  1. We have a 4-year old teacup poodle, Max. He weighs 2 1/2 pounds. He is losing the hair on the back of his hind legs. The area is completely bald. There are no sores, marks, smells, etc., just bare skin. Any ideas as to what could be causing this? It appears to be affecting both hind legs in the same pattern. I'm pretty certain it's not his shampoo or food. Thanks!
  2. I don't want to force feed my children certain ideas about the books they read and I'm not saying that anyone here wants to do that either. I may lead them to certain insights, but I think it's important for them to be able to discuss their own ideas as well. :)
  3. The recommendation is stated so students will be on the Algebra 1 level at the least. It's perfectly fine for them to be taking Algebra 2, Geometry, or some higher math. I'd say most students (at least the ones I know) taking Biology in the 9th grade have already taken Algebra 1 in either the 7th or 8th grade. HTH-
  4. The Human Endeavor book is meant to be used after Algebra/Geometry. So, if you want to complete Pre-Calc, etc., you would not use this text.
  5. I'm almost certain that Human Endeavor is not intended to be used before Elementary Algebra, so you would just go straight into Elementary Algebra. It's a book that some use in high school if the student is not going to be doing the traditional pre-calculus, etc. track.
  6. I use the text, teacher's book, and worksheets (but the wkshts really are optional). We do everything orally except on days that have a worksheet to go with the lesson and then my dd completes those. I'd suggest you order the books and then look the writing lessons over before you decide to order another program. We use another writing program, but that doesn't mean the R&S isn't adequate.
  7. You can have him do a couple of test prep exercises from a test prep book, but it really isn't necessary to spend 6 weeks preparing for a test. And, remember if he gets nervous and just doesn't do well on the test, it's ok. I was never asked to turn in any test scores in the 6 years I was there. Relax :D.
  8. I gave the CAT tests. I believe you can give them the Survey test which is much shorter than the standard. They are not difficult tests and don't require a long time to take them. You can administer them over a period of a few days if you wish. I order through Seton Home and they're about $25. Of course, if you've already paid for the ITBS you might as well just have him take it. And, don't sweat it. I'm sure he will do fine!:) HTH-
  9. It seems like every year around January I get an itch to do something different. I have a friend who says the best advice she's ever received about homeschooling was to not make a curriculum change in Jan or Feb. I think for me it's part of the winter blahs. Of course, I don't always take that advice! :D
  10. You've gotten some good advice here and I would like to share just a bit about my experience. I became involved with older guys when I should have been just hanging out at the mall (it was safe back then:)). It lead slowly but steadily into a downward spiral. I'll spare you all of the details but I will say I am very blessed to be here today. The fact that he is 18 sends a huge red flag to me. He may be a very polite and innocent young man, but you really don't know much about him and what his motives are. I know this isn't any help, but I just want you to know that I went down that road and it was absolutely horrible. Life-changing, and for awhile life-defining. I'll be praying for you and your dd.
  11. Victor Journey through the Bible is an excellent resource. My dd (11) loves looking at it.:)
  12. The first volume naturally covers more Biblical history because of the time period. I think it's really going to depend on your preference. I don't think adding a Bible curriculum would not be overkill. It also depends on what your current curriculum has covered. If you're looking for something that covers New Testament, I would definitely add something. Have you looked at the samples at her website? That may give you more of a feel of what is covered. HTH-
  13. Here is a quote from HSLDA: — In third-party custody cases (brought by a grandparent or other relative) HSLDA will provide members with defense for the portion of the case relating to home schooling. Although we do not take divorce or custody cases, we do provide a helpful packet of legal information and will, when there is an opportunity to set precedent, file an amicus brief on behalf of the home schooling parent. While they may not come and stand beside you in court, which I wouldn't want anyway since they aren't divorce attorneys, they will help if they can. And I'll say one last time that they were very helpful and I wasn't a member.
  14. I asked for advice and they spoke with me at length about my situation. Regardless of how you see it, they were very helpful. :)
  15. Toni you said: ***The biggest thing is divorce. They will not, absolutely refuse to help even a member, in a divorce hearing. Even when homeschooling is brought to the forfront of that hearing, they refuse to step up and help and to me, that's where they are needed most!! NOT in congress lobbying for ALL homeschoolers. Where did you get this information? They helped me about 7 years ago when my ex-husband made silly threats about having the courts force me to put our 2 boys in public school. They sent me a huge packet of info (court cases, etc.) and I wasn't even a member.
  16. I'd love to start running, but my lungs feel like they are freezing if I run outside during cold weather. I can't run on a treadmill. I just know I would end up in somebody's youtube video. How do you keep your lungs from feeling so cold when you run? It makes my chest hurt.
  17. I am so glad that you and your son had a good talk. Please let us know how things are going! Blessings
