  1. I forgot to mention , Sonlight sells the timeline figues too. This is very intuitive - as your daughter reads a period of history, and covers a main figure, put it on the timeline. Add to it, make little pictures, color, etc., if she wants. It's something sort of personal, almost private, as each one does it "their way". HTH :)
  2. Hi - I just wanted to throw out to you an alternative to the wall time line, which is great, but can take up alot of room. Sonlight sells a spiral-bound chart called the Book of Time. (p. 131 of the current Sonlight catalog, or www.sonlight.com/KH06.html). We are using the Book of Time it and like it very much! This is also something my child can have and add to thru her high school yrs, since she's just strated this in 7th grade.
  3. KAR12OC, I'm sorry, I didn't read down further, to see your post! You answered some ?s' for me. Thanks. So, the students do talk w/ the Spanish tutor every week? My daughter would love the self-paced aspect, and is doing this w/ Latin & Logic online, independently through Memoria Press this year.
  4. Azalea & gingersmom, Thanks so much for the info! I tried to sign onto the OK state site as a guest, but did not get too far ; I will try later today. Just a few questions: Is this a full yr course? If she starts now, do you know if can she work thru early summer, if need be? How is the Spanish conversation handled? i.e., w/ a teacher, other students, a lesson? Is there "homework" or reinforcement of the lesson? Thanks!
  5. Beth - thanks so much. This is what we may do down the road, and there is a Christian school 40 min. away, but for this yr my daughter really wants to stay home, having been schooled since pre school - 6th , she is really loving her school time at home. She is in 7th grade now, and maybe towards high school (9th grade, maybe even next yr). she will want to take an outside class. Yes, I agree w/ you in using a language w/ others is key to learning it. I will save this in my next yr plans!! Thanks.
  6. Azeala (love that name!), when you glitchy, what do you mean? Thx.
  7. Hello, I would really appreciate some advice on Spanish curriculum for my 12 yod, who had had 3 yrs Spanish @ private school, and loves language. She has v. good retention, and a thirst to learn. (She started Latin this yr, really loves it*). Rosetta Stone is a possibility: but I don't think she should start @ Level 1, maybe Level 2? Yes? They do have a sale now, so I've was thinking of trying this.... Any thoughts/experiences would be greatly appreciated, (esp. since RS is not cheap!) Muchas Gracias :) *Also, she's doing Latina Christiana I, her first exposure to Latin and finding it fun. Thinking of getting Latina Christiana 2. Has anyone done this? What did/do you recommend next? She's thinking of taking Latin thru high school. Thanks.
  8. Are there any UCONN basketball here? I am and I! Isn't it amazing that they won 89 consecutive games........What do you think? Are the lessons/attitudes we as homeschoolers can take from Geno's coaching? I understand his practices are often harder than the real games, expect for those teams that are more of a match for UCONN. I just think it is a fascinating feat! The power of planning/training and teamwork!!
  9. :iagree: Take her back tomorrow, and don't let them schedule a late afternoon appt. (Late morn. or early afternoon). Must ask for strep and/or bloodwork tests. Ask, ask ,ask, and take notes if there is anything else this could be? Any other kids in last month w/ these symptoms? Is there another doc in the practice to see? If so, insist on seeing the doc w/ the most experience. (owner or senior doc)
  10. :party:I'd wait to tell ....sign the contract (don't jinx it!!!) Congrats on all the HARD work, perisistence, vision, and skill coming to fruition. Wishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas!!!
  11. Hi , We have quite a few nieces in college and graduated from college. What I do is give money to "my" nieces/nephews (my brothers kids), and gift cards to Barnes & Noble to our nieces that are my hubands sisters' kids. We have ceased giving gifts to the parents of said nieces & nephews it's just tooooo much $$$..... Also, we give everyone the exact same amt :), so it's all transparent and fair. The kids, esp in college can use any money that comes their way...HTH
  12. My 12 yo dd has a good attitude, but I think its because she is so much happier here than private school, (she was in ps and ps k-6), so I guess its more an attitude of appreciation for her. :) (that I'm hs'ing her). BUT, if we were still at private school , I know her attitude would be much different, as it was back in 6th grade , esp. comparing herself to all her peers, etc. Now, that's gone :tongue_smilie:.
  13. I have a 7th grader, and will use only exerpts; reasons above posters listed (content is sometimes adult in nature).
  14. My 7th grader loves. loves loves history. We are using Kingfisher (not too expensive), and extensive library books. Following the Well-Trained Mind rec's regarding writing (list of main points, select a topic of interest, outline this topic from a non-fic book, write a bit about this topic). We have almost 100 checkouts from the library now........often the kids will just sit near where the public library books are and read, flip, look. It's inexpensive and they love it.
  15. Lori D. - What a great overview. Into my second yr, and I really appreciate all this insight!!
  16. Thank You so Much - This is great!!! Thanks for being so thoughtful to share with us.
  17. Joanne, A new Chapter will begin in your new place. Know that all your goodness, and good intentions are not for naught; your goodness will come to be in this new home. Be Strong, and smile. Prayers are with you from me. :)
  18. When I was little. I can remember walking on the kitchen chairs, with my 2 older sisters, in front of the sink and dish drainer, as we washed dishes! This wasn't everyday, only on the the weekends, (I think!:tongue_smilie:). I had to be 2 or 3 yrs old, my oldest sister was 7. My daughter washes all her dishes when she bakes (I help if there's alot!). But I do the everyday dishes.....even though we have a dishwasher. I remember when my daughter went to Montessori school for preschool, she had to wash her snack dishes every day (age 3 & 4), and as a "lesson", they had to wash the snack table and chairs, thoroughly. I have a 5 yo son, and now you have me thinking, I think we'll do some dish washing, just to expose him to it, this week, Thanks!!!:)
  19. Having lost my Father this past June, I couldn't imagine something like this happening at that most difficult time.........I think common courtesy, (and sense), should rule. You did the right thing, law or no law. :)
  20. the pudding with end results of a good, stong writer and/or SAT writing results. To ellaborate: I'm asking for experiences of anyone who has closely followed the WTM method of writing from grammer, logic, and rhetoric stages and then the senior high school yrs and the result. Reason I'm asking: Homeschooling my 12 yr old only 1 year, coming from public school (3yrs) and private school (3 yrs) where writing and grammer were taught very differently. I am following the WTM method closely and have quite a bit of catch - up to do (esp grammer), but want a little lifting up or "pep talk" for myself I guess, to make sure this is valid, solid. Also, some of the other hs writing curriculum is tempting CW, IEW and I'm trying to educate myself as to if we need these or WTM Gold is good).
  21. I am hsing my DD, 12 yrs old, 1 1/2 yrs, after public and private school through the 5th grade. We are following the WTM, and I have reviewed the methods suggested for history and LA thoroughly. For those of you who have high school to college aged students, have you followed the WTM methodology? The narrations, outlining, and summaries (from both the history reading list, and the reading list of famous men/women), do you follow the WTM's schedule closely? Why or why not? In retrospect, have they worked? What are you pleased with? What have you changed? SWB, could you give testimony to how this has worked for your sons? The narrations, outlining, and summaries - do you follow the WTM's schedule? Why or why not? I totally agree that this will show my daughter how to think and evaluate. I just need to know if the experienced teachers have "tweaked" this and how? Why? History/Lit is such a passion for my daughter, she is chomping at the bit, and want to make sure when I let her run, it's in the right direction. Any info/wisdom would be appreciated. Thank You . :) (Alot!)
  22. Thanks Tiffany, I will ask this on the High School board, great suggestion!!:)
