  1. We are in San Diego and the housing prices have gone berserk. We are so thankful we bought three years ago, and we thought the prices were high then!
  2. My (just turning) 11 year old son has run out of shows to watch! Some of the things he's loved in the past - Spongebob, We Bare Bears, Granite Flats, Timeless (we all loved that show!), Leave it to Beaver, the recent Series of Unfortunate Events show on Netflix. He would like something that isn't too scary, and no sex. Any suggestions for new things to try out? We have cable, netflix, and Amazon prime.
  3. Ha, definitely not just your house!!! I hate hearing "we have nothing to eat" when in actuality, the pantry and freezer are full.
  4. Ewww - just read the VF article. Not the story in the least. The bit about Matthew? Ridiculous!!! I don't understand why they wouldn't just call this something else and change the names? It's not Anne of Green Gables at all. Call it That Orphan Girl (who's name is Emily) and then you can do whatever you want with the storyline without people getting mad.
  5. My husband has/had many female bosses/coworkers/employees. I think it would be ridiculous to limit interactions in those relationship. It would mean limited job choices for loads of people. I used to work in a very male filled career where I was often the only or rare female. No issues at all. Now I don't want my husband having sex or dating other women :) but friendships and business relationships? Necessary and totally acceptable.
  6. Well I don't know if it's expected, but I think it's a kind thing to do (sort of a pay it forward), so yes, we do. It just looks sooooo much better to fill in the holes and then touch up the paint. And really it doesn't take very long. One time we bought a house (a military move) and the previous owners did not fill in any holes and I have to say, I had a really negative experience in part because of it. The walls were so marked up and there were a lot of holes and it just looked shabby. It would have looked a thousand times better if they'd just filled in the holes and touched up the paint. It's the little things that make a difference. People are putting (often) their life savings into the house and I really want them to feel good about it when they walk in the door for the first time as owners. I think of it as a bit of a "pay it forward" kind of thing. I have honestly been amazed at the difference in the before and after by doing just this simple little thing.
  7. These are what I ordered 13 years ago. Not sure if they are still as good but honestly the best I have ever tried. Not cheap but they do have sales or coupons sometimes. http://www.garnethill.com/solid-hemstitched-supima-c2ae-percale-bedding/bedding-home/sheets/221425?&defattribvalue=main
  8. Oh totally saving this list for watching with my daughter! How about Then and Now? That old movie with Demi Moore. Father of the Bride Bend It Like Beckham (I loved the music so much in that I bought the soundtrack and also the DVD) Flipped - a sweet movie about a girl who has a rush on a boy that moves into town and shows their relationship through the years. I loved that movie. The Outsiders - favorite movie from my childhood. Grease! My daughter loooooves that one.
  9. Garnet hill. That's my 13 year old sheets that are so amazing. Thankfully I have two sets because one got a thin spot and tore (I didn't rotate between them enough so that set got way more use). Love them.
  10. I agree with this -- such an annoyance when companies do that!
  11. I loooved Station Eleven. I enjoy good dystopian fiction and wish for more like it, but I've yet to find anything really. Have you? And yes, I mentioned Tana French above, and I just adore her writing style. It sticks with you for sure!
  12. I just finished The Likeness and I'm a huge fan of Tana French after reading her first two books. Can't wait to read the rest!
  13. Hmm - I read somewhere $25/month or $99 per year but I might be wrong. They also appear to have coupon codes.
  14. I'm going to sign up for the 30 day trial -- I probably won't do it until mid April because we have a lot going on until then!
  15. https://jam.com/courses/8/invent-your-own-machines?utm_source=Facebook-Ads&utm_medium=cpc&campaignID=Inventions-video&custom=FB Has anyone seen or tried this? It looks amazing! My son is so into cardboard inventions and this popped up on my Facebook. Curious if anyone has experience with it?
  16. Seconding this web site. Ray is the one who runs it and actually lives in my town! I've ordered many times from him (including all my Beast Academy and other stuff). It always gets to me QUICK and I don't even pay until after I receive it (I send him a check). Seemed a bit odd the first time I ordered that way, but he's awesome. And everything is free shipping and no tax. It's really pretty amazing!
  17. Super thankful for this thread. At this point, all I know for sure is AOPS pre-algebra (we will have finished Beast Academy 5D once it comes out finally!) And he will be taking a writing class at the local charter school. Probably Real Science Odyssey Biology. Am looking at another thread for grammar (the engaging grammar thread). History will continue with Build Your Library grade 6 (American History part 2 -- we've done part 1 this year and love it).
  18. Following because up until now we've been very loosey goosey about grammar, but plan to spend more time with it in grade 6.
  19. I'm obsessed with chia seeds and they have so many health benefits. I put them in my oatmeal. But my very favorite thing for Chia seeds is to make chia seed gel (shake them up in a jar with water) and add the gel to smoothies. Looooove.
  20. Not a movie but we are watch and loving The Kindness Diaries!
  21. No regrets here at all. I homeschooled my daughter through grade 7 -- this year (grade 8) she is going to a charter three days a week, which means she is also home Monday and Friday. We have the best relationship, in part I think because of homeschooling and all the quality time we had together. I'm still fully homeschooling my son who is in grade 5 and no signs of stopping any time soon. It's not always easy but I know this is what he needs and I love it.
  22. I don't think there are any topics I'd feel the need to censor at this point. She knows it all. I've handed Infidel over to her, though she hasn't yet gotten to it.
  23. My daughter is into non-fiction right now and I would love recommendations that will really hold her interest. She recently read Night by Elie Wiesel, so that level of graphic and maturity is totally fine. TIA!
  24. Okay, that is super helpful! So it sounds like the class has a bunch of "extra" stuff that you wouldn't have if you weren't doing the class? And then you go through the text/homework with him the same way you would do say Beast Academy? Did you guys do beast academy? With Beast, I read over the guide book with him, then assign the workbook pages but I sit there with him so that he can get help when he needs it, and make sure he's on the right track, etc. (plus he just likes me sitting there with him, haha, I usually just read my book during most of that!)
