  1. I ordered logic liftoff for my daughter (11.5/6th grade) and I think it's way too challenging. I looked at the samples of logic countdown and it seems way too simple. Is there anything sort of between these levels?
  2. I'd look into eltl and math mammoth. Math mammoth is written to the student. She has free placement tests online. Eltl is only 3 days a week and includes grammar, writing, literature and even spelling if needed/wanted. I would start in level 3. Most people run it a level behind grade level. As for the other subjects, what do you need to document for your state? As long as you can meet their requirements I think outsourcing or rabbit trailing other subjects is fine.
  3. You have good info so far, but I wanted to add something. Anorexia = medical diagnosis, anorexia nervosa = mental health diagnosis. They are different things.
  4. If any of you have kids or personal experiences with middle schoolers that either chose for themselves or ended up coming home, please help me by sharing. I'd especially like to hear students own words. I gave dd the option to stay home or go to the local middle school this year for sixth. She went to the open house and after a few days decided she wanted to stay home. She mostly wants to go to feel "normal." Most of her friends go to school. Her best friend is a year behind her and will go to middle school next year, so she thinks she wants to go for 7th grade because they will be in the same school. I will stress the fact that the will not see each other in school due to being in separate grades. We lead a very busy life. I am in school (2 years left for BSN). DH is in school and works a very unpredictable restaurant schedule. A large part I her wanting to stay home is because she will hardly see DH. He almost always works both weekend days, and when he closes she wouldn't see him at all. We take advantage of midweek off season trips, she works as a mothers helper during the week sometimes. She is super sensitive and would fee very left out of family time not being home. Selfishly I don't want to give up this flexible lifestyle and our family time. My own personal middle school experience (at the school she will go to) is horrid. I was bullied, assaulted, battered and eventually became so depressed I was suicidal. We have reports from current students that there is a lot of sexual pressure, drug pressure, smoking and drinking happening. A friend entered middle school at 8th grade and also reported it as awful because all of the social groups had already been formed and it was very hard to adapt. She never ended up belonging and became so discouraged she didn't even try in high school. I haven't heard from anyone that entered in 7th. I am fine with her going to high school. I want her to make it through the first hormonal years of puberty finding her place, her interests and herself without the peer pressure to conform. If you've made it this far, thank you. I have "convince" in quotes because obviously I can force her, but it is always better to get them to "buy in" on their own.
  5. In level 4 we spend about 40 mins a week, but are using it as remediation for my 6th grader.
  6. I take off the lid and put press n seal cling wrap over the top. Return lid and put another few layers around it. Put in ziploc bag.
  7. Is it scored? Tablet or capsule? Coated? I think colace has 51a on one side.
  8. I think there is nothing wrong with what you are doing. This is first grade! Don't over complicate. Make a plan to add in your language arts, science and history. Ride out the enthusiasm as long as you can. Don't make her stop so you can plan. I have to do all of my planning and prep over the summer since I am in school full time, work part time and do a lot of volunteering. My husband works FT and goes to school part time. I understand feeing like you have to plan it all right now, but honestly at this age it can change so much. Make a loose plan and supplies list and start small.
  9. I would say do the Rn and then the 1 year bridge unless you don't have the prereqs to the program or your sciences have expired (5-10 years or never for some programs). The 4 year BSN often involves the lower level prereqs and you may find yourself out of place academically.
  10. There is a push to have 80% of nurses have a BSN or higher by 2020. In order to have magnet status, most hospitals are requiring you to get it within 2-5 years.
  11. I'd highly recommend uber for rides instead of cabs or light rail. Cabs tend to be more expensive and harder to come by. Also less clean and friendly. Light rail is shady.
  12. A collage is a good idea. Maybe of their art.. Hmm
  13. Kids (11,9,6) have all asked to do more art this year. I'm making a list of projects instead of using a curriculum and seeing how it goes. They also want more science, so if the two go together that's a bonus. So far I have: Paper plate sun catchers/ flower mosaics Salt dough mosaic Build anemometer Colorful milk Glue sun catchers Crisscrossing paint tape over a canvas then paint Origami Button bowl Snow globe Tooth pick painting Dream catchers They love painting and working with clay.
  14. I wouldn't hesitate at all to go down town. Especially the inner harbor. Our science center is awesome! The zoo is also a quick drive from downtown. Fort McHenry is pretty cool, too.
  15. Shrug it off. To me it's like an 8 year old saying she's in 8th grade. Do you keep a sampling of her work at all? If not, maybe it would make you feel better to do so. You'd have "proof" if anyone ever came knocking.
  16. Second guess yourself, continue to browse and wait for things to change?
  17. I use google calendars. Everyone has their own color.
