  1. I'm curious... ...those of you who purchase King Arthur flour, how much does it generally cost in your area? I've just come home from Whole Foods after not shopping there for a few months and I was a bit flabbergasted to find a 5lb bag of regular KA all-purpose flour costs $6.99 and organic costs $8.99  I usually pay around $4.60ish at a local grocery store here in NC. I might just have to find a new brand of flour but I do so love how my baking turns out with KA brand.
  2. How awesome for you all! Scotland is one of my favourite places in the whole world. I'm tartan with envy. :) Alba gu brath!
  3. Are you looking for a free site or pay-per-view online? We've used Setanta sports to watch the rugby world cup online. It's a pay-site where you can purchase either a years general subscription or package to a particular sporting event. http://www.setantanorthamerica.com/ HTH
  4. My mother's father worked with landmines and other explosives during WWII. He taught others how to detect them, how some of them were put together, and he also put on pyrotechnic displays for leading officers. He was all geared up to head out D-day morning when he was told to drop it all and return immediately to Salisbury where he was based. Some top-nobs who were visiting had wanted him to put on a display for them. That order might well have saved his life. Later that very same morning his first child, my mother, was born. We celebrated her 64th birthday yesterday and talked a lot about her dad :)
  5. Err, too much? I have no idea how much it works out to each month but I always try to keep multiple types of cheese in ready supply. I mostly buy the large bags of shredded/big blocks from Costco. At the moment I have... Shredded mozzarella, shredded mexican blend, large block of Pepper Jack, large block of aged English Cheddar, feta, goat cheese, cottage cheese, block of Parmesan, and just one small block of cream cheese. Wow, that's a LOT of cheese! Now I want some :)
  6. I love reading what others have named their pets. Very creative! :) Current pet names... Dog: Hagrid (because he's large and hairy) aka Haggis because he looks like Highland cow. Kittens: Aine (pronounced AHN-ya) and Aoife (pronounced EE-fa). Gaelic names that mean "Joyous". Previous pet names... Cat who died earlier this year :crying: my precious maine coon mix, Nanshe. Love-love-loved her. Dogs: Astro, Madison, Shelby. Youngest ds's fish: Algernon (algae-eater), Topsy (liked to swim at the top of the tank), Hyd'n (liked to hide) and Fantasy (?)
  7. Happy (almost) anniversary! It's mine and Dh's 20th on Tuesday and we had hoped to return visit a waterfall in the NC mountains we first visited 20 years ago. Unfortunately with my mother visiting, stuff going on with our children, appointments, new kittens, life! :) it's not going to happen at this time. Usually we visit the chapel in the park where we got married. We take a picnic and hang out there an hour or three. Sometimes the kids come along, sometimes just us two. It's a simple and cheap way to spent the day but helps us reconnect and reminisce.
  8. We've seen them in stock at our local Costco over the past month. HTH
  9. I'm not doing as well as I'd hoped. :( My Mum is here for an extended visit (3 months) and I've spent most of that time chatting or hanging out with her, leaving very little time for reading. I've read 23 books from my list so far, and a few others that weren't on my list. I hope to get back on track over the summer weeks. I have enjoyed the list as my 'go to' for guided reading choices rather than the total randomness of previous years.
  10. There was a similiar question here recently and I responded by saying I have previously purchased Frontline plus from Smartpak.com, it's cheaper than DrsFoster and Smith. A few days ago I was searching pet items on Amazon and noticed their prices were quite a bit cheaper than smartpak, and offer free shipping. HTH
  11. Prayers for you both for a quick and safe surgery and recovery. My dd(17) has a broken foot at the moment. It was a clean break, little pain or swelling and no surgery needed but she's added a few more grey hairs to my head I can tell you!
  12. A picture of dd's x-ray showing the break on the 5th metatarsal. I think feet just look weirdly elongated in x-rays! A picture of dd resting her foot after visiting the orthopedic Dr. this afternoon. Followup: The orthopedic Dr. gave dd the choice of a boot or a cast. As she attends a local high school for afternoon classes, she chose the hard cast as it offered her foot more protection from bumps and bangs while getting around campus. We'll have her dancing again soon enough. I know this won't keep her down for long ;)
  13. Thanks for the info, everyone. I'd never even thought of the aircast type boots, those look sturdy. She's had it in one of the stylish velcro type boots over the weekend to keep it stable and allow for swelling. She broke the 5th metatarsal clean through, right about in the middle of the bone. Apparently it's a typical dancer break and that's my dd, a dancer at heart. She was dancing around the house on Saturday afternoon in anticipation of going to her graduation prom later that evening. :( We're just headed out the door to the orthopedic office right now so I'd best get moving. Thanks again :)
  14. Does anyone know if it's common practice to hard cast for a broken foot? My dd(17) broke her foot this weekend and I'm hoping it will be hard cast for protection but her appt. isn't until later today. Just wondering what to expect.
  15. My ds does this every time we travel, which is very infrequent. It's really frightening, especially when staying in an 8th floor room with a balcony. We also block the exits with a piece of furniture, preferably after ds has fallen asleep so he doesn't know it's there beforehand. At home his sleepwalking episodes are rarer but when they do occur he tries to either open the front door, or wanders through the house turning all the lights on.
  16. I've ordered from "SmartPak" a few times. Also from Drs Foster and Smith, though they tend to be a few dollars higher than the site I've linked below. HTH http://www.smartpakcanine.com/SearchResults.aspx?page=GRID&free_text|1209318539203=frontline&attribute_value_string|Store_ID=Canine
  17. I luuuuuv the Tzatziki sauce found in the fridge section. It's great as a dip, or in a homemade gyro... or by the spoonful ;) I also like the pocketless pita's used as a pizza base. They freeze well and are great with whatever muddle of toppings we have on hand.
  18. I'm currently reading Ivanhoe and I have been surprised how fun a read it is. I had expected a more tedious sentence structure or long and dull descriptive passages. Certainly some reviews online describe it as such. I'm not finding it to be that way at all.
  19. We moved the majority of our household items to the UK 14 years ago and it cost around $7,000. We did not have a huge amount of furniture or other possessions at the time, and obviously, due to the differences in electrical current, we took no appliances with us. We moved everything back stateside 8 months later and it was slightly cheaper because all our 'stuff' was still packed and crated. Yeah, a big and expensive change of heart on *MY* part there  HTH
  20. I'm not sure about wintergreen or menthol but I just asked my mother who is currently visiting, and from what she said I did a quick google to confirm that mint polo's might be a good replacement for lifesavers. I've linked the site for you, the info is at the bottom of the page. http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A3073655 HTH
  21. A friend of mine has an older dog exhibiting similar symptoms though without the deafness and blindness factor. She's been told there isn't much to be done long term but for now the dog takes 'doggie' prozac and it's helped considerably in calming the barking, etc. My beloved cat died last weekend. I know just how tough a call this can be for the family.
  22. Yep, that's the same as I remember. The word lunch was not really used much at all. Of course, now I'm in NC, the words dinner and lunch are interchangeable and supper refers to the evening meal. Too confusing! :D Which part of England are you from?
  23. I use up overripe bananas by baking them into brownies. I use less sugar and less butter/oil (whichever your recipe calls for), and add about 1 to 1.5 cups of mashed banana. My kids love 'em!
