  1. We did all the behavior mod stuff and it just didn't work. DD was getting ready to turn 8 and I took her to the doc. I had asked at 5 and 6 and was told to just wait it out. My back was killing me from pulling her out of bed each night. She was a very heavy sleeper. We put her on DDAVP, the nasel spray, for about 3 months and she hasn't wet the bed since. We started with the one squirt per nostrel and then at two months cut back to one squirt and alternated nostrels each night. I really would just wait it out for a while longer though. You child is still pretty young.
  2. http://www.homeschoolclassifieds.com/ - This is a great place to find used curriculum http://donnayoung.org/ - Printables and resources http://www.homeschoolchristian.com/Reviews/index.html - Curriculum reives from a Christian perspective.
  3. I can do this too!!! I can also: Cook great meals (not dessers) and get my kids to eat all kinds of things. Shopping and finding the best deal on something. It's an art and great therapy. Planning vacations and activites Giving a massage
  4. This is what we are having for dinner. Baked Potato Bar Potato Brocolli Cheese chicken (just cut up chicken tender I cooked real quick in the skillet with a little oil and seasoned with some herbs) sour cream or ranch butter side: stawberry, orange, and apple salad
  5. Can you tell me about Writing Tales. I'm not familiar with it. (You're not making my decision any easier...:p)
  6. You can start on R&S 4 with no previous experience IMO. DD just started (after doing 3) and it is going over all the same thing.
  7. MS is very easy....file a letter of intent and that's it. You don't even have to put what your are doing, just that you are going to teach your children.
  8. Alpha Omega also has a placement test. My dd started using the Horizons 1 when she was in K. We are now in the 4th grade book. I have been very please with Horizons. I started out with Saxon K. I thought it was way too basic and we did not like the scripted lessons. (However, I liked the scripted lessons in other subjects.)
  9. We take days off here and there. We take a couple of weeks for Christmas. This summer, we'll take a couple of weeks off, probably the middle of May and again early June. We'll have class until we finish science and history books, which should be mid to late July. If we finish those books before then, we'll keep doing our other subjects. Also, during the summer, we'll focus more on art, music, and other topics of interest. At the end of July, we'll take several weeks off before starting up on our "new" school year. We really like having school y ear round so we can take more frequent breaks. However, this will be the first summer in our new location and our children have friends in the neighborhood that go to PS. We'll have to see how that goes.
  10. :DWhen I am planning for next year, there always seems to be one subject that I gets me stuck. This year, I guess it is writing. DD is going in the 4th grade. She is about 30 lessons into R&S 4 English and will finish SWO D in a couple of weeks. I think I want to start a writing program with her. We have WS 2 that we started using a couple of years ago and did not really like it. (Maybe she was too young--or something--I just didn't really like it) I am open to any suggestions. I was wondering if anyone has used any of the following and what they think about them: **The Write Stuff Adventure **Write with the Best **Write source **Complete Writing Lessons Middle Grades **Wordsmith Apprentice **Writing Stretchers Can you tell that I got my RR catalog in and have finished going through it? :D TIA for your help.
  11. When we started, almost 4 years ago, I would write out weekly lesson plans for dd. I did that for two years. Then, I started writing out daily lesson plans for what we would cover the next day. That quickly lead to what I do now which is keep a steady pace with our lessons and do one after another. I know we need to cover math, English, Bible, and spelling everyday (or almost everyday) and history for two days and sciene for two days. Iv'e ben able to cover everything I need to cover this year. For example, in SOTW vol. 3, we are just where we need to be to keep doing 1-3 lessons each week (usually 2), take a few more breaks for spring break and a couple of summer breaks and be done with the book before we "start" school next year with vol. 4.
  12. I have a child that will be in 4th grade next year. She is on the older end (if that matters). I have another child that will be in 1st grade. He is on the younger end. (will turn 6 in July). We've been following the 4 year cycle recommended in WTM. I was wondering if I should start him with the 4th year so it would be eaiser to do thier lessons together or should I just plan on doing him on the 1st year and her on the 4th. I just see this getting a little more complicated at they get older. (Two different period in history and two different science topics, etc.) TIA
  13. Well, I just love the Wii. My kids play games (Wii Sports mainly) that really get your heat pumping. I can't wait for them to come out with more active games. I hear they are supposed to come out with Wii Fit. I'm not sure when though. It will come with a pressure-sensitive Wii Balance Board that you can use for the activities which will include aerobics, yoga, muscle stretches and games.
  14. We have really enjoyed Christian Kids Explore Chemistry. The lessons are short. There are unit tests in the book. Most importantly, my dd loves it.
  15. http://children.calvarychapel.com/site/curriculum.htm This is what I've been using for my children.
  16. I also love the idea of blogging under a different name. Just to clarify, I do not allow my children to google. If they want to google something, I do it for them. Of course this rule was made after dd googled "black mamba" and informed me that there is a lady in china with a myspace page named black mamba....new rule...luckily, I was right there with her and she didn't click on anything inappropriate. I googled Jack Johnson (love his music) one time and ouch--not good. The kids enjoy watching youtube videos. They know only mom and dad are allowed to find the videos for them to watch. Both kids like webkins . DS like hotwheels. DD likes going to disney and playing on club penguin. I have spent countless hours on club penguin and find it to be appropriate. She got banned once for having a typo. I know this because when she told me she got kicked off, I email the moderator to find out what happened. They reviewed the transcript and gave her privileges back. The context of what she wrote was fine, she just left a letter out of the word "count" and was immediately banned. Our kids are pretty computer savvy. They both follow the rules we have set. They are not given free reign though. They have sites in their favorites folder and that is where they are allowed to go. They also are not allowed on the computer during school time unless it is school related. We found a neat video on youtube about the American Revolution. For those of you who do allow internet time, what websites do your kids like?
  17. My daughter has been begging me to review a particular site for approval. Well, I reviewed it and did not approve it. DD is 9 and really wants to find a website with a message board/forums where she can intereact with other kids. Any suggestions? Also, just curious, do you allow your kids to "play" on the internet? We do and we monitor it closely. Our computer is in our family room right out in the open. DH stays on top of all the spyware/adware, etc. and on keeping the right filters, etc.
  18. but, I think I'll keep encouraging reading everyday (real books). We'll focus some on early American History up to the civil war. We'll do math and English 1-2 days/week and we'll do Latin 1x per week. We'll also focus alot on art and music and do some Chemistry experiments. We'll most likely take 3 weeks off beginning the last week of May, then another week or two at the end of June/first of July, then another one or two weeks at the end of August/first of Sept.
  19. We love the Charmin Ultra soft (It is the softest I've come across)--I love the mega roll. Makes the regular roll of angel soft (2nd brand I buy) look so tiny.
  20. to cry on...it's been one of those day (weeks, well months, well, just about all school year!!!) My ds who will be 6 in July is not wanting to do ANY work. It has gotten to be such a battle and I'm feeling so worn down. Am I the only one to ever deal with this? I'm sure I'm not. It's almost enough to make me put him in ps which is definately against my better judgement...I don't know what to do! Any suggestions would be great! My dd who is 9 does pretty good with school. I try to think back and remember if it was this hard with her when she was in K...I don't think it was, but I can remember times of talking to her about options other than homeschooling. I know he's only 5. He can write all his letters, upper and lower. He can add and subtract, etc. He's a smart kid. Each day, for written work, I have him do about 10 simple math problems, practice writing a few words (anywhere from 4-8 words), usually do a simple phonics sheet (fill in the letter, circle the correct word, etc). That's really it. The other work he does is a Bible lesson and reading/phonics when he really enjoys. Should I just stop with the seat work for now? How have you other mom's handled this?
