  1. In my opinion, I think it would be totally fine, especially if he's watched Avengers. I had no idea what it was about either (we've never read the books) but we really enjoyed it!
  2. Recently we finished and loved The OA, Travelers, Sneaky Pete, and just started the second season of The Man in the High Castle! Always looking for new, good shows!
  3. We are almost finished with Orbiting With Logic 10, 9, 8, 7... grades 5-7. I'm wondering what we can pick up next since my son enjoys it. He is 10.5. TIA!
  4. I just finished Blake Crouch's Dark Matter (loved it) and explained the concept loosely to my son (almost 11) and now he is dying to read something with that type of idea. This book is definitely too adult for him, but I'd love to find something along those lines for him.
  5. Thanks. He's definitely not interested in anything Minecraft. He was obsessed with it for a while and had some bad experiences with it, so he really never wants anything Minecraft-related again :)
  6. My son (almost 11) has been asking me about this kit: https://www.fatbraintoys.com/smartphone/single-page.cfm?parent_sku=TWS006&source=google&kwid=_cat%3Afatbraintoys.com&gclid=CJqmjZCH99ECFUeEfgod4OwO0Q He is obsessed with the idea of learning to "build" game systems or computers or whatever. He came across this recently and was wondering about it. Anyone have experience with it or something similar? Would love ideas.
  7. My daughter is in grade 8 taking a class at her charter Integrated Math 1 (the *new* integrated math which incorporates Algebra and Geometry plus a bit of other stuff). She's doing fine in it (90%) but I know it's going to start getting harder and we are wondering what extra resources might be helpful for her e.g. books or such. Also, her math teacher said that they are going to start doing a bit of PSAT prep in class. Any ideas of materials that could help her with that as well? Any recommendations? TIA!
  8. We loved Sneaky Pete! Just started The OA. We've also enjoyed Bloodline, orange is the new black, grace and Frankie, Stranger things, and house of cards.
  9. I love making soup but would also like some more good recipes. Some that I make fairly regularly: - Giada's lentil soup - pioneer woman's creamy tomato soup - pioneer woman's tortilla soup
  10. How did you know when your child was ready for AOPS pre-algebra. We are almost finished with beast academy 5b (two books to go). It's been a good fit for the most part but we have hit a few bumps (recently the statistics stuff has stressed him). Am trying to work through what our options are for next.
  11. We live in San Diego and I do think it's a pretty great place to live (we are having a cold snap and temps have been 60-65 during the day). It is REALLY expensive though. And just continuing to go up, so that's the worst. I'm thankful we bought a house 2.5 years ago so that those payments are consistent. I'd consider a move to Denver, Seattle, or Portland.
  12. Darn! It looks like I missed out this year :( Do they have any mention of the $25 order free shipping on the catalog?
  13. We have LONG said they should be making movies out of the Mysterious Benedict books. Wouldn't that be amazing? To dream!!
  14. I signed up to get one but haven't gotten it. Also, I'm wondering if anyone know if they will do the free shipping over $25 orders again (vs the $50 orders they always do).
  15. I read The Glass Castle when it first came out and it was really good (crazy and eye opening, but good!) All The Light We Cannot See - briefly started reading it and then it had to go back to the library. I hadn't gotten into it yet so maybe I need to give it another try because it gets mostly good reviews.
  16. I know the general discussion area has a book discussion, but I'm just looking for favorite reads that you've come across this year (or any time really). Some of my favorites this year are as follows. I'm including both independent reads and read alouds, but ultimately I'd love some recommendations for new books for ME to read :) - Between Shades of Gray -- LOVED this. It was the start of me learning more about Lithuania. - The Endless Steppe (after reading the above!) - My Mother's Secret (about a woman in Nazi Germany who hid/saved various people) - Child 44 (fiction set in Russia, war-time - it is #1 of a series, but have only read the first two) - Just Mercy (a look at our broken justice system -- non-fiction) - Evicted: Poverty & Profit (prompted from book above, very eye opening for me) - The Count of Monte Cristo (first time reading a 1300 page book!) - The Good Earth - The Midwife - several Richard Peck (read aloud) - The Princess and the Goblin (first time reading MacDonald - this was a read aloud) - Don Felder: Heaven and Hell (read it after meeting him and seeing him perform at a gala -- fascinating story really) - The Dream by Harry Bernstein (I hadn't realized I'd read another book of his last year, which was also really good) A few favorite re-reads as part of read aloud time: - Understood Betsy - Boy (love Dahl) - Owls in the Family - Bridge to Terabithia
  17. We have this from the library and haven't gotten to it yet. I was curious because some of the reviews aren't so great, but others are. We've been waiting for something more from him since we seriously loved Mysterious Benedict Society, so I think we definitely need to read it!
  18. We LOVED The War That Saved My Life! So incredible! A Night Divided really captured us as well (and we read it shortly after War, so maybe check it out!)
  19. You know, I can't pin that down. As a family, we all adore Harry Potter -- everything about it! The friendships, the magic, the whole shebang! :)
  20. I'm sure this has been asked before. My son is 10.5 and finally become passionate about reading thanks to the Harry Potter series. He will soon be finished and I am determined to have books as good waiting in the wings. Any excellent suggestions?
