  1. [quote name=Musicmom;4133902Whether or not they have their facts right about the definition of a complete protein I don't know' date=' but as written, the sentence is saying a complete protein has both those components.) :tongue_smilie:[/quote] That is what threw me off. I knew that the definition of a complete protein was incorrect. Therefore, there should be a another comma. If the definition was correct, then it would make sense.
  2. :iagree: and is higher in fiber...... that is NOT part of the definition of a complete protein.
  3. AHL is comprised of Bible, History and English (lit, grammar and writing). I agree that 3 hours a day, sometimes 4 when a paper is being work upon is an accurate time estimate. Some days the English takes longer, some the history, sometimes the Bible, the schedule fluctuates a bit.
  4. Just got back home from California and checked the thread. Glad to hear that ds scores are good, the ACT was new test for us. My dd will be a completely different ballgame. She doesn't do well on tests, she's pretty average. Usually the 70th + percentile, she hit 83rd this year on the Stanford tests, but that was a first. So I'm pleased with that.
  5. We are one of the average families too.... One DD will probably test "average" as in a 21 or 22 when she gets to the ACT. SMART kid, doesn't test well at all. OK, I confess she's pretty normal. :) DS, going into his sophomore year just got his scores back for his first ACT attempt as a freshman and got Composite 26 English 25 Mathe 24 Reading 26 Science 28 He tests better than his sister, but still not stellar like alot of the kids here. Honestly I have no idea if he scores are good or not, we just took the test because someone said you can take it alot of times and I wanted him to see what it is like. We found a great test prep company the week of the test and I think that helped a lot! Sometimes it can be so discouraging to read about all the bright kids here, but I try to remember that MY kids are doing the BEST they can and no matter what happens, they will be fine. Maybe they won't get a scholarship, maybe we will have to work along with them to pay for a state college, but either way, things will work out. The point is, don't be discouraged, just keep on plugging and know that you are doing your best!
  6. That's the funny thing, my dd is currently finishing R&S 7 and she does just fine. I do LOVE the writing in rod and staff. I guess my concern is that he would need to start with book 7 and I'm not sure if he will get "up to speed", so to speak, with his writing quick enough. I'm wondering if by using IEW (swic - c and the elegant essay) if that would be a more time efficient way to go about it. I just can't decide.
  7. Still trying to decide on this what to do for this particular son regarding grammar and writing. He will be doing MFW US to 1877. That part is great. He does need some more writing instruction. Not the fault of MFW, it is my fault for not being diligent on his past instruction. Considering the following: Rod and Staff English 7 - all of the assignments, I know the grammar is solid, just not sure if the writing will be enough. OR using Easy Grammar Ultimate as scheduled in MFW and also Doing IEW's Student writing intensive C and the Elegant Essay. My writing is terrible, and I need hand holding to teach it to my son. If you have used either of these or have any thoughts, I would appreciate your input. Or alternative ideas are welcome also.
  8. Just sharing... My son did very well with Chemistry this year (B that would have been an A except he forgot to submit a formal lab report and received a 0) from redwagontutorials.com That being said, he is an Saxon Alg II this year and struggled around test 14 (sin and cosine), so we ended up backing up from test 20 to the point of the book where he started struggling.....He will finish the book, but not until August. After speaking with Mr. R, we decided to hold off on Physics for a year to solidify the math, and go with Advanced Biology because of the prerequisites for Physics. These are the from the apologia website. Junior Physics* Physics* Algebra I, Geometry; basic Trigonometry functions Blessings, Sandra
  9. For a student in High School who has had little formal grammar instruction (he completed All-in-One English with My Father's World a few years ago), I am considering the following: Jensen's Grammar Analytical Grammar (we started this for a few weeks years ago, but stopped for some reason that I can't remember) Easy Grammar Ultimate Grade 11 (this is what MFW has scheduled for US1 which we will be completing this year, but they assume your student has done Applications of Grammar book 1) Rod and Staff 6 or 7 Of the above which would you suggest and why? Also if Rod and Staff, would you do 6 or 7? He will only have two years total in which to complete his grammar studies. Thanks again for all the hive advice! Blessings Sandra
  10. Thank you so much! It was so beneficial to hear how this has worked out for each of your children. It's amazing how different children can be as far as their retention, style of learning and preferences. You taking the time to be so detailed is truly a blessing! Sandra
  11. Just wondering if some of the posters from last year will update us on how LOF is going for you a year later. Sandra
  12. Okay, This is going to sound terrible but my dd14 JUST BARELY missed scoring high enough on her 8th grade Stanford Achievement Test to make honor society like her big brother. We were told we can retest as long as it is in a group setting by a teacher to try again before August. So.... I found a private school who is willing to do a group testing session and I can pick the test they will administer. Yes, this is the awful part....which is easiest, or on which one would she most likely score highest? She's a bright girl with test anxiety, so yes, I want to give her the EASIEST test. She literally throws up on testing days. I've been told the CAT, but I wanted to ask all you ladies..... Blessings, Sandra
  13. Thanks! And thanks for not chastising me! :001_smile:
  14. We have kept ours busy with Boy Scouts (Made Eagle at 14), volunteering, honor society, and of course schoolwork. Also football, and track and field. :) mom of 3 girls and 1 boy....the girls I understand....the boy is harder

  16. Okay, I'll admit... I roll on the floor and laugh every time I hear this type of statement about MFW! Not at you, just at the statement. MFW suggests the Stobaugh SAT prep book which has them reading 1 BOOK PER WEEK! Yes, the same books that the WTM suggests. The list of books my son has read while doing AHL and WHL is LONG! Things like Kon Tiki, Life with Father, Mutiny on the Bounty, Lost Horizon etc... MFW gives you the flexibility to choose WHEN and if you want to read more. They do value reading and writing! I can speak for US2 because I don't have it, but in US1 Looking through the US literature supplement I see LOTS of writing.... lots and lots of different types and purposes which require plenty of analysis identify theme, tone, plat, use of figurative language in this work and compare this to the woman caught in adultery. descriptive essays worldview responses worldview conversations - made up and written autobiography compare and contrast paper 2 page description of your father summarize what Jonathan Edwards said in ..... Those are just a few (not all) from just the first 5 lessons of the 22 lessons in the Lit supplement. Just my two cents worth, which isn't much. We are so looking forward to US 1 and hope you enjoy US2. Blessings Sandra
  17. I would definitely continue with Rod and Staff 6. The MFW suggests applications of grammar with AHL if needed. If you do Rod and Staff 6 that will cover most of what Applications of Grammar would cover. Can you tell we've been there? My son SHOULD have done what I just said to you, but no, I felt like surely what he'd done was enough. Grr.... He will be doing US to 1850 in the fall and will be doing Rod and Staff 6 minus the writing assignments. Yep, you read that right, better late than never! My dd who will be a freshman, will be doing Rod and Staff 8. Just my two cents, which are not really worth 2 cents :001_smile:
  18. Well, I guess that's a wee bit too far from Kansas for a visit! We are blessed to have lots of home school friends from church, sports teams (my son lettered in football and track this year and my daughter is a runner (1/2 marathons and such) etc.... Also, and this may be something to consider for your son, our children take a few live online courses that use gp4 or wimba, so they have made friends around the world. They skype sometimes when not in class, email etc... I know it's not the same, but they really have formed some neat friendships.
  19. :grouphug: for you and your son. No advice really, just :grouphug: What area do you live in? Sandra
  20. Honestly, one of the benefits of homeschooling is the ability to tailor the instruction to fit each child. I'd use the best individual option for each child :) Sandra
  21. Just a side note, I answered yes for I would.... :) The bible actually instructs husbands to love their wives. But no where are wives instructed to love their husbands. They are told different instructions. Makes for a great Bible study! Anyone who has no remorse over such a cruel action is certainly not someone to marry for any reason. Sandra
  22. Yes. Unless there was a physical repulsion. Love is an action. This was commonplace for years and years. The "feeling" we often refer to as love these days is in many cases simply infatuation or lust. Building a relationship together, caring for and being with can all foster a true love for each other. I would NOT however lie to the man. He needs to know up front that the woman does not "love" him, but will honor him, respect him and be willing to be devoted to him. He needs to understand that she may or may not ever have those schoolgirl "love" feelings. My two cents....please don't beat me up for my opinion. I said I would, doesn't mean I think anybody else SHOULD! Sandra
  23. :grouphug: and thank you. I remember those days well.....
