  1. 1 cup arborio rice 5 cups whole milk 5 tbsp sugar 1tsp vanilla Bring to boil, then stir constantly over med low heat until desired consistency. From my friend's french MIL. Yum!
  2. Juilliard. For music, or drama. It just seems like the competition is so intense...but I guess it is a good goal to have...I think she potentially has the talent. But if she puts in the time and doesn't get in, she will certainly have skills that will serve her well elsewhere. I think she would also really love to be an English major somewhere like Yale. I am thinking honors program in a state school is the more practical option, barring scholarships. Oh--and she would also love Hogwarts!
  3. Yes, I have, and am currently in the middle of decisions regarding meds. I know it is tough for parents to weigh the risks and benefits. More to say on this but I will have to come back later...
  4. No, others aren't suggesting it, it was from his own words on his own blog. I don't have time to go back and find the links. Something like, "we tried everything...we tried starving her...we tried hitting her as hard as we could..." Clearly the kid needed help. But I am skeptical of the diagnosis. And putting a kid that young on anti-psychotics that have not been tested in children is certainly not without controversy.
  5. Honestly--the more I have read and watched, the more I think that parenting is the issue *in this case*. And regardless--I do not believe he has the right to put all of this information about the child out there forever in the public domain. I find it abhorrent. I think he is sacrificing his daughter's privacy for publicity. (And that is leaving out the alleged abuse.)
  6. Another perspective on the parents. http://spitbristleandfury.wordpress.com/2009/07/22/january-first/#comments I have to wonder what the outcome would be with some appropriate limit-setting by the parents.
  7. Do you have any idea how competitive it is to get into medical school and vet school, even for students with practically perfect grades and test scores from well regarded undergraduate schools? I strongly agree with the suggestion of speaking with some admissions officers in graduate programs as you plan for the future.
  8. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1275945/Pilot-injured-plane-crashes-CAR-near-North-Weald-Airfield.html Volvo vs. plane. Maybe worth the extra repair bills?
  9. I feel your pain. My 5 yr. old can't get off the bus if I am not there and we live directly across the street from the bus stop. In a quiet neighborhood on a cul-de-sac. She doesn't even have to set foot on the main street. Everyone in my neighborhood when I was a kid walked to school after the first day of kindergarten. It seems like they need to have flexibility esp. for situations like yours.
  10. It isn't about the tick. It is about the picking. She will likely continue to find places to pick. But, yes, I would get a referral from the ped. to someone familiar with treating this issue in kids and with CBT.
  11. This is a form of OCD. She is probably already ashamed to be doing it, so don't shame her anymore. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy can help, and would be indicated, IMO. In the meantime I might try giving her a squeeze ball or some fidgets while she is working.
  12. :iagree: you don't need the derm for this. Bettter to check sooner than later. And take precautions with drainage in case it is staph.
  13. Could also be just regular staph. An urgent care or ped could help sooner than derm if so.
  14. If they hurt it could be MRSA. Consider having it checked.
  15. I have done the ugly cry (as silently as possible) every time I saw the musical. I already told dh that he is watching the littles on opening night of the movie so I can take dd11! I love that they introduce it to kids as young as first grade in France. I think the message of grace and redemption is so so beautiful. I can also think of a few public figures I would like to send a copy of it to...
  16. My dd11 loves to read. She first read P&P at age 9? I think--of course a lot of it went over her head. Actually it was what prompted me to finally bite the bullet and finish off the birds and the bees talk because IMO the plot doesn't really make sense without understanding why Lydia going off with Wickham was so scandalous. She loves the other books now too, and we have watched many of the movies. We love the movie version of Sense and Sensibility, Emma, and are now in the middle of the BBC Pride and Prejudice. It has been so much fun! Tonight my dad said to her, "You have no sense of humor." Dd said, "yes I do--I think Jane Austen is funny!" Lol! She really cracks up at Mr. Collins. Sooo...I think it depends on the kid. I didn't read it until college but would have enjoyed it much earlier.
  17. :iagree: especially with the spirit killing part.
  18. Please see book Dual Diagnosis and Mis-diagnosis of the gifted child by James Webb. An evaluate by a professional is a good idea but I would make sure they had experience. With gifted kids. Excuse typos.
  19. The book Transforming the Difficult Child has some awesome advice on dealing with the behavior.
  20. I would also encourage you to check out the articles at SENG that I posted above. Sometimes we can have a skewed perception of "normal". From what I have seen and experienced intensity generally seems to be strongly correlated with giftedness.
  21. Check out the articles library at SENG and see if any of it sounds like your kid. http://www.sengifted.org/resources/resource-library/articles-library
