  1. I have to say- this is one of my favorite threads yet. Love it!:001_wub:
  2. My Mom & my sister both have had detached retinas and both have had no further issues with their vision. They are fine now.
  3. I don't know if this would be helpful or not... I keep a pretty neat & tidy house and one thing that is immensely helpful in keeping it that way is we do several pick ups throughout the day. Before we go upstairs at 8:30am to get dressed and start school, the living room & dining room must be picked up in a neat & tidy fashion. While we are upstairs getting dressed they make their beds and do their daily straightening of their room. Then we go to the school room/play room. Once we are finished, the room must be picked up before they can go outside to play. And we do another pick up of the living room right before Daddy gets home. Doing multiple small cleanups during the day prevents things from ever getting to out of hand.
  4. Yorktown, maybe? We're going in September so I'll be watching this thread with interest!
  5. I definitely don't think punching students is okay BUT I've been that teacher who was cornered against a wall by a student who was much bigger than I was- and I can honestly say I don't blame her very much.
  6. How about visiting once a month at their home but having them come visit you once a month? That way the financial burden of visiting is shared by both and you guys still get 2 visits a month?
  7. My Mary, who is also 7yo, sounds a lot like your daughter- she's definitely not a consumer- she's happy with what she has. While this is a lovely trait it can make it difficult to shop for her on birthdays or Christmas. Last year for her 7th birthday we got her a lap loom. I second the idea of audio books with a CD player- she really enjoys that. What about a hook & loop potholder kit? Faber-Castille has some neat paint sets. This probably sounds totally lame but Mary loves stuffed animals- we splurged on a Fur-Real White Cat for her & she loved it. What about an embroidery set? Does she like building kits? We got Mary the KaleidoGears for Easter and she enjoys that a lot. Zoobs are a big hit in our house too. Does she like to cook? Magic Cabin has a Junior Bake Set that has real baking items that are just child size- bunt pans, cookie sheets, loaf pans, etc. I think the whole set is around $20.
  8. My 7yo girl & 3yo girl have shared a room for the last 18 months. There are certainly some nights when they are awake, talking, far to late but you know what? I've really seen their relationship bloom in the last year and I'm so glad we have them together. Nathan is lobbying hard to have Lyra sleep in his room with him- he really wants a room buddy! Probably when she gets closer to 2yo, we'll let her sleep in his room for a few months but the plan is to move her in with the big girls after that. I would not put a 2yo & 3yo together and expect them to get any sleep. I would put the 9yo & 3yo together and keep the 2yo separate for a while longer. As to the lego creations- Could you install some of those floating type shelves on the walls to hold them? High enough for the 9yo to reach but to high for the 3yo? I have a friend with a 10yo and he shares his room with his 7yo,5yo & 3yo brothers. They have 2 sets of bunkbeds but the rule is that *NO ONE* is allowed on the 10yo's bunkbed but him. He has some shelving up there to keep his special projects away from the youngers- could you do something like that?
  9. Thanks guys! If anyone else has wisdom to share, I'd love to hear it!
  10. I have a new-to-homeschooling friend who really wants a curriculum that lends itself to combining different ages the way Tapestry does. Is My Father's World set up to encourage that or no? She would have a 5th grader and rising 3rd grader.
  11. I've looked into joining CC for the previous 2 years but just didn't think it was enough to be a full curriculum- for either History or Science. This year my friend is starting her own, small, not-for-profit CC group and we will be joining. I plan to continue using Tapestry for History & Nancy Larson Science. I view CC as a supplement- there just isn't enough there to count as an entire History program. That's just my 2 cents- I love History & one of my undergraduate degrees is in History so it is a major focus of our schooling. For someone who doesn't feel as strongly, CC might be enough for History. So, my opinion is to use CC as a History Guide.
  12. Semper Fi from another Marine! I am sure he will do fine- write him lots of letters!
  13. I ordered some of mine in June, some in March & a little bit this month!
  14. We have a refrigerator in our garage & use it to store sodas, milk, extra butter, etc. and have never had any problem with it's ability to keep things cold. (We live in NC so it's pretty hot here but not as hot as in the deep South- It might make a difference if you lived somewhere further South.)
  15. No sleepovers here either. No way, no how, not with anyone, ever, not happening. Can you tell I feel strongly about it? :D So we're weird too.
  16. bumping for the afternoon crowd!
