  1. I need to find something great for my dd, to keep her organized. Suggestions?
  2. I love Laura Mercier. By far, the makeup that works best (that I've tried) with my sensitive skin.
  3. Mostly we will be following the Build Your Library sugggestions but I also like some of these!
  4. In the past I bought the following from Amazon for $45. But I see they don't sell them in individual units anymore and the price is way higher for two units. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003YFHCKY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Brother TN450 High Yield Black Toner Wondering what everyone else uses for their printer now?
  5. Have you looked at Real science odyssey? You can buy the kit from home science tools so that the experiments you do are easy to implement.
  6. I wouldn't be comfortable in that situation either. I say the nephew needs to come to your house for the lesson and maybe the two can go out for "coffee" or lunch afterwards, so your son gets his away-from-home time?
  7. My husband did it with my son this past year, although they only completed half of it because they were also finishing up Chemistry. For some reason, my son found it really boring and repetitive. It was really disappointing for him! Since I didn't do it with him myself I can't say much more than that, other than the felt he wasn't learning that much. He was 10 / grade 5. This year he's going to try a charter science class for a while, but if that doesn't suit him, we'll switch over to RSO's Biology 2 since we already own it.
  8. So glad this helped you! I just missed the sale last year as well so I liked their Facebook page and that's how I found out about the sale. History has become my favorite subject thanks to this curriculum!
  9. I've been waiting for this sale for a while and thought someone else might be interested as well. We used this for the first time in grade 5 and loved it. We'll be continuing it with my son for grade 6 (American History Part 2). My favorite history we've ever used by far! But also love all the books that are included. This is heavy on read alouds, which I love. For American History (grade 5 and 6) it uses the ten Joy Hakim books which I have really enjoyed so far. "For the next 2 weeks (August 6 – 20, 2017) you can take 20% off of your entire purchase! Just use the code Summer17 at checkout." http://buildyourlibrary.com/
  10. I do this too. I order a bunch from the library that sound good to me, then I read the excerpt and have my son pick which one sounds most interesting to him!
  11. Last year we used Build your Library for grade 5 and loved it -- basically we read all of the books in that plus added some more that looked good for evening read alouds. I get my ideas from various sources -- here, goodreads, bravewriter, classics, etc. I just mix it up and try to pick things I think my son will like.
  12. This edition of Pinocchio: https://www.amazon.com/Pinocchio-Carlo-Collodi/dp/0224070568/ref=sr_1_29?ie=UTF8&qid=1501972214&sr=8-29&keywords=pinocchio+book+carlo+collodi I got it from the library years ago and did it as a read aloud and still think about it and wonder if I should get it even though my kids are 14 and 11 (for when they have kids I guess). One of my favorite read alouds in part because of the illustrations.
  13. Owning a house reduces the amount of income tax you pay as you can write off the interest for sure. That's a nice benefit as you will have more in your pocket to pay for the expenses.
  14. Love this thread! I had no idea there was a movie for A Tree Grows in Brooklyn!
  15. In those cases, I usually send a quick email like "gosh I realized when I got home that saying "blank" might have been offensive when I really meant it like "blank". I'm sorry if that came out the wrong way!"
  16. Well, we are home! I did get some really awful nosebleeds, but I think the saline gel did help some. We loved the town of Louisville. The inventory is pretty slim right now and we didn't find a house we loved, but did get a feel for the town and thought it was really cute and quaint. Definitely expensive for what you get in comparison to other places. We looked at a bunch of places in Broomfield and Westminster and though I said I did not want a tract home, they really have some nice ones there, and I might have to compromise on that! Some of them are gigantic though! Wow. The biggest problem is that if he got an offer in a week's time, school will start within two weeks of that. And since we didn't find "the" house, and could easily find something in any of the above areas, deciding which school to register in is a problem. I don't even know how that would work. What if I registered her in the Broomfield school district (while living in temporary housing) but then found the perfect house in Louisville. The LAST thing I would want to do is uproot her again). That part is really scary to me. Speaking of my daughter, she didn't go with us, and still can't talk about the possibility of us moving. My husband just got out of the military 3.5 years ago so she is no stranger to uprooting, but she is currently so settled, has a great group of friends, is in a fantastic small-ish charter school (very hard to get into) and will be going there with all her friends. She was also only one of three freshmen girls to make it into the Varsity dance team (and all schools have their auditions in the spring, so that really would be hard to leave behind). My son is fine with whatever we do and would still continue to homeschool so that's easier. The interview went well and it's down to him and one other candidate (interview within the week). But he also has two possibilities here, so hoping he has some choices to make. Thank you all for the great advice. It really helped us narrow down the areas to look at, and that was so helpful!
  17. You all are my people!! The fingernails scratching fabric - how can they stand it themselves? Same with nose whistling. Or breathing loudly. Or breathing from your mouth. Just go ahead and kill me why don't you.
  18. Oh my, yes, yes, yes. The chewing and swallowing - I die and have to either have music playing or leave the room. My husband's typing drives me INSANE. I can.not.handle it. Who phones someone? I mean who does that?! LOL. I'm right there with you. I have to say this is probably the very best thread I've ever seen. I get irritated at pretty much everything, so I could have multi-quoted everyone's post in agreement, but I thought well that's probably one of those things someone gets irrationally irritated over. People who spell lose as loose. No friend, you did not "loose" your phone.
  19. I once quit a job in part over the oxford comma. I was the web designer for a startup. As we started growing, management thought they needed to hire a director for all the web content. The first thing this woman prioritized was going through the entire web site to remove the oxford comma (she came from a magazine background). I fought HARD against it. I found all kinds of articles to back me up, but in the end she said her decision and they were gone. It was just such a bad start to our relationship and I ended up quitting shortly after that (and then not long after that, they went out of business, ha!)
  20. I forgot the most important question! What are the regulations for homeschoolers? It's super easy here in California that you pretty much have to do nothing (although right now we are connected to a charter while still doing everything at home, but even that is SUPER easy). I didn't even think to ask about that for Colorado!
  21. California traffic is no joke either. I tend to stay mostly within a 10 mile radius of home, so definitely important to have a place we love with all the good stuff close by :)
  22. Things are progressing. They are flying him out so we are all going with him beforehand to check out the area, look at housing, etc. It's both scary and exciting. I know my daughter will adapt no matter what, it will just be challenging for a while. And the rest of us are pretty easy going. He also has some possibilities here, so it will probably come down to him making a choice, which is a lot better than being forced into one thing because it's the only option. Fingers crossed that everything works out seamlessly whichever way it goes. Thanks for the advice so far!
  23. Definitely want the commute to be easy for my husband to go to the company, especially with winter weather.
  24. My husband has an interview in that area this week (his company had a massive layoff 3.5 weeks ago) and we are wondering about where are the best places to live that have the best schools. The job is in Broomfield but a good friend lives in Louisville and loves it. Would love advice and insight. Our daughter will be starting high school (she goes to a charter here in California and will still want to go to school even though she absolutely doesn't want to move period). Our son will continue homeschooling this year regardless (grade 6) but at some point I would love to find a good charter for him. This was not planned and is very last minute, so we are quite freaking out right now. Would love any advice.
