topsoil and supplement it with some manure. Or you could go lasagna route and make your beds out of newspaper, straw, leaves etc and let that break down, maybe topping it with a little soil.
  20. Every now and then I find something fun only to find out they don't ship to Canada. For example "Top Secret Adventures". My daughter would love that, but they don't ship here. I'm looking for stuff like that, the supplemental fun stuff. It's hard to find via Google so I was hoping you guys could spam me with links if you've got them. Any subject, any age. Thanks!
  21. Nice. She's not an attention seeking liar. She'll be getting a degree in sociology after highschool Her research makes perfect sense in the scope of her career interests.
  22. She's fine. I was that child and I'm an introvert. It's not anti-social (hate that term). Some people just don't need people around as much as extroverts do. As an introvert I also need serious downtime after socializing. People are draining.
  23. My oldest was a nudist until she was around 3.5. Her sister started wearing clothes at 2.5. The nudity thing really helps with potty training. They were both out of diapers by age 2.
