  1. Honestly, I think it's impossible to know without just giving it a try. If he's done 8/7, I'd just go ahead with the two pre-algebra books. By the time he does those, you should know if it is a fit or not. Then he can move to LOF beginning Alg, or Saxon Alg 1 if you choose to stay with Saxon. Sandra
  2. Thanks everyone for your responses. We have opted to continue with Saxon for now AND add in the 2 pre-algebra books from LOF. After those are done, we will re-evaluate and see if we want to go to JUST LOF or continue with Saxon.
  3. Thanks! :) Yep, I realized I typed that wrong...duh! need more coffee....... She won't do the Easy grammar. R&S is a complete English text with grammar and writing (lot's of papers to write and sentence diagramming) She finds Easy Grammar to be too easy for her liking and prefers a "real" in her words, English text. It's a LOT more! - Starting Points is a completely separate year. Not with the MFW and a separate year on a transcript. Needs to be called something other that worldview for the NCAA.
  4. Thanks for the reply. I see what you are saying about more than one English credit in the year. Not sure how to handle that since she will be doing 2 complete English programs... The Starting Points is an entirely separate situation and transcript. I just don't know what to call it!
  5. We will be using MFW US to 1877 with both our children, one junior, one freshman. For the 9th grader she will do all of the literature reading, but the writing assignments will be modified, for instance instead of an entire essay for something it may be only a couple of paragraphs etc... She has not done the first two years of MFW high school yet, so she hasn't had all of the instruction on types of essays etc. She will do a LOT of writing. She will also be doing Rod and Staff English 8. She loves Rod and Staff. I'm thinking for the transcript.... American History 1 American Literature 1 9th grade English 1 Will that work? Or should I just make either the Lit or the English a .5 credit? For a total of 1.5 credits? Also, for David Quines Starting points, the book says it is worth 3 credits if done in High School. I don't think so. How many credits would you award for Starting Points and what would you call them? I'm thinking "Intro to Philosophy" 1 credit Analytical Literature 1 credit. Thanks, Sandra
  6. If you switch to saxon, have your son take the placement test first. It is most unlikely that he would place into Saxon Alg 2. He will probably need to start with Saxon Alg 1 which will review some, but introduce a LOT of material that is not in TT Alg 1. (we found this out the hard way) Sandra
  7. Page vi in your book tells how to set up the lab notebook (it's part of the introduction) Also on the intro it gives you the website: http://www.apologia.com/bookextras and the password to put in the box. There you will find a sample lab write up and MUCH much more! Hope this helps Sandra
  8. I know! I asked him about it and he said that the need was there and now he thinks that you should do them first. Because too many kids got hung up on the word problems in beginning alg and in the second pre-alg book he shows a way to figure them out that isn't even in the beginning Algebra book. I'm a little discouraged, because I though that after alg 1/2 with saxon she'd surely be able to go to beginning algebra!
  9. Thanks for all the responses. Talked with the author today and he said that dd would need to do pre-alg 1 and pre alg 2 even though she had saxon alg 1/2 done. She was less than thrilled with having to do those before the beginning alg book, so I'm not sure if we will go that route or not. Hmm... lots to think about.
  10. I am curious if anyone has used JUST life of fred for algebra and up, and if so how did it work out for you? I'm thinking of having dd switch to fred after saxon 1/2 is finished. Sandra
  11. We use and love : http://www.redwagontutorials.com live classes. Our son took Chem this year. He scored 99% percentile on the Stanfords every year. Does well on the Explore, PLAN, PSAT etc... also.
  12. With Tapestry, I'd drop the extra vocabulary program. Instead use the method Stobaugh suggests: write unfamiliar words on 3 X 5 cards and then put their definitions on the back. Works for us!
  13. Yes, they do, it is in the AHL lit and comp supplement. If you tell the office you are starting with US to 1877 they would probably send you a copy of the rubric. MFW makes is so EASY to be consistent and fair in the grading. Sandra
  14. According to the fred website, after the trig book is calculus. I'd think that must mean that it covered pre calculus.
  15. If he likes to read, I'd suggest reading through the Life of Fred math books. They would teach the math in a practical way, and provide a bit of humor in the process. Sandra
  16. What? There is a citation maker? I had no idea.... where do I find such a wondrous item?
  17. wow, my guy is so average compared to you guys! But, alas he did have me for a teacher! :)
  18. Us: MFW US to 1877 for biblical worldview 1 credit Us History 1/2 credit government 1/2 credit Literature 1 credit Advanced Biology - redwagontutorials.com 1 credit Saxon Advanced Math with Art Reed/Dive as needed 1 credit Portuguese 2 / 3 (2 is almost done) 1 credit Teen Coder Game programming 1/2 credit Some sort of additional English Grammar - R&S, Analytical, or maybe just the Easy Grammar 11 which MFW suggests - no credit... just because he needs it I'd love to hear what you all are using
  19. Keep the Faith, Our 10th grade (almost done!) was: MFW World History and Literature (Bible, History, English) LOTS more lit as suggested in Stobaugh's SAT prep book Saxon Alg II with Art Reed DVD's Honors Chemistry with redwagontutorials.com Teen Coder windows programming Rosetta Stone Portuguese II writeathome.com essay writing and research paper (happy with the essay course, not the research course) Other stuff: football -Got his Varsity letter! YEA! track and field - still competing - might letter national homeschool honor society Eagle Scout - still active in boy scouts I may have forgotten something, but don't know what
  20. Your plan looks fine to me. Here's what we have for 9th grade DD Summer course through veritas press online academy - The Novels of Jane Austin - 1 literature credit Fall: MFW US history to 1877 History 1/2 credit Government 1/2 credit Literature 1 credit Biblical Worldview 1 credit Honors Biology - redwagontutorials live class 1 credit French 1 - veritas press online academy - 1 credit Saxon Alg 1 - 1 credit Rod and Staff English 8 - 1/2 English credit How's that look? I don't think I'm forgetting anything. She already earned the following credits this year in 8th.... veritas press online academy ... Art Studies I - 1 credit Logic 1 - 1 credit Starting Points by David Quine..... 1 credit (but I don't know what to call it. They say it's worth 3 credits, I say it's worth 1) any suggestions on what to call it?
  21. the grade 11 ultimate doesn't start with that (I have it in hand), but according to the website and placement tests, you don't have to start with EG Plus to use the program. You can just jump right in, especially if they have had other grammar instruction. They have a quick teaching of each concept before the student does the work.
  22. Yippee! We had the homeschool state track meet and the results are.... DD13 - 2nd 800 2nd 1600 1st 300M Hurdles 2nd 4 x 100 relay DS15 1st 4 X 200 relay Thankful to MFW for allowing time for outside activities! Blessings Sandra
  23. Could you do MFW AHL and tell him he's 8th grade? Then when you are in the last year with MFW and he's in 11th, decide then if you want to graduate him then or do CC dual enrollment, or more classes at home for a year.
