  1. I too am anxiously awaiting some good news about their baby girl. Hopefully it will be coming soon. But I don't think there is anything to say when a baby is in that situation. Baby #3 and #4 were in the NICU for while and it was exactly like others have said. To say it is 2 steps forward and 1 step back doesn't come close to explaining it. There would be no point in giving an update because everything can change so fast. I was looking for info right away but now I keep figuring that when they have something to say it will be so talked about that I couldn't possibly miss it.:) Do you think these families know what they are getting into? I can't imagine going from "normal" to SO controversial and well known.
  2. :D It happens! Now if I'm completely wrong on my last post - I give up!
  3. I think what Heather meant (if I may ;)) is honors - not AP. I'm pretty sure this info is in the loom that you get when you buy the year plan. It might be elsewhere but that is where I've seen it.
  4. I think it was in a newsletter. I remember this too. However I too am severely sleep deprived and could also be dreaming.:D If I remember right this was going to an option in the future. I didn't pay much attention but I though they were talking DE with a resale option.
  5. I think it can be whatever you want it be. I would say the authors are conservative Christian but it doesn't necessarily lay out only one way of thinking.
  6. I too am planning for next year. I will have 2nd grader and K'er. I love seeing all the great ideas everyone has. We will be studying medieval times next year history. My 2nd grader is a girl but K'er is a boy so knights and such should be good fun.
  7. Thank you so much! I didn't even know books like this existed :D.
  8. I hope this isn't TOO silly a question but I'm new here so here I go. I have heard the term "living math" books on this forum and am confused. What are they? Are they a supplement to a math curriculum? Is there a list somewhere of suggestions? Why do you use them? Thanks
  9. I think MUS would be good fit for your kids. I have EB and am not overly impressed. When you move onto Alpha maybe think about supplementing or switching to Singapore 1A/1B if any or all of your kids need more of a challenge. I happen to like SM better but from what I hear MUS works for almost any type of learner so it might be a good place to start.
  10. A lifesaver for me is to have a completely childproof room. Baby naps at 8 am so 2 yo and 4 yo go into room to play together for 30-40 min. They can choose legos, play food, etc. This time is for working 1 on 1 with dd. We do math and phonics or copywork. Then she goes into room to play or read with 2 yo while I work on reading with 4 yo. We are all together after that for read alouds. Then I play with little ones while dd works independently. If more time is needed I put 2 yo and 4 yo at table with puzzles or colors. Your situation sounds a little different but this is how it looks for me. Maybe your olders could take turns "baby-sitting" to give you a little 1 on 1 time with the other and try to do the rest with both during naptime / quiet time.
  11. This just came up on the TOG forum and they plan to get started on revising year 1 as soon as they finish year 4. So maybe end of 2010.
  12. Are you looking for something like this? http://www.classical-homeschooling.org/v2/index.php?page=495
  13. If you have Excel you might want to look at Donna Young's website. http://www.donnayoung.org/forms/planners/exgrade_attend.htm I have played around with this a little and I think it will work well for me. I am not going to keep grades until next year so I don't know how it will actually work .
  14. I am using TOG and love it. However, my kids are young and I have never used Sonlight so I hope someone else can be more helpful. I think the best thing to do is to download one of the 3 week samples. I think there are two to choose from - or get both. You can get an idea of the reading assignments to compare to what you are doing. Skim through the Teacher Notes until you get to the discussions for an idea what those look like.
  15. IMO there is no purpose for young people. My kids are 6 and under but I've been thinking about this a lot lately and I love this thread. The message to kids seems to be "don't worry about the next stage of life - just be a kid." This message is being repeated until they are 25! Add the media influence on top of that and it is no wonder education seems so far down the list of priorities. Now, what to do about it? I wish I knew.
  16. Thanks for the feedback. It's hard to not be tempted and overwhelmed by all the options. Right now inexpensive is very important and if it ain't broke....
  17. My kids take a gummy bear Vit D (cod liver oil not happening) and we all take a Multi. I want to get an Omega - 3 but I can't find a way I think my kids will take it that I can afford.
  18. I am using CGE 1 with 6 yo dd. I like it, she likes it, it is dirt cheap so I wonder if I'm missing something. Does anyone else use it? I plan on using CGE 2 next year. I am going to add spelling and Serl's PLL for Language Arts. Is this enough? Is CGE lacking (other than being extremely plain)?
  19. I did need HIG to teach 1A . I had to go back and buy it after looking at the textbook. I knew what they were doing but had no idea how to present it to dd. I bought IP but it was too much for her. I think we might go through them in the summer for review. Oh, and I'm on my way to shop for some base ten cubes - I think they will help dd.
  20. You can definitely use Singapore without being a math whiz especially through 6B. I was worried about this but others that used it encouraged me to just keep going as long as it works so that is what I'm going to do. After 6B I think the teacher guides are pretty weak and it may become a problem. I'm hoping that by the time I get there they will have come out with some better guides but I'll worry about that then. Ha ha, I KNOW!
  21. We use Singapore Math and like it. Whatever you choose have dc take placement test since it seems so many maths cover things differently. I too am trying to decide what to use for spelling when dd is 7 next year. I *think* I like the idea behind Spelling Power that you only work on words you don't know but I'm not sure
  22. I am another user of TOG with little ones - 6 and under. We love it but I think some people get overwhelmed. Rather than have that happen I think starting in 5th so you can make two complete cycles with oldest is wise.
